Oh Yeon-seo (Korean:, born Oh Haet-nim on June 22, 1987) is a South Korean actress, singer, and model best known for her roles in the television dramas My Husband Got a Family (2012), Jang Bo-ri is Here! (2014), Shine or Go Crazy (2015), Come Back Mister (2016), My Sassy Girl (2017), A Korean Odyssey (2017-18), Love with Flaws (2019-20), Mad for Each Other (2021 (2022).
Early years
Oh grew up in Changnyeong County after being born in Jinju, South Gyeongsang Province. Oh attended an audition for SM Entertainment in Daegu in his second year of middle school, but was turned down. However, another company contacted her and informed her that she had qualified, and she relocated to Seoul, making her debut four months later at the age of fifteen.
After her band disbanded, Oh was accepted into Anyang Arts High School and went on to become an actress. After consulting a shaman with her mother, she changed her name from Haet-nim to Yeon-seo.
Oh then enrolled at Dongguk University, where he studied theatre and film.
Career sBeginnings
Oh Yeon-seo made her entertainment debut in 2002, at the age of 15, with the SidusHQ-managed band Luv, under her birth name Oh Haet-nim. The singles "Orange Girl" and "I Still Believe in You" were taken from their debut album, Story. The band only lasted six months before disbanding. Oh then moved on to acting, making her debut in the 2003 drama Sharp, but she remained unknown.
Rising popularity in 2012-2013
Despite having a major role in the 2009 film A Blood Pledge, she did not gain recognition until she was cast in the family drama My Husband Has a Family (2012). She then appeared on the popular variety show We Got Married with MBLAQ's Lee Joon. Towards the end of 2012, Oh was cast in daily drama Here Comes Mr. Oh where she had her first lead role.
In the 2013 medical drama Medical Top Team, Oh portrayed a thoracic resident surgeon. In August, she was named an ambassador for the first-ever Animal Film Festival in Suncheon, alongside Kim Min-jun and Kal So-won, to help raise awareness for animal rights and welfare. Oh, along with actor Ryu Soo-young, was also named a Red Cross Ambassador.
2014 to the present: Breakthrough
Oh starred as Jang Bo-ri, a compassionate and selfless character, in the critically acclaimed series Jang Bo-ri is Here! (2014). The drama's ratings peaked at 40.4%, propelling Oh to new heights of popularity. She struggled with the character because she grew up in Gyeongsang-do, but her character had to speak in the Jeolla-do dialect, which she had never used in her life.
Oh co-starred with Jang Hyuk in the 2015 historical drama Shine or Go Crazy as Shin Yool, the last princess of Balhae. The show was a modest success, consistently topping ratings in its time slot.
Oh then starred alongside Rain in the SBS drama Please Come Back, Mister, which aired from February to April, 2016. She portrayed Han Hong-nan, a male reincarnated in a female body. Oh was praised for her chemistry with co-star Lee Ha-nui, with whom she previously appeared in Shine or Go Crazy. Her comedic portrayal of her masculine role also impressed viewers. The same year, she starred in Take Off 2, the sequel to the 2009 film Take Off, in which she plays a member of South Korea's first female national ice hockey team.
Oh co-starred in the 2017 historical drama remake of the 2001 box office hit My Sassy Girl with Joo Won. Oh signed with new management firm Celltrion Entertainment in August 2017. The same year, she was cast in the Hong sisters' fantasy romantic comedy/tragedy drama A Korean Odyssey on tvN.
Oh co-starred in the film adaptation of Cheese in the Trap with Park Hae-jin, who also played Yoo Jung in the drama.
Oh was cast in the romantic comedy drama Love with Flaws in 2019. Oh re-signed with SidusHQ in October 2019.
Oh appeared in the web drama Mad for Each Other, which premiered on May 24, 2021, alongside Jung Woo. Oh will officially sign with Story J Company in November 2021.
In 2022, she co-starred with Seo In-guk in Café Minamdang as Han Jae-hui, a third-year homicide detective.
Later that year, Oh returned to the big screen in Men of Plastic, which will be released in November and stars Ma Dong-seok, Jung Kyung-ho, and Oh Na-ra.
Private life
Oh's relationship with actor Kim Bum was confirmed on March 29, 2018. They were reported to have split up after a few months of dating.
