Rakul Preet Singh (born October 10, 1990) is an Indian actress who works primarily in Telugu, Hindi, and Tamil films. She has received several awards, including a SIIMA Award and a CineMAA Award, as well as four Filmfare Awards South nominations.

Singh made her acting debut in Kannada with the film Gilli (2009). In 2013, she made her debut in other South Indian industries with the Telugu film Venkatadri Express and the Tamil film Thadaiyara Thaakka. She then appeared in films such as Loukyam (2014), Pandaga Chesko (2015), Sarrainodu (2016), Dhruva (2016), Nannaku Prematho (2016), Rarandoi Veduka Chudham (2017), Spyder (2017), and Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru (2017). (2017). She has since shifted her focus primarily to Hindi films.

Singh made his debut in Hindi cinema with the sleeper hit comedy film Yaariyan (2014). She returned to Hindi films after a brief hiatus with the commercially successful romantic comedy De De Pyaar De (2019). She has since appeared in a number of Hindi films, including Runway 34 (2022), Doctor G (2022), and Chhatriwali, for which she has received critical acclaim (2023).

Early years

Rakul Preet Singh was born on October 10, 1990, in New Delhi to a Sikh family. Rakul attended Army Public School in Dhaula Kuan and later earned a degree in mathematics from Jesus and Mary College. Her father was a military officer. Her mother's name is Rajender Kaur, and her father's name is Kulwinder Singh. Aman Preet Singh, her younger brother, is set to make his Bollywood debut with the film Ram Rajya.

Singh currently resides in Hyderabad and owns a home in Mumbai as of 2020.

Career Beginnings and Early Roles (2009–2014)

Singh was born in the year 2014.

Singh, who stated that she had always wanted to be an actress, began her modelling career at the age of 18 while still in college. In 2009, she made her Kannada film debut in Gilli, a remake of Selvaraghavan's 7G Rainbow Colony. She stated that she signed up the film "with the aim to earn a little extra pocket money" and that she was unaware "how big south Indian films were". She received positive reviews for her performance in the film before returning to finish her degree and compete in the 2011 Femina Miss India pageant. She won four subtitles at the pageant, including Pantaloons Femina Miss Fresh Face, Femina Miss Talented, Femina Miss Beautiful Smile, and Femina Miss Beautiful Eyes, in addition to People's Choice Miss Indiatimes.

She returned to films in 2011, featuring opposite Siddharth Rajkumar in Keratam which was released both in Telugu and Tamil languages, though critics noted that "she got very little screen time". The film was also made in Tamil as "Yuvan," with the same cast but a different director. She had a supporting role in the Tamil film Thadaiyara Thaakka in 2012.

In January 2013, she starred in the Tamil film Puthagam. In November 2013, she appeared in the Telugu film Venkatadri Express, which was a commercial success and earned her first Best Actress nomination at the 61st Filmfare Awards South.

In 2014, she made her Hindi debut as a leading lady in Divya Kumar's directorial debut Yaariyan, followed by her third Tamil film Yennamo Yedho. By the middle of 2014, she was working on three Telugu films at the same time, directed by Sriwass, G. Nageswara Reddy, and Gopichand Malineni. Her next releases were Sriwass' Loukyam and G. Nageswara Reddy's Current Theega. She received positive reviews for her performances in both films, with 123Telugu claiming that she was "slowly becoming a star actress". She was nominated for Best Actress for the second time at the 62nd Filmfare Awards South. Pandaga Chesko, directed by Gopichand Malineni and starring Ram Pothineni, was her next film to be released.

Breakthrough in Telugu filmmaking and beyond (2015-2018)

Singh was then cast as the female lead in four Telugu films: Surender Reddy's Kick 2 opposite Ravi Teja, Srinu Vaitla's Bruce Lee opposite Ram Charan, Sukumar's Nannaku Prematho opposite Jr. Ntr, and Boyapati Srinu's Sarrainodu opposite Allu Arjun. At the 6th South Indian International Movie Awards, she won her first Best Actress (Telugu) award. In January 2016, she signed on for the film Jaya Janaki Nayaka, directed by Boyapati Srinu and starring opposite Bellamkonda Sreenivas. She signed Surender Reddy's Dhruva in February 2016, reuniting with Ram Charan for the second time.

In early March 2016, she signed on to play Sai Dharam Tej in Gopichand Malineni's film Winner for the first time. In early July 2016, she signed on to star in AR Murugadoss' bilingual film Spyder alongside Mahesh Babu. In September 2016, she signed on for another Telugu film, Rarandoi Veduka Chudham, directed by Kalyan Krishna and starring Naga Chaitanya. The film was a huge blockbuster when it was released on May 26th.

In December 2016, she signed a deal for her next film, Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru, in which she will star alongside Karthi. After a brief hiatus from Hindi films, she returned in February with Neeraj Pandey's Aiyaary, in which she co-starred with Sidharth Malhotra.

Career changes and transitions to other film industries (2019–present)

In 2019, she appeared as Sridevi in Nandamuri Balakrishna's NTR: Kathanayakudu. She went on to play the female lead opposite Karthi in Dev for the second time. Singh starred alongside Ajay Devgn and Tabu in Luv Ranjan's Bollywood romcom De De Pyaar De, which was released on May 17, 2019. In the same month, she co-starred with Suriya in Selvaraghavan's NGK. Her fifth 2019 release was Manmadhudu 2, a Telugu romantic comedy film directed by Rahul Ravindran and produced by Nagarjuna Akkineni. In the same year, she co-starred with Ritesh Deshmukh, Sidharth Malhotra, and Tara Sutaria in Milap Milan Zaveri's action drama Marjaavaan.

Singh appeared in Check, directed by Chandra Sekhar Yeleti, alongside Nithiin in 2021, and Sardar Ka Grandson, opposite Arjun Kapoor. On October 8, her Telugu film Konda Polam, directed by Krish and starring Panja Vaissnav Tej, was released. The Times of India's Neeshita Nyayapati wrote about Singh in her film review "Rakul is a delight as Obu, and her dubbing seems almost pitch-perfect, fitting right into the character's skin. She's a bright spot in an otherwise gloomy film ".

Her first release in 2022 was the action film Attack, co-starring John Abraham and Jacqueline Fernandez and directed by Lakshya Raj Anand. It was met with mixed reactions. Then came the release of Runway 34, in which she co-starred with Ajay Devgn and Amitabh Bachchan. Both films were commercial flops.

Projects in the works

Singh has seven films in various stages of development. She has signed on for two Tamil films: S. Shankar's vigilante action film Indian 2 and Ayalaan, a science fiction film starring Sivakarthikeyan. She has four Hindi films in the works. She will also appear in Indra Kumar's slice-of-life comedy Thank God, alongside Devgn and Sidharth Malhotra, as well as Anubhuti Kashyap's Doctor G, opposite Ayushmann Khurrana. She will play the lead in Tejas Prabha Vijay Deoskar's social family entertainer film Chhatriwali (2023 Film). Rakul will co-star in Mission Cinderella with Akshay Kumar. She also has a bilingual film titled 31 October Ladies Night in Tamil and Telugu.

The Telangana government appointed Singh as the brand ambassador for the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao programme in 2017. She owns and operates three F45 Training functional training gyms. Two of them are in Hyderabad, in the Gachibowli and Kokapet suburbs, and the other is in Visakhapatnam.
