Fans of Martin Scorsese can celebrate because the celebrated director is returning to one of his earlier works, namely his adaptation of the Herbert Asbury novel The Gangs of New York.
It's not a sequel, so don't be scared. Instead, a TV series based on the source material is being developed by Miramax Television, and Scorsese has offered to executive produce as well as helm the first two episodes.
The Gangs of New York, written by Herbert Asbury, is a non-fiction book that explores the history of its titular subject in the second half of the 19th century, before the Italian-American mafia came to dominance in the 1920s.
In the 2002 version of Scorsese's Gangs of New York, Leonardo Dicaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Cameron Diaz all starred.
Despite the fact that critics generally regarded Gangs of New York as decent but not Scorsese's best work, the movie failed to win any Academy Awards after its premiere, despite the director being universally regarded as one of the masters of cinema.
However, Daniel Day-Lewis' performance did win praise from other professional organisations including the British Film Industry Association.
Contrarily, Cameron Diaz, who was widely seen as having been miscast and who wore a rather terrible Irish accent for the role, was not well received in the movie.
The release date for Scorsese's second effort to adapt The Gangs of New York has not yet been announced, but we wouldn't plan on it happening anytime soon.
The director recently debuted the documentary Personality Crisis: One Night Only, and next year will see the release of his next feature, Killers of the Flower Moon, as well as his executive production work on Hulu's The Devil in White City.
