Kriti Sanon (born July 27, 1990) is an Indian actress who works primarily in Hindi and Telugu films. She briefly worked as a fashion model after graduating from the Jaypee Institute of Information Technology with a degree in engineering. Sanon made her acting debut as the lead in the 2014 action films 1: Nenokkadine and Heropanti. Her performance in the latter earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.
Sanon's career advanced with starring roles in the commercially successful romantic comedies Bareilly Ki Barfi (2017) and Luka Chuppi (2019), and her highest-grossing films were the ensemble comedies Dilwale (2015) and Housefull 4 (2019). She won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her performance as a surrogate mother in Mimi (2021).
Background and early life
Sanon was born on July 27, 1990, in New Delhi to chartered accountant Rahul Sanon and physics professor Geeta Sanon of the University of Delhi. Her parents are Punjabi. She attended Delhi Public School in R. K. Puram before graduating from Jaypee Institute of Information Technology in Noida with a Bachelor of Technology degree in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering. Before becoming an actress, she briefly worked as a model. Nupur, her sister, is also an actress. Sanon was named to Forbes India's 2019 Celebrity 100 list. She has her own clothing line and fitness company, and she has also served as an ambassador for several brands and products.
Early work (2014–2020)
Sanon made her acting debut in 2014 with the Telugu psychological action thriller 1: Nenokkadine, in which she played Mahesh Babu's love interest. She had to participate in action sequences filmed at sea for the part, which made her nervous because she didn't know how to swim. Reviewers for The Times of India and Sify praised her beauty and encouraged her acting abilities. After finishing the first schedule of 1: Nenokkadine, Sanon was cast in Heropanti, a Hindi action film starring newcomer Tiger Shroff; she split her time between the two projects. Trade journalist Taran Adarsh opined that Sanon "has the trappings of a star", but critic Srijana Das of The Times of India criticized her emoting, calling it "more cheesy than sharp". Heropanti became a commercial success. Sanon won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut and the IIFA Award for Star Debut of the Year - Female for Heropanti, for which she was nominated for the SIIMA Award for Best Female Debut - Telugu.
Sanon's second Telugu film, Dohchay, co-starring Naga Chaitanya, was released the following year. She was then cast in Rohit Shetty's action comedy Dilwale, alongside Varun Dhawan, Shah Rukh Khan, and Kajol, which became one of India's highest-grossing films at the time, grossing more than 3.72 billion (US$47 million) worldwide. Anupama Chopra disliked the film and wrote that Sanon and Dhawan "work as bait, meant to bring in the critical youth segment".
After a year away from the big screen, Sanon reunited with Maddock Films producer Dinesh Vijan in his directorial debut Raabta (2017), which starred her and Sushant Singh Rajput as star-crossed lovers. Sukanya Verma of Rediff.com called the film "embarrassingly daft," but praised Sanon's "statuesque, spirited presence" in a scathing review. The film was a commercial flop. In Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari's romantic comedy Bareilly Ki Barfi, Sanon played a headstrong small-town woman aspiring to a better life. The film, which co-starred Ayushmann Khurrana and Rajkummar Rao as her love interests, was based on the novel The Ingredients of Love by French writer Nicholas Barreau. Although Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV stated that "the burden of making Bareilly Ki Barfi work rests on Kriti Sanon and she doesn't put a foot wrong," Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express felt that Sanon's performance lacked naturalism.
In 2019, Sanon appeared in two of Vijan's productions. She co-starred in Laxman Utekar's Hindi directorial debut, Luka Chuppi, a satire on live-in relationships, opposite Kartik Aaryan. Filmfare's Devesh Sharma praised her comedic timing. Luka Chuppi was a commercial success, grossing $1.29 billion (US$16 million) worldwide. After appearing in the unremarkable comedy Arjun Patiala, Sanon starred as one of the leading ladies in the reincarnation comedy Housefull 4, the fourth installment of the Housefull franchise, opposite Akshay Kumar. Despite negative reviews, Housefull 4 was one of the year's top earners, grossing over 2.8 billion (US$35 million). Sanon played Parvatibai opposite Arjun Kapoor's Sadashivrao Bhau in Ashutosh Gowariker's period drama Panipat, based on the Third Battle of Panipat, which was a box-office flop.
Mimi and further afield (2021–present)
32-year-old Sanon reunited with Vijan and Utekar for the comedy-drama Mimi (2021), which proved to be a watershed moment in her career. It was a remake of the 2011 Marathi drama Mala Aai Vhhaychy!, and she played the title character, an aspiring actress who becomes a surrogate mother. Sanon put on 15kg for scenes involving her character's pregnancy. The film was made available digitally through Netflix and JioCinema. The film received mixed reviews from critics, but Sanon's performance was lauded, with Mashable India calling it a career-high. WION's Pallabi Dey Purkayastha wrote that Sanon had succeeded in her "attempt to establish herself as a standalone actor, not just a pretty heroine," and she praised her performance's subtlety. Sanon won the IIFA Award for Best Actress as well as the Filmfare Award for Best Actress.
Sanon's next film, the comedy Hum Do Hamare Do (2021), in which she co-stars with Rajkummar Rao, debuted on Disney+ Hotstar. Saibal Chatterjee found hers to be "the most noteworthy performance in unfunny caper". Her first film in 2022 was the action comedy Bachchhan Paandey, her second collaboration with Akshay Kumar. Sanon played a role originally played by a male actor in the 2014 Tamil film Jigarthanda. The film's 180 crores (US$23 million) investment was not recouped. Bhediya, the third installment in Dinesh Vijan's horror-comedy universe, starred Sanon and Varun Dhawan. It was shot over a two-month period in various locations throughout Arunachal Pradesh. Despite her limited screen time, Sonal Dedhia of News18 noted how much she stood out in the film.
Sanon will next be seen in Vikas Bahl's action film Ganapath, alongside Tiger Shroff. She will co-star with Prabhas and Saif Ali Khan in Om Raut's mythological film Adipurush (2023). She will also reteam with Kartik Aaryan in Shehzada, a remake of the Telugu film Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo, and star in an untitled romantic comedy with Shahid Kapoor.
