Department has already asked for proposal from the senior forest officer of the area. This proposal is likely to be brought up in the next cabinet meeting.
In August, 2019, the state cabinet had approved the proposal for establishment of Lemru Elephant Reserve with the total area of 1995.48 square kilometres. Due to some technical glitch, the public notification of the decision could not be made. Further, in the light of promoting wildlife diversity, the area for the reserve was further expanded to 3,827 sq kilometres. This Elephant Reserve was about to cover most of the area of Jashpur, Balrampur, Surajpur and Korba districts.
According to the Forest Department, State Health Minister TS SinghDeo, and few other MLAs from different districts are appealing for diminishing the area of the reserve by 80 percent. Local gram panchayats have also requested to reduce the area of reserve, which they fear is likely to affect the livelihood and might restrict the public movement.
Therefore the Forest Department has decided to bring proposal for cutting short the area of Elephant Reserve in the next cabinet meeting soon.
According to Aalok Shukla, one of the member of Chattisgarh Bachao Andolan, Congress government in the state is probably backing off from its decision due to intense pressure from big mining corporations. The Congress who pledged to protect the constitutional rights of the tribal community in the region , before coming into power, is now depriving them of their Rights.
