Leila Kong (Chinese: ;born 5 December 1981) is a Hong Kong actress best known as Leila Tong / Tong Ning (Chinese: ). She was born into a Cantonese-speaking Indonesian household. Throughout her childhood and adolescence, her birth name appears in her works.
Kong made her cinematic debut at the age of eight in director John Woo's action-comedy Once A Thief, which was nominated for multiple awards at the 11th Annual Hong Kong cinematic Awards. Kong was then signed as a child star by TVB, and she has since acted in dramas such as The Greed of Man and State of Divinity.
She took a three-year vacation from the entertainment industry as an adult to attend a design school. Kong has turned down TVB's offer to handle her personally.
Before 2004, her most popular works included Aqua Heroes and Square Pegs, both of which starred Roger Kwok and Jessica Hsuen.
In 2004, she was chosen to film CCTV's Liao Zhai with a slew of emerging mainland Chinese stars. The drama was immensely successful and revolved around Liao Zhai II. She also appeared in CCTV's Twin of Brothers, opposite Raymond Lam, Ron Ng, Tavia Yeung, and Li Qian. Later that year, she co-starred with Nick Cheung, Raymond Lam, and Sonija Kwok in The Last Breakthrough. Although The Last Breakthrough did not receive high ratings in Hong Kong, it is still remembered and regarded by many as one of the most meaningful and touching series produced by TVB.
Life Made Simple, the modern sequel to Square Pegs, was filmed with the same cast and released in 2005. With Wars of in Laws, which also starred Bosco Wong, the series ended up being one of the highest rated of 2005.
Kong has twice been nominated for TVB's "Most Improved Actress" award. She debuted in 2004 with Aqua Heroes and Square Pegs. Later that year, she made the top ten list with her roles as Angel in Life Made Simple and Ha Hiu Ching in The Last Breakthrough. Bar Benders was Kong's lone series to air in 2006, yet it was one of TVB's top five series of the year.
In 2007, two of her shows, Ten Brothers and Family Link, were among the top five dramas on TVB. Kong also appeared in War and Destiny, and her performance was met with applause and critical acclaim. CCTV recruited her to star in The Last Princess alongside Sammul Chan. In mainland China, the show was favorably received. Singing with the Moon, her first Mandarin music album, was released in Beijing in December.
The next year, in 2008, she starred in TVB's The Greatness of a Hero as Shangguan Wan'er, a well-known historical character. Sunny Chan, Kent Cheng, Bernice Liu, and Sonija Kwok also appeared in the drama. She worked with Kenneth Ma again in a new ancient drama, Man in Charge, starring Kate Tsui. She filmed L For Love L For Lies for the second time with Stephy Tang and Alex Fong.
Personal life
In 2010, Kong married Desmond Tang. The couple met while working on the theatrical piece Popcorn Killer () and dated for three years. On September 10, 2010, Kong posted a photo of herself and Tang on Weibo to announce their engagement, with the caption "To all my good friends, thank you all for being by my side to witness my growth." I'd like to inform everyone that I'm about to embark on a new chapter in my life! I'm going to announce to everyone that I'm getting married!" The couple declared that instead of a wedding feast, they would celebrate with a lunch with family from both sides of the family. Chun Chun, her baby son, was born in March 2011. Kong announced the birth of her second child, a baby girl, through caesarian section, in January 2015. However, they divorced in 2017.
Kong is an animal welfare and environmental conservationist. In order to accurately portray her stance, she went vegetarian in 2013.
