Malaika Arora (born 23 October 1973) is a Hindi-language film actress, dancer, model, VJ, and television personality. She made her debut as a film producer in 2008, co-founding the company Arbaaz Khan Productions with her ex-husband Arbaaz Khan, which produced the Dabangg film series. She has appeared in films such as Kaante (2002) and EMI (2008) as a lead actress. Chaiyya Chaiyya (1998), Gur Naalo Ishq Mitha (1998), Maahi Ve (2002), Kaal Dhamaal (2005), and Munni Badnaam Hui (2010) were also songs she sang.
Background and early life
Malaika Arora was called after the Swahili term malaika, which means "angel" (derived from the Arabic plural form malika). Her birthplace is Thane, Maharashtra. When she was 11 years old, her parents split, and she relocated to Chembur with her mother and sister Amrita. Joyce Polycarp, her mother, is Malayali, while her father, Anil Arora, is a Punjabi from the Indian border town of Fazilka who worked in the Indian Merchant Navy.
Swami Vivekanand School in Chembur was where she finished her secondary studies. Grace Polycarp, her aunt, was the school's principal. She is also a graduate of Holy Cross High School Thane, where she attended through the ninth grade. She attended Jai Hind College, Churchgate, but did not complete her studies due to professional obligations. Before beginning her modeling career, she lived in Borla Society, Chembur, beside Basant Talkies.
Career
When MTV India first began operations, Arora was chosen as one of the VJs. She began her career as an interviewer, and later co-hosted the shows Love Line and Style Check with Cyrus Broacha. Malaika then began her career as a model, appearing in numerous advertisements for album songs such as Bally Sagoo's "Gur Naalo Ishq Mitha" opposite Jas Arora and item numbers such as "Chaiyya Chaiyya" in the 1998 Bollywood film Dil Se...
She appeared in the item song "Munni Badnaam Hui" in the film Dabangg, which was produced by her ex-husband Arbaaz Khan, in 2010. On March 12, 2011, she helped create a world record by leading a choreographed dance to "Munni Badnaam" with 1235 people.
In 2012, she was a celebrity endorser for Taiwan Excellence. She backed Dabur's 30-plus. She claims she never wanted to be an actress. She performed live with Atif Aslam, Shaan, and Bipasha Basu at the LG Arena in Birmingham and The O2 Arena in London.
She stated in 2014 that she would feature in the Farah Khan-directed action comedy-drama film Happy New Year as a cameo.
Television
Malaika was one of three judges on the television show Nach Baliye. In the middle of 2005, the show aired on STAR One. She returned as a judge in Nach Baliye 2, which premiered in the fourth quarter of 2006. She performed many item numbers as an example for the participants on this show. She was a judge on the STAR One show Zara Nachke Dikha. In 2010, she was a judge in the reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa.
Malaika is a judge on the reality show India's Got Talent. She served as a judge and host for MTV Supermodel of the Year in 2019 and will serve as a judge for India's Best Dancer in 2020.
Malaika married Bollywood actor-director-producer Arbaaz Khan in 1998, whom she met while working on a coffee ad. Malaika Arora Khan was her married name from the time she married Arbaaz till they divorced. They announced their breakup on March 28, 2016, claiming compatibility concerns. On May 11, 2017, the couple filed for divorce. Arhaan Khan, their son, was born on November 9, 2002. According to the Bandra Family Court settlement, Malaika has custody of the son following the divorce, while Arbaaz has visiting rights to his son. Her former brothers-in-law are Bollywood star Salman Khan and actor-director-producer Sohail Khan. Salim Khan, her ex-husband's father-in-law, was a screenwriter.
Since 2016, Malaika has been in a relationship with actor Arjun Kapoor. Arora was involved in an accident on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway in April 2022 when three automobiles crashed as she was going home after an event. She was transported to the Apollo Hospital in Navi Mumbai for stitches.
Malaika went vegan in 2020.
