(2016).
Lee Da-hae is well-known in China for her ability to communicate fluently in Korean, Japanese, English, and Chinese. She is the first Korean actress to perform in Chinese dramas by speaking her lines in Mandarin.
Early years
Lee Da-hae, also known by her birth name Byun Da-hye, was born on April 19, 1984 in Seoul, South Korea. Lee and her family moved to Sydney, Australia, when she was in fifth grade. She was known as the "Korean Dancer Girl" at school and performed traditional Korean dance in various festivals throughout her adolescence. Her years of living and studying in Australia allowed her to become fluent in both English and Chinese. Lee and her mother returned to Seoul in her junior year at Burwood Girls High School after winning a pageant while on leave of absence. She now lives in Seoul with her mother, while her father and older brother remain in Sydney.
Career
2001-2004: Beginnings and mainstream acceptance
Byun made her debut in the entertainment industry in 2001, when she won the 71st Miss Chunhyang Pageant. She began appearing in minor and supporting roles in television dramas under the stage name Lee Da-hae.
Lee made her acting debut in the Im Sung-han drama Lotus Flower Fairy (also known internationally as Heaven's Fate) in 2004, playing the pure-hearted daughter of a shaman who becomes estranged from her family and society after her identity is revealed. Her performance earned her the title of Best New Actress at the 41st Baeksang Arts Awards.
From 2005 to 2009, there was an increase in success.
However, 2005 would be Lee's breakthrough year. In two successful but very different series, she demonstrated her versatility. In Green Rose, her character falls in love with a man who is framed for her father's attempted murder; years later, she gradually comes to believe that a doppelgänger is, in fact, her boyfriend, whom everyone assumed was dead. Lee reunited with her Lotus Flower Fairy co-stars Jung Hye-sun and Han Jin-hee in Green Rose, her first SBS TV series. She portrayed a lovable con artist in My Girl, who agrees to pose as a hotelier's long-lost cousin in order to fulfil his grandfather's final wishes. My Girl, in particular, catapulted Lee to domestic and Korean Wave fame.
In 2007, she returned to the romantic comedy genre with Hello! Miss. Lee portrayed the last surviving daughter of a once-respected clan in the countryside, whose traditional feminine virtues are tested when the son of a wealthy investor demands she sell her ancestral home to him.
She starred in the 2008 film Robber as a young widowed single mother who is targeted by a con man for her savings, but he falls in love with her for real. Later that year, Lee was cast as the heroine in the intergenerational epic East of Eden, which takes place in a coal mining town in Taebaek from the 1960s to the present. Lee reunited with her Sweet 18 co-star Han Ji-hye in this series. Though the drama was a success, Lee's screen time gradually decreased in favour of other storylines, and she decided to leave the show in episode 40.
From 2009 to 2014, there was a surge in popularity.
In 2009, Lee signed with Rain's agency, J. Tune Entertainment, and appeared in the music video for "Pas de Deux" with Taiwanese singer/actor Will Pan. She was also accepted at Konkuk University, where she studied Theater and Film.
Lee starred in the popular Joseon period/fusion drama In 2010, The Slave Hunters, in which she played Un-nyun, a yangban-turned-slave hunter torn between her past love and her current companion, a general-turned-slave. Lee reunited with her co-stars from Green Rose, Lee Jong-hyuk and Sung Dong-il. Some viewers chastised her early in the series for wearing pristine makeup and manicured nails despite portraying a slave on the run, for allegedly wearing a wrist watch onscreen, and for allegedly "inappropriate and gratuitous" cleavage exposure when her hanbok top was removed in an attempted rape scene. Lee believed that those issues were minor and had been exaggerated by the show's popularity. Her character was also chastised for being an overly passive damsel in distress, and a "Public Menace Un-nyun" () meme circulated, prompting writer Chun Sung-il to publicly defend and apologise to Lee.
She was cast in Song of Springs, a 3D film adaptation of Kim Hoon's novel about the creator of the gayageum, which would have been her big screen debut. However, funding fell through, and the film was never completed.
She was then cast in Gabi, adapted from Kim Tak-historical hwan's fiction novel Russian Coffee, as Korea's first female royal barista who plots to assassinate King Gojong using poisoned coffee. Lee verbally agreed to star in the film, but when she dropped out ten days before filming began, production company Ocean Film sued her for breach of contract. The court ruled in favour of the plaintiff in September 2012, ordering Lee to pay 21 million (US$19,000) in damages, or 40% liability. Kim So-yeon took Lee's place.
Miss Ripley, released in 2011, starred Lee as an antiheroine with a traumatic past who lies and manipulates her way up the hotel executive ladder and into the hearts of two powerful men. She described the role as "a watershed moment in her acting career." Lee was inspired by Shin Jeong-ah, a former curator convicted of forging her academic credentials and embezzling funds, and the title alludes to the Hollywood film The Talented Mr. Ripley.
Lee, who is fluent in both English and Mandarin and has over six million followers on her Weibo microblog, made her Chinese television drama debut in 2012. Previous Korean actresses in Chinese productions spoke their lines in Korean and were later dubbed, but Lee worked hard to master the language and fully memorised her lines, making her the first Korean actress to perform in Mandarin. She played a part-timer raising her niece on her own in Love Recipe (internationally known as Love Actually), opposite Taiwanese actor Joe Cheng, who discovers her talent for cooking at a dim sum restaurant and dreams of becoming a chef. It was filmed in Shanghai and broadcast on Hunan TV. Her contract with DBM Entertainment expired that year, and she signed with a new agency, Forestar Entertainment.
Lee appeared in the 2013 espionage-action drama Iris II, the sequel to the 2009 hit series. This was her third collaboration with Jang Hyuk, following Robber (2008) and The Slave Hunters (2009). (2010).
In 2014, Lee joined a new agency, FNC Entertainment. In Hotel King, she reunited with previous My Girl co-star Lee Dong-wook, playing an heiress attempting to save the family-owned seven-star hotel. Lee landed seven endorsement deals with clothing and cosmetic brands across Asia after the end of Hotel King.
Acting setbacks in 2015 and 2018.
Lee was then cast in the Korean-Chinese drama Best Couple as a top actress forced to marry an actor she despises; it is the first TV series produced by Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba and aired in China in early 2016. It has received over 100 million views.
Lee left FNC Entertainment in April 2016 to sign an exclusive contract with JS Pictures.
Lee will return to Korean television in 2018 to star in the SBS drama Good Witch.
