Park Soo-young (Korean: ; born September 3, 1996) is a South Korean singer, actress, and host better known by her stage name Joy. In August 2014, she made her debut as a member of the South Korean girl group Red Velvet. Joy made her acting debut in 2017 and has since starred in the television dramas The Liar and His Lover (2017), Tempted (2018), The One and Only (2021), and Once Upon a Small Town (2022).
Joy made her solo debut in 2021 with the release of her special album Hello.
Early years
Park Soo-young was born on the island of Jeju and raised in the Seoul neighbourhood of Dobong. She is the middle child of three sisters. Joy was influenced to become a singer as a child after receiving praise for her rendition of Korean rock band Cherry Filter's song "Flying Duck" during a grade school festival. Joy auditioned for SM Entertainment at the SM Global Audition in Seoul in 2012 and was cast.
Career s2014–present: Group activities and debut

A vocal coach gave her the stage name "Joy" after two years of training. On July 29, 2014, Joy was introduced as the fourth member of Red Velvet. Joy was the only member of the group who was not introduced as a member of SM Rookies, an SM Entertainment pre-debut training team. Red Velvet made their debut with the digital single "Happiness" in August 2014. During their promotion, the group was named one of the most powerful celebrities in South Korea by Forbes Korea Power Celebrity in 2018 and 2019, and they gained global recognition, with Billboard naming them one of the most popular K-pop groups in the world.
2015-2020: Individual activities
Joy made her solo television debut in June 2015 with the fourth season of MBC variety show We Got Married, where she was paired with BtoB member Yook Sung-jae. Joy was honoured for her participation, receiving the New Star Award and the Best Couple Award at the 2015 MBC Entertainment Awards. Joy also released a duet with Yook called "Young Love" in April 2016, for which Joy received songwriting credit. Before leaving in May 2016, they were known as one of the show's longest-running and most popular couples.
Joy and Lim Seul-ong released a duet titled "Always In My Heart" in November 2016. The song peaked at number one on several charts, including the Gaon Digital Chart.
Joy made her acting debut in 2017 as the female lead in The Liar and His Lover, a South Korean adaptation of Kotomi Aoki's popular manga Kanojo wa Uso o Aishisugiteru. Due to the musical nature of the drama, Joy released several OSTs, including "Yeowooya", "I'm Okay", "Your Days", "Shiny Boy", "Waiting For You", and "The Way to Me". Joy received the Newcomer Award at the OSEN Cable TV Awards for her performance as lead actress. Joy appeared on the singing variety show King of Mask Singer under the alias Bandabi in July 2017, where she advanced to the next round of competition.
Joy began her first fixed hosting position in 2018 as the co-host of JTBC's Sugar Man's second season, alongside top TV personalities Yoo Jae-suk, You Hee-yeol, and Park Na-rae. Joy recorded the OST "OMG!" for MBC's drama Tempted, which was loosely based on the French novel Les Liaisons dangereuses. Joy was nominated for several awards for her performance, including Best Actress at the 2018 MBC Drama Awards and Popularity Award (Drama Actress) at The Seoul Awards. Joy, along with Song Ji-hyo and Jang Yoon-ju, was chosen as one of the hosts of Lifetime's new variety show Pajama Friends in July 2018. In October of that year, Joy released the soundtrack song "Dream Me" (co-written with Mark Lee) for the KBS drama The Ghost Detective.
Joy was named the main host of the popular beauty show OnStyle's Get It Beauty in January 2019, alongside former Pajama Friends co-host Jang Yoon-ju. Joy joined the athletic variety show Handsome Tigers in December 2019 as the manager of Seo Jang-basketball hoon's team, which included celebrities such as Lee Sang-yoon and Cha Eun-woo. Joy won the Best Female Variety Idol Award at the 2020 Brand Customer Loyalty Awards after receiving positive feedback in variety shows.
Joy released her solo OST "Introduce Me a Good Person" for the soundtrack of tvN's drama Hospital Playlist in March 2020. The song reached number one on several charts, including the Billboard K-Pop Hot 100 Chart, the Gaon Digital Chart, and has surpassed 500 Million Digital Index Points on Gaon. Joy then joined prominent Korean artists in the multi-collaboration project "Evergreen Tree" in April 2020 to support medical professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic. Joy appeared on R&B artist Crush's lead single "Mayday," which topped the charts on several Korean music platforms in May 2020. "Introduce Me to a Good Person" was nominated for Song of the Year Daesang (Grand Prize), Best OST Award, and Song of the Year Daesang (Grand Prize) at the Mnet Asian Music Awards, as well as Best OST at the 30th Seoul Music Awards. Joy was nominated as a soloist for Top 10 Artist of the Year Bonsang (Main Prize) at the 2020 Melon Music Awards, as well as Artist of the Year Daesang at the 2020 Genie Music Awards.
2021–present: Solo debut, acting comeback, and growing popularity
Joy made her official solo debut on May 12, 2021, with a special album consisting of six remake songs from the 1990s to the 2000s. Joy's extended play Hello was released on May 31, with the title track reaching number one on multiple charts and the album charting at number one in 26 countries on the iTunes Top Album charts. All six tracks from the album debuted at number one on the Gaon Digital Chart, and Joy also topped the Melon Female Solo Artist Chart. Joy's title track "Hello" also made the Top 10 of Billboard's K-Pop Hot 100, with 5 tracks from her solo debut album making the chart in total. Joy's solo debut album Hello was nominated for Album of the Year Daesang (Grand Prize) at the 2021 Melon Music Awards on November 8, 2021. Joy was also nominated as a soloist for the MMA Top 10 Artist Bonsang Award for the second year in a row (Main Prize). Joy was nominated for Artist of the Year (Digital Music - May) at the Gaon Music Awards on November 27, 2021. Joy was also nominated for the Best Digital Song Bonsang at the 36th Golden Disc Awards in December, as well as the Main Award (Bonsang) at the 31st Seoul Music Awards. In addition, Joy's "Hello" was named one of the Top 25 Best K-pop Songs of 2021 by NME.
Joy made her acting debut again on December 20, 2021, in the JTBC drama The One and Only. At the 2022 Brand Customer Loyalty Awards, Joy was nominated for Best Actress Idol and Best Variety Idol. Joy was announced as the star of KakaoTV's original drama Once Upon a Small Town, which will premiere worldwide on Netflix on September 5, 2022.
Joy and Wonstein released the single "Love Song" as part of the World Peace Project on October 21, 2022, with proceeds going to UNICEF Korea.
Public perception
Joy was named to Gallup Korea's annual list of the Top 20 Most Popular Idols in 2019. Joy was ranked among the top five most popular female K-pop idols in another survey of South Korean soldiers serving mandatory military service. K-pop Radar confirmed in their annual list that Joy's Instagram account _imyour joy had the most Instagram followers of any K-pop female artist who opened an account in 2019. Joy has also won the "Individual Girl Group Members Brand Power Ranking" published by the Korean Corporate Reputation Research Institute several times.
In February 2020, Joy was invited as a VIP guest of Michael Kors to attend New York Fashion Week, with Vogue calling Joy "one of K-brightest pop's stars".
As a performer, Joy's voice has been praised by a number of musicians and producers, including composer Hwang Hyun, singer-songwriter You Hee-yeol, and producer Ma Joo-hee. Joy became the first SM Female Artist without a solo debut to be nominated for a Bonsang (Main Prize) in 2020. Joy was named the new Ambassador for Tod's in Korea on August 13, 2021, after becoming a muse for Tod's Italian luxury brand, Hogan, in February 2021. Joy was named the face and model for Calvin Klein's latest campaign in Korea in September 2021. Joy was named a Calvin Klein muse in January 2022. Philanthropy
Joy donated 10 million won to the Community Chest of Korea in February 2020 to help those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in South Korea.
