Kim Hyun-joo (born April 24, 1977) is a South Korean actress. She is best known for her roles as the lead in the television dramas Glass Slippers (2002), Toji, the Land (2004), Twinkle Twinkle (2011), What Happens to My Family? (2014), and I Have a Lover (2015). (2015).
Career s1996–2001: Early acting experience
When Kim Hyun-joo was in her third year of high school, she began modelling in teen magazines. She made her acting debut in 1996, when she appeared in the music video for Kim Hyun-"Lifetime." chul's One's Kim made her acting debut in the 1997 television drama The Reason I Live (1997). Despite her inexperience, she was cast in the lead role in If It Snows on Christmas (1998) alongside Park Yong-ha, followed by Calla (1999) alongside Song Seung-heon.
Kim expanded her resume by appearing in supporting roles on television after appearing in a few sitcoms. In 1999, she landed her first major role in the Jang Dong-gun film Springtime (also known as Youth), which received mixed reviews. However, Kim's career was boosted later that year by the success of Into the Sunlight. In early 2000, she appeared in "Insomnia, Manual, and Orange Juice," episode 7 of Song Ji-omnibus na's drama Love Story. Kim then landed her first TV lead role in Virtue (Deok-yi), followed by more supporting roles in Her House (starring Kim Nam-joo) and the historical drama Sangdo (based on Choi In-novel ho's about Joseon merchant Im Sang-ok) in 2001.
Glass Slippers achieves success between 2002 and 2005.
Kim rose to prominence in 2002 as the Cinderella-esque lead in Glass Slippers, a story about two sisters who were separated as children and unknowingly cross paths as adults. The drama, which also starred Kim Ji-ho, Han Jae-suk, and So Ji-sub, was a ratings success, with ratings exceeding 30%, and Kim received acting and popularity awards at the SBS Drama Awards. Glass Slippers was also a success in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Vietnam, and with Kim's new pan-Asian popularity, she starred in the martial arts film Star Runner alongside Taiwanese actor/singer Vanness Wu (2003).
Ms. Kim's Million Dollar Quest (also known as Miss Kim's One Billion Won Project and Miss Kim's Adventures in Making a Million) stars her and Ji Jin-hee as a girl left at the altar and a bankrupt playboy who join forces in a moneymaking scheme. In the body swapping comedy film Shinsukki Blues, Kim played Lee Sung-love jae's interest.
Kim starred as Choi Seo-hee in Toji, the Land, a television adaptation of Park Kyung-celebrated ni's novel Toji ("The Land"), which depicted the lives and loves of peasants and nobility ("yangban") in Korea at the turn of the twentieth century, from Japan's colonial rule to the division of the peninsula. The big-budget production was a success, and Kim was nominated for Best TV Actress at the 2006 Baeksang Arts Awards.
Marrying a Millionaire (2005), inspired by the American TV show Joe Millionaire, was about an average guy (Go Soo) pretending to be rich as the concept for a dating reality show, who then genuinely falls for one of the contestants (Kim), the only girl who knows the truth. Kim took a two-year break after marrying a millionaire. She later stated that she took a break because she disliked being typecast in roles that portrayed a gentle and innocent image. However, she later stated that she regretted her decision and that she should have worked harder to overcome her career slump.
2007-2010: Revival
Kim returned to television in 2007 with In-soon Is Pretty, in which she played the titular character, who was imprisoned for unintentionally killing someone in high school and, after serving her sentence, must face prejudice as an ex-con while rebuilding her life. Despite the drama's low ratings, Kim's performance was praised, and she received a Top Excellence Award at the KBS Drama Awards.
In 2009, she was cast in a small supporting role (or extended cameo) as the hero's tough-but-stylish older sister in Boys Over Flowers, an adaptation of the Japanese manga Hana Yori Dango. Kim then appeared in the legal drama Partner as a widow-turned-lawyer whose passionate idealism clashed with her colleague's (Lee Dong-wook) cool cynicism.
Kim then spent ten days in Vancouver, Whistler, and Victoria filming Kim Hyun-documentary joo's ECO Canada, which aired on MBC Life. The shoot, which was also featured as a photo spread in Sure magazine, promoted environmental awareness by emphasising Canada's natural backdrops and demonstrating Kim's environmentally friendly practises such as using fabric bags instead of plastic and unplugging unused electrical appliances.
Hyun-Handcrafted joo's Story, a collection of personal essays and photographs about her needlework and knitting, was released on December 20, 2009.
Kim had a difficult year in 2010, as three of her loved ones committed suicide in quick succession: her friend, actor Park Yong-ha, committed suicide on June 30, the production company executive who'd cast her in The Land committed suicide on July 1 due to financial difficulties, and her father, Kim Tae-beom, died on July 7 after a long illness. She spent the rest of the year volunteering as a goodwill ambassador for Good Neighbors, a humanitarian NGO, in Bangladesh and the Philippines. She gave the money she received in condolences for her father's funeral and a portion of her book sales to Good Neighbors, which was used to build libraries in 11 orphanages in Dhaka's slum areas. Kim stated, "After a series of personal tragedies, I literally fled to Bangladesh, but the smiles of children living in these deplorable conditions consoled me. Sharing has given me the strength to live." She is currently an instructor for several Good Neighbors classes, teaching Korean elementary schoolchildren about poverty around the world.
From 2011 to 2015, I concentrated on weekend dramas.
Kim returned to the stage in 2011, playing the daughter of a wealthy publishing family whose life is turned upside down when she discovers she was switched at birth with another baby in Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Her performance earned her the MBC Drama Awards' Top Excellence Award. She also appeared in Kim Dae-short seung's film Q&A, which was included in the omnibus film If You Were Me 5, commissioned by Korea's National Human Rights Commission. She then starred in Dummy Mommy (2012) as a fashion magazine editor with a genius IQ who is embarrassed by her developmentally disabled mother (Ha Hee-ra).
In a departure from her usual roles, Kim portrayed Lady Jo (or Jo Gwi-in), one of the Joseon Dynasty's legendary femme fatales, in the period drama Blooded Palace: The War of Flowers (2013). She stated that she was "more than delighted to have been given the opportunity to try something new," adding that, "This role will be a new life story for my acting career. Personally, I believe it would be more interesting for an actress with a more innocent image, such as myself, to take on this wicked role." Critics praised Kim's versatility as Lady Jo evolves from a naive young girl into an ambitious royal concubine who uses her beauty and cunning on King Injo in her thirst for power.
Kim debuted Musical Journey to Yesterday in early 2014, a music programme in which a mix of current idol singers and industry veterans perform live hit songs from the 1970s to the 1990s. Later that year, she appeared in the weekend drama What Happens to My Family?, which drew more than 40% of the audience. Her performance received the KBS Drama Awards' Top Excellence award.
She had a dual role in the 2015 melodrama I Have a Lover. She received the APAN Star Awards and SBS Drama Awards' Top Excellence Top Excellence Award.
2016-present: Professional advancement

In 2018, she played a tired wife trapped in a loveless marriage in the fantasy melodrama Miracle That We Met. Kim described her character Sun Hye-jin as "a dormant volcano waiting to be active".
Kim appeared in the OCN drama Watcher in 2019. She portrayed a former elite and promising prosecutor in the role of a criminal lawyer. Kim's performance earned rave review that she "created an independent and unique character that has never been seen before".
Kim was set to star in Undercover, a JTBC remake of the British BBC drama of the same name, in July 2020. Ji Jin-hee, her co-star from the 2015 drama I Have a Lover, appeared in the drama for the third time. Kim explained why she accepted the offer to join the drama: "Ji Jin-hee was very helpful with my character last time. On the contrary, Ji Jin-character hee's Han Jeong-feelings hyeon's need to be expressed more this time. Furthermore, many people want the two of us to reunite after I Have a Lover, so I want to reciprocate that love."
Kim was confirmed to join the cast of Hellbound, a Netflix series directed by Yeon Sang-ho, in the same month of 2020. She portrayed Min Hye-jin, an attorney who opposes religious extremists.
Netflix confirmed the production of its upcoming thrilling drama The Bequeathed in October 2022, with Kim playing one of the lead roles. Kim appeared in the SBS drama Trolley in December 2022, playing the wife of a National Assembly member.
