Priyanka Chopra Jonas (born 18 July 1982) is an Indian film and television actress and producer. Chopra, the Miss World 2000 winner, is one of India's highest-paid actresses and has won multiple awards, including two National Film Awards and five Filmfare Awards. In 2016, the Indian government awarded her the Padma Shri, and Time named her one of the world's 100 most influential people. Within the next two years, Forbes named her one of the World's 100 Most Powerful Women, and she was named to the BBC 100 Women list in 2022.
Following her pageant victories, Chopra received offers to work in the Indian film industry. Her feature film début was in the Tamil film Thamizhan (2002), followed by The Hero: Love Story of a Spy (2003). She starred as the lead in the box office smashes Andaaz (2003) and Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004), and she made her debut in the 2004 romantic thriller Aitraaz. Chopra was born on July 18, 1982, in Jamshedpur, Bihar (now Jharkhand), to Ashok and Madhu Chopra, both Indian Army medics. Her father was an Ambala-born Punjabi Hindu. Madhu Chopra is the eldest daughter of Dr Manohar Kishan Akhouri, a former Congress veteran, and Madhu Jyotsna Akhouri, a former Bihar Legislative Assembly member.
Mrs. Akhouri, Chopra's maternal grandmother, was a Malayali Jacobite Syrian Christian initially named Mary John, from the Kavalappara family of Kumarakom, Kottayam district, Kerala. Siddharth Chopra, Chopra's younger brother, is seven years her junior. Parineeti Chopra, Meera Chopra, and Mannara Chopra are cousins in Bollywood.
Chopra's parents were military physicians, therefore the family was stationed in a variety of locations throughout India, including Delhi, Chandigarh, Ambala, Ladakh, Lucknow, Bareilly, and Pune. La Martiniere Girls' School in Lucknow and St. Maria Goretti College in Bareilly were among the schools she attended.

Chopra travelled to the United States to study when she was 13 years old, living with her aunt and attending schools in Newton, Massachusetts, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, following a brief sojourn in Queens, New York, because her aunt's family moved frequently. She took part in various theatre shows and studied Western classical music and choir singing while in Massachusetts. Chopra encountered racial challenges as a teenager in the United States, and was ridiculed for being Indian by an African-American classmate. "I was a gawky kid, had low self-esteem, came from a modest middle-class background, and had white marks on my legs," she has claimed. But I worked extremely hard. During this time, Chopra won the local May Queen beauty competition, after which she was chased by admirers; her family installed bars in their home to protect her. Career as an actor
Beginnings and breakthroughs in my career (2002-2004)
Chopra was cast as the female protagonist in Abbas-Mustan's romantic thriller Humraaz (2002), her film debut, after winning Miss India World. However, this fell through for a variety of reasons, including Chopra's claim that the production conflicted with her schedule, and the producers' claim that they recast because Chopra took on numerous other commitments. Her film debut was in the 2002 Tamil film Thamizhan as the love interest of the protagonist, Vijay. A review published in The Hindu praised the film for its wit and dialogue, but believed that Chopra's role was limited in terms of acting.
Chopra made her Bollywood film debut in 2003 as the second female protagonist in Anil Sharma's The Hero: Love Story of a Spy, starring Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta. The film portrays the narrative of a RAW agent fighting terrorists against the backdrop of the Indian Army in Kashmir. The Hero was one of the year's highest-grossing Bollywood films, however it earned mixed reviews from critics. According to Variety's Derek Elley, "mega-looker Chopra makes a solid screen debut." Later same year, she co-starred with Akshay Kumar in Raj Kanwar's box-office smash Andaaz, sharing the female lead with debutante Lara Dutta. Chopra portrayed a lively young lady who falls in love with Kumar's character. The Hindustan Times lauded her for bringing beauty to the role, and Kunal Shah of Sify said she had "all the qualities to be a star." Chopra's first three films of 2004, Plan, Kismat, and Asambhav, underperformed at the box office. During this time, Chopra was frequently cast as a "glamour quotient" in roles that film critic Joginder Tuteja dismissed as forgettable. Ascendance to prominence (2005-2006)
Chopra starred in six films in 2005. Her first two films, the action thrillers Blackmail and Karam, were both critical and commercial failures. Shilpa Bharatan-Iyer of Rediff.com thought Blackmail was a highly predictable picture and that her part as a police commissioner's wife was quite limited in terms of performance. Subhash K. Jha commented of Chopra's performance in Karam, "with her poised interpretation of high drama, flies high creating a character whose vulnerability and beauty are endorsed by both the inner and outer worlds created for her character." Later same year, Chopra played Akshay Kumar's wife in Vipul Amrutlal Shah's family drama Waqt: The Race Against Time, about a tiny businessman (Amitabh Bachchan) who, while disguising his sickness, seeks to teach his reckless son some lessons before he dies. Chopra returned to Leh, a favourite childhood destination, for the filming of the song "Subah Hogi" during production. She electrocuted herself while filming the song "Do Me A Favour Let's Play Holi" and spent a day in the hospital recovering. The film earned positive reviews from reviewers and was a commercial success.
She then starred as a possessive lover opposite Arjun Rampal in the romantic mystery film Yakeen. The film received mixed reviews from critics, although her acting was praised. According to Taran Adarsh, Chopra "is bound to win laurels once more; the actor is emerging as one of the finest talents in these fast-changing times." Suneel Darshan's romance Barsaat, co-starring Bobby Deol and Bipasha Basu, was her next release. In India, the film was a critical and commercial flop, but it fared better in the international market. Chopra's performance was described as "mechanical" by Bollywood Hungama. Chopra, on the other hand, was described as the "epitome of calm intelligence, who underplayed her role to perfection" by Rediff.com. Later same year, Rohan Sippy cast her in the comedy Bluffmaster! starring Abhishek Bachchan, Ritesh Deshmukh, and Nana Patekar. Simran Saxena, Bachchan's love interest, was played by Chopra as an independent working lady. The movie was a box office hit.
Following appearances in three films in 2006, Chopra participated in Rakesh Roshan's superhero picture Krrish (a sequel to the 2003 science-fiction film Koi... Mil Gaya). Chopra co-starred in the film with Hrithik Roshan, Rekha, and Naseeruddin Shah as a young television journalist who plots to take advantage of an innocent young guy with extraordinary athletic ability, but eventually falls in love with him. The film was the second-highest-grossing film of the year in India, collecting more than 1.17 billion rupees (US$15 million) globally, earning it blockbuster status. Aap Ki Khatir, a love comedy directed by Dharmesh Darshan, starred Akshaye Khanna, Ameesha Patel, and Dino Morea. Neither the film nor Chopra's performance earned positive reviews. According to Rediff.com's Sukanya Verma, Chopra's portrayal of Anu was "erratically sketched," and her character was never consistent: "first flaky, then cool, and later, sensitive."
Farhan Akhtar's action-thriller Don (a remake of the 1978 film of the same name), starring Shah Rukh Khan, was Chopra's final release of 2006. Chopra portrays Roma (originally played by Zeenat Aman), who joins the underworld to avenge Don's murder of her brother. Chopra got martial-arts instruction and performed her own stunts for her role in the film. The film was a box-office hit in India and elsewhere, grossing $1.05 billion (US$13 million). Raja Sen of Rediff.com said Chopra was the film's "big surprise"; he thought Chopra convincingly portrayed Roma, "looking every bit the competent woman of action" and added, "This is an actress willing to push herself, and has definite potential for screen magic." Setbacks and revival (2007-2008)
Chopra has two main roles in 2007. Salaam-e-Ishq: A Tribute to Love, a romantic comedy-drama in six chapters with an ensemble cast, was her first film. In the first chapter, she appeared alongside Salman Khan as Kamini, an item girl and aspiring actress who uses a PR stunt to earn the lead role in a Karan Johar film. Sukanya Verma, a film critic, commended her sense of humour, particularly her interpretations of Meena Kumari, Nargis, and Madhubala. Both Salaam-e-Ishq: A Tribute to Love and her subsequent picture, Big Brother, bombed at the domestic box office.
Chopra appeared in his father's Love Story 2050 in 2008, with Harman Baweja. Chopra played two characters, so she dyed her hair twice: red for the girl from the future and black for the girl from the past. Rajeev Masand was underwhelmed with Chopra's chemistry with her co-star, stating that her character "fails to inspire either affection or sympathy." She then starred as a TV anchor in the comedy God Tussi Great Ho, alongside Salman Khan, Sohail Khan, and Amitabh Bachchan. Chopra then played a kindergarten teacher in Chamku, alongside Bobby Deol and Irrfan Khan, and Sonia in Goldie Behl's fantasy superhero film Drona, alongside Abhishek Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan. Chopra's run of underwhelming films came to an end when she starred in Madhur Bhandarkar's Fashion, a drama about the Indian fashion business that tracked the lives and careers of various fashion models. She played the ambitious supermodel Meghna Mathur, a part she initially thought was above her capabilities, but after six months of deliberation, she accepted the role, encouraged by Bhandarkar's faith in her. Chopra had to acquire 6 kilogrammes (13 lb) for the role and then gradually lose the weight as the character progressed in the film. Both the film and her performance gained critical acclaim, and it proved to be a watershed moment in her career. Dostana, a romantic comedy directed by Tarun Mansukhani and starring Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham, was Chopra's final film of the year. The film is set in Miami and chronicles the narrative of her character's connection with two men who pretend to be gay in order to share an apartment with her. Chopra portrayed Neha Melwani, a fashionable young fashion magazine editor who is dealing with professional difficulties in her life. The picture, produced by Dharma Productions, was a commercial success, grossing over $860 million (US$11 million) worldwide. Chopra's performance and appearance in the film were both acclaimed. She shared the Stardust Award for Actor of the Year - Female for her performances in Fashion and Dostana.
Experiment with unusual roles (2009-2011).
In 2009, Chopra played Sweety, a fiery Marathi woman, in Vishal Bhardwaj's caper thriller Kaminey (co-starring Shahid Kapoor), about twin brothers and their journey through life, which is tied to the underworld. The film gained critical acclaim and became a box-office triumph, grossing $710 million (US$9 million) worldwide. Chopra's role completely reinvented her, according to Nikhat Kazmi of The Times of India, and Rajeev Masand wrote: "Springing a delightful surprise in a smaller part is [Chopra], who sprinkles her lines with a smattering of fluent Marathi and emerges as one of the film's most lovable characters." Her performance garnered her a second consecutive Producers Guild Film Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role after Fashion, as well as nominations for Best Actress at the Filmfare, Screen, and IIFA awards.
Following that, Chopra acted in Ashutosh Gowariker's romantic comedy What's Your Raashee?, based on Madhu Rye's novel Kimball Ravenswood. The film tells the narrative of a Gujrati NRI living in the United States who is looking for his soulmate among 12 girls (all played by Chopra) who represent the 12 zodiac signs. For her performance in the film, she was nominated for a Screen Award for Best Actress. She was considered for inclusion in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the first cinema actress to play 12 different characters in a single film. Chopra's intense workload—filming for many productions, travelling for sponsorships, and performing at live shows (including the Miss India pageant)—took its toll; she fainted while filming and was taken to the hospital. Chopra co-starred with Uday Chopra in Jugal Hansraj's romantic comedy Pyaar Impossible! in 2010. as Alisha, a popular college girl (and afterwards a working mother) who falls for a socially incompetent man. Later that year, she co-starred in Siddharth Anand's romantic comedy-drama Anjaana Anjaani alongside Ranbir Kapoor. The film is set in New York and Las Vegas and tells the story of two suicidal strangers who fall in love with each other. The film earned mixed-to-positive reviews from critics and was a box office success.
In her debut film of 2011, Vishal Bhardwaj's black comedy 7 Khoon Maaf, she played a femme fatale. Based on Ruskin Bond's short novel Susanna's Seven Husbands, 7 Khoon Maaf follows Chopra's Susanna Anna-Marie Johannes, an Anglo-Indian woman who murders her husbands in her never-ending hunt for love. Critics praised both the film and her performance. Nikhat Kazmi called the film "a watershed moment in Chopra's career," praising her "exquisite command over a complex character that is unquestionably a first in Indian cinema." According to Rachel Saltz of the New York Times, Susanna was more of a notion than a character, and Chopra, "though charming as always, can't make her cohere." Chopra won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress (Critics) and was nominated for the Filmfare Award, IIFA Award, Producers Guild Film Award, and Screen Award for Best Actress for her performance.
Chopra finished the year by reprising her role as Roma in Don 2, the second edition of the Don franchise. Although the film drew mixed reactions, critics praised Chopra's performance. According to The Express Tribune, "Chopra... seems to be the perfect choice for an action heroine. As you watch her effortlessly beat up some thugs in the movie, you come to the realisation that she may be the first proper female action hero in Bollywood."
Additional success (2012-2014)
Agneepath, directed by Karan Malhotra and starring Hrithik Roshan, Sanjay Dutt, and Rishi Kapoor, was Chopra's first film of 2012. The film is a remake of his father's 1990 production of the same name, produced by Karan Johar. Chopra's lehenga (traditional skirt) caught fire while filming a sequence for an extravagant Ganpati holiday song, one of several mishaps that occurred during production. She played Kaali Gawde, Roshan's chatty love interest in the film. Chopra stood out in a male-dominated film, according to Mayank Shekhar. Agneepath set Bollywood's highest opening-day profits record, grossing $1.93 billion (US$24 million) globally. Chopra next appeared alongside Shahid Kapoor in Kunal Kohli's romantic drama Teri Meri Kahaani. The film tells the experiences of three unrelated couples born in various eras (each played by Kapoor and Chopra).
Barfi by Anurag Basu!Her final appearance in 2012 was in alongside Ranbir Kapoor and Ileana D'Cruz. The film is set in the 1970s and chronicles the narrative of three persons, two of whom are physically challenged. Chopra portrayed Jhilmil Chatterjee, an autistic woman who falls for a deaf, mute man (Kapoor). Given how difficult it is for an actor to represent a woman with autism successfully, director Rituparno Ghosh thought it a "very, very brave" assignment to take. Chopra visited numerous mental facilities and spent time with autistic persons in order to prepare for the part. The film was a critical and economic success, grossing 1.75 billion (US$22 million) worldwide. Filmfare's Rachit Gupta called Chopra the film's "surprise package," calling her performance "the best representation of [autism] on Indian celluloid." The Telegraph's Pratim D. Gupta appreciated Kapoor and Chopra, albeit he thought she was a "tad showy" in her role. Chopra was nominated for Best Actress in the Filmfare, Screen, IIFA, and Producers Guild Film Awards. The film was chosen to represent India at the 85th Academy Awards. Barfi and Agneepath! Among the highest-grossing Bollywood films at the time.
In 2013, she voiced Ishaani, India's reigning Pan-Asian champion and the love interest of the main protagonist in the Disneytoon Studios film Planes, a spinoff of Pixar's Cars franchise. Chopra, a Disney lover, had a good time playing the character, saying, "The closest I could come to being a Disney princess, I think, was Ishaani." The picture was a commercial success, grossing over $240 million worldwide. She portrayed an NRI girl in Apoorva Lakhia's bilingual action drama Zanjeer (Thoofan in Telugu), a remake of the 1973 Hindi film of the same name, which received negative reviews and failed at the box office. Chopra then played Priya again in Rakesh Roshan's Krrish 3, a sequel to the 2006 superhero picture Krrish, alongside Hrithik Roshan, Vivek Oberoi, and Kangana Ranaut. Critics thought Chopra had little to do in the picture. According to NDTV's Saibal Chatterjee, she "is saddled with a sketchily written role and is reduced to the status of a hanger-on waiting for things to unfold." The film was a box-office blockbuster, grossing more than 3 billion (US$38 million) globally, becoming Chopra's largest commercial success to that moment and her fourth major hit in two years. Chopra co-starred with Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor, and Irrfan Khan in Yash Raj Films' romantic action movie Gunday, directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, in 2014. She played Nandita, a Calcutta cabaret performer. The film is set in the 1970s and chronicles the story of two closest friends who fall in love with Nandita. Gunday was a box-office triumph, collecting more than $1 billion (US$13 million) worldwide. Chopra then starred in Mary Kom, a biographical film about five-time world boxing champion and Olympic bronze medalist Mary Kom. She spent time with Kom and took four months of boxing instruction to prepare for the role. The film premiered at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival and earned good reviews from reviewers, as did her performance. The Hindu's Sudhish Kamath commended Chopra's "knockout" performance, adding, "The spirited actress rises above the material and makes us invest in her and does full justice to the spirit" of the fighter. According to the Indo-Asian News Service assessment, the actress "expressed every shade of the character with pitch-perfect bravado." Mary Kom was a commercial success, grossing $1.04 billion (US$13 million) at the movie office. She garnered nominations for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress, the Screen Award for Best Actress, and the Producers Guild Film Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
Expansion into the American film and television industries (2015-2019)
Chopra appeared in Zoya Akhtar's Dil Dhadakne Do in 2015, starring Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, Ranveer Singh, Anushka Sharma, and Farhan Akhtar. The plot follows the Mehras, a dysfunctional Punjabi family who invites their family and friends on a cruise to commemorate their parents' 30th wedding anniversary. She played Ayesha Mehra, the eldest kid and a wealthy entrepreneur. The Telegraph's Pratim D. Gupta said of Chopra, "From the propah body language to the measured speech shows the kind of depth she is able to bring to her lines and characters these days." The Indian Express' Shubhra Gupta said it was time for her "to being a little messy: all these not-a-hair-out-of-place roles are making her constrained."
Chopra signed a talent holding deal with ABC Studios and was later cast in the American thriller series Quantico as the character Alex Parrish. The series premiered in 2015 on ABC, making Chopra the first South Asian to headline an American network drama series. The series received positive reviews from television critics and Chopra was praised for her performance. Rob Lowman of the Los Angeles Daily News applauded her "dynamic screen presence" and James Poniewozik of The New York Times named Chopra as the "strongest human asset" of the show, and added that "she is immediately charismatic and commanding." She received the People's Choice Award for Favourite Actress In A New TV Series for her role in Quantico, becoming the first South Asian actress to win a People's Choice Award. The following year, Chopra won a second People's Choice Award for Favorite Dramatic TV Actress. Quantico was cancelled after three seasons in 2018. Chopra later said that her move to America was prompted by disagreements with people in Bollywood: "I had people not casting me, I had beef with people, I am not good at playing that game so I kind of was tired of the politics and I said I needed a break.”
In Sanjay Leela Bhansali's epic historical love movie Bajirao Mastani, Chopra played Kashibai, the first wife of Maratha general Peshwa Bajirao I. The film premiered to rave reviews, and Chopra gained significant acclaim for her performance, which numerous critics hailed as her best to date. Rajeev Masand wrote, "the film benefits from a nice touch of playfulness and humour in Priyanka Chopra's Kashibai. Chopra brings grace to the character, and practically steals the film." Film critic Raja Sen thought Chopra, despite not being in the title role, owned the film, writing, "Chopra's terrific in the part, her intelligently expressive eyes speaking volumes and her no-nonsense Marathi rhythm bang-on." She won the Filmfare Award, the IIFA Award, and the Screen Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance, and she was nominated for the Producers Guild Film Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
Chopra appeared as a police officer in Prakash Jha's 2016 social drama Jai Gangaajal. Namrata Joshi, writing for The Hindu, believed she "looks off-colour, disinterested, and uninvolved with the goings-on throughout most of the film." It didn't do well commercially. Chopra made her Hollywood live-action feature debut the following year, playing the antagonist Victoria Leeds in Seth Gordon's action comedy Baywatch, alongside Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron. The film garnered negative feedback. IGN named Chopra the film's highlight, noting that she "outshines pretty much anyone she's in a scene with" and wrote, "Chopra's engaging and interesting and is the only character that speaks with any kind of distinctive cadence." Forbes' Scott Mendelson wrote, "Chopra has fun as the baddie, but she stays in the background until the end of the movie and really only gets one big scene at the end of the picture." Chopra's next American film, A Kid Like Jake, a drama on gender variation starring Jim Parsons and Claire Danes, premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. Variety's Amy Nicholson praised her "charming presence" but said her role brought little to the film. She agreed to portray the main lady opposite Salman Khan in Bharat in early 2019, but she backed out only days before filming began. Nikhil Namit, the film's producer, stated that she left owing to her engagement to Nick Jonas and accused her of being "a little unprofessional."
Chopra appeared as a yoga ambassador in Todd Strauss-Schulson's comedy Isn't It Romantic, starring Rebel Wilson, in 2019. The film earned positive reviews from critics and grossed around $49 million at the North American box office. Entertainment Weekly's Dana Schwartz believed she was "perfectly cast," but The Guardian's Benjamin Lee thought she was "not quite interesting enough." Shonali Bose's biographical drama The Sky Is Pink, in which she played mother to Aisha Chaudhary, a girl suffering from a fatal illness, saw her return to Hindi cinema later in 2019. She also produced the production and was drawn to the subject because of its blend of humour and sadness. Kate Erbland of IndieWire called her "extraordinary" as "the film's driving force, a tough-talking mama bear," and Anna M. M. Vetticad praised her "simmering restraint." The picture performed poorly at the box office. She was nominated for another Filmfare Award for Best Actress.
Streaming projects (from 2020 to the present)
Chopra's only release in 2020 was Robert Rodriguez's Netflix children's superhero film We Can Be Heroes. She played Ms. Granada, the director of Heroics, a heroic group. The film garnered mostly excellent reviews; Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times applauded the actress for "livening up the proceedings" as the stern Ms. Granada, while Ian Freer of Empire magazine thought she did "kids' film acting to the hilt." The White Tiger, an adaptation of Aravind Adiga's satirical novel of the same name, was Chopra's first film of 2021. She co-starred with Adarsh Gourav and Rajkummar Rao in this Netflix original, and she also executive produced it. The film and her performance received favourable reviews from critics. Film writer Kevin Maher called Chopra's performance "impressive" in The Times, while The Hollywood Reporter's David Rooney praised her for giving "emotional depth" to her role. At the 93rd Academy Awards, the film was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. Chopra appeared as a supporting character in the science fiction thriller The Matrix Resurrections later that year.
Chopra will next be seen in Amazon Prime Video's thriller series Citadel, with Richard Madden. After that, she'll star in the romantic comedy Love Again alongside Sam Heughan and Celine Dion. She has landed a multimillion-dollar first-look TV agreement with Amazon Prime Video as a producer to support material by first-time BIPOC and female filmmakers.
A career in music
Chopra's biggest vocal influence was her father, who encouraged her to sing. She made use of her vocal ability early in her pageantry career. Her debut recording, "Ullathai Killathe" from the Tamil film Thamizhan (2002), was done at the request of her director and co-star, Vijay (who had seen her singing on location). Chopra released her second single, "Exotic," featuring American rapper Pitbull, along with a music video in July 2013. The record also charted at 74 on the Canadian Hot 100. "Exotic" debuted at number 44 and peaked at number 12 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart. In April 2014, she released her third song, a rendition of Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me." On the Billboard Hot Dance/Electronic Songs list, the song reached at number 28.
Chopra's first song in Bollywood as a playback singer was "Chaoro", a lullaby from Mary Kom (2014). She sung the title song, a duet with Farhan Akhtar, for Dil Dhadakne Do in 2015. She made her Marathi language playback singing debut with "Baba" in a promotional song for Ventilator (2016). Chopra teamed with Australian DJ Will Sparks on "Young and Free," an EDM song she also created, in 2017.
Philanthropy
Chopra's foundation "The Priyanka Chopra Foundation for Health and Education" seeks to provide support to underprivileged children across the country in the fields of Education and Health. She gives 10% of her profits to the foundation, which pays for educational and medical expenses for seventy children in India, fifty of whom are girls. She frequently speaks out on women's problems, such as her opposition to female infanticide and foeticide and her support for girls' education. Chopra, a feminist, has always been outspoken on women's rights, gender equality, and the gender wage gap. A "day with Chopra" was auctioned off on eBay in 2006, with the revenues going to Nanhi Kali, an NGO that helps educate females in India. She has appeared in support of numerous causes, including the 2005 HELP! Telethon Concert to collect funds for victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake.

She made a documentary for the organisation Alert India in 2009 to raise awareness about leprosy. She walked the runway for Manish Malhotra and Shaina NC's charity fashion show to benefit the Cancer Patients Aid Association NGO. Chopra was one of numerous celebrities that created promotional messages for the Pearls Wave Trust, which works to end violence and abuse against women and girls. Chopra also started the "Save the Girl Child" initiative, which seeks to improve Indians' perceptions towards girls. An activist chastised Chopra at a public event in 2019 for a tweet in which she praised India's military forces while tensions between Pakistan and India were rising. She starred in an animated movie with children to support the cause, and she collected trash from the banks of the Yamuna River in Agra to raise awareness of environmental issues. She adopted up to seven communities during the third and fourth editions of Greenathon to give them with a steady source of electricity. At the Birsa nature park, she adopted a tigress in 2011 and a lioness in 2012, paying for both animals' care for a year. Chopra committed to donate her own organs after death to promote organ donation and was a co-keynote speaker at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's Bollywood-themed 20th-anniversary celebration of their liver-transplant programme in 2012.
She gave 5 million rupees (US$63,000) to Nanavati hospital to help create a cancer unit. She dedicated the ward, which is named for her late father, in 2013. The same year, she supplied English and Hindi voice-over for the documentary film Girl Rising, produced by the same group. She was asked to speak alongside Gordon Brown, Steve Wozniak, Bill Clinton, and Charlie Baker at the Hynes Convention Centre in Boston for the 50th anniversary of the World Leaders Conference. In 2014, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi chose Chopra as one of nine "Navratna" nominees for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the Government of India's national cleanliness initiative. She supported the initiative by volunteering as a sanitation worker for a day, cleaning and repairing a garbage-filled neighbourhood in Mumbai, and urging residents to keep the area clean.
In 2015, she was the voice of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals' (PETA) life-size robotic elephant named "Ellie," who visited schools around the United States and Europe to educate children about elephants and captivity, as well as to persuade people to avoid circuses. In December 2016, Chopra was named the global UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. In 2017, she earned the Power of Women award from Variety for her humanitarian work with UNICEF, as well as the Mother Teresa Memorial Award for Social Justice for her contributions to social issues. Due to the COVID-19 epidemic in India in late April 2021, Chopra and husband Nick launched a fundraising in collaboration with the NGO GiveIndia to generate funds for oxygen supply, COVID-19 care centres, testing, and immunisation initiatives. In the first few days, the fundraising had raised USD 400,000. Kevin Jonas, Chopra's brother-in-law, also encouraged his fans to contribute to the cause. By May 13, 2021, the fundraiser had reached the $1 million mark and set a new goal of $3 million for COVID-19 assistance.

Entrepreneurship and film production
Chopra founded Purple Pebble Pictures with the goal of producing low-budget films and introducing and promoting fresh talent in the Indian film industry, particularly in regional Indian cinema. Her first Marathi film, the 2016 comedy-drama Ventilator, was a box office triumph and earned her three National Film Awards nominations. She went on to create many regional language films in India, including Pahuna: The Little Visitors (2018) and Paani (2019), which won the National Film Award for Best Film on Environment Conservation/Preservation at the 66th National Film Awards.
Chopra began investing in technology startups in 2018 by funding Holberton School, a coding education startup, and Bumble, a dating and social networking app. In October 2018, Chopra helped launch the Bumble app in India. She was said to have invested in the US-based rental marketplace Apartment List in 2021. Chopra stated at the Startup India Prarambh event 2021 that "ideas are the currency of the present" and that she was looking forward to investing in a combination of beauty and digital firms. The same month, she debuted her "Anamoly Haircare" collection, which debuted exclusively in Target stores in the United States on February 1, 2021, with plans to expand globally later that year.

Chopra served on the Miss India pageant's judging panel in 2007. "Miss India will always be special," she said. That is where it all began for me. And perhaps it would have ended there if I hadn't won the crown." She was also a Miss World 2009 judge. She paid a visit to Jawan troops in Tenga, eastern India, for a special edition of the NDTV show Jai Jawan commemorating India's 60th anniversary of independence.
In 2010, she took over as presenter of the third season of the Colours channel's reality show Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi from previous host Akshay Kumar. According to competitors, Chopra had "transformed into quite a whip-wielding dictator" while hosting the series, incessantly pressing the contestants to work. Writing
In 2009, Chopra began writing an opinion column for the Hindustan Times. She contributed 50 columns to the publication. "I'm a private person and never thought that I could express my feelings," she stated after her first year of writing. But, surprisingly, whenever I got down to write this piece, my deepest feelings surfaced." She met numerous readers who had offered input on her weekly column in March 2009. She continued to write for newspapers on the side. In August 2012, she penned a post for The Times of India headlined "No Woman in Mumbai Feels Safe Any Longer," in which she discussed the murder of Pallavi Purkayastha, 25, whom she met while working on Don. Chopra shared her thoughts on the safety of women in cities in the piece. Chopra opposed female genital mutilation and child marriage in a July 2014 Guardian essay.
Later that year, Chopra published an op-ed in The New York Times titled "What Jane Austen Knew" regarding the significance of girls' education. She lauded and quoted Nobel Peace Prize winners Malala Yousafzai and Kailash Satyarthi, and told how, at the age of nine, she joined her parents as they gave their time to provide modern health care to the rural poor. Chopra began writing a monthly piece for Elle called "Pret-a-Priyanka" in late 2014. She discussed diversity and being a global citizen in an article published in January 2015. Chopra's first memoir, Unfinished, was published by Penguin Random House on February 9, 2021. Molly Sprayregen of the Associated Press called the book a "deeply open and honest account" in a review, stating, "Chopra Jonas' writing is open, engaging, and full of energy." Private life
Chopra has a close relationship with her family, especially her younger brother, Siddharth, and resides on the same floor as them. Her father, who died in June 2013, was very devoted to her; in 2012, she got a tattoo that read "Daddy's lil girl" in his handwriting. She describes herself as a self-made woman despite not having a cinema background. Her mother, a well-known gynaecologist in Bareilly, gave up her practise to assist Chopra as she pursued a career in film.
