Biography
Personal and professional lives
Kitagawa was born in Hygo Prefecture, Japan, on August 22, 1986. She grew up in Kobe and had many friends who were killed in the Great Hanshin earthquake in 1995. She wanted to be a doctor as a child, but by high school, she was unsure of what she wanted to do with her life. Around this time, she was noticed by a talent agency and decided to try her hand in the entertainment industry. Her parents were initially opposed, but they agreed under two conditions: she give up if she didn't make any progress within a year, and she prioritize her academics and graduate from university. In March 2009, she graduated from Meiji University in Tokyo.
Kitagawa was chosen as a model and actor within a week of joining an agency. She was chosen as Miss Seventeen in 2003, which led to her appearing as a model for the Japanese Seventeen magazine until September 2006. She had her own regular feature, "Keiko's Beauty Honey," towards the end of the run.
Kitagawa's acting career began when she was cast in the role of Rei Hino in the live-action television series Sailor Moon. Her first big film role was in Mamiya Kydai, and because of the director's influence, Yoshimitsu Morita, she opted to focus on acting rather than modeling. She began her career in cinema, playing key roles in Cherry Pie and Dear Friends. She had her first leading part in a TV drama in late 2007, in the late-night drama Mop Girl. In 2008, she was cast as the heroine in Homeroom on the Beachside, Fuji Television's Monday 9pm summer drama.
Kitagawa relocated to Tokyo when she began working as an actress and model, and she has remained there ever since. She went to California to film The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift and then returned to learn English for a few months in early 2006. She published a column called "Keytan Hakusho" for the Japanese weekly television listings magazine Weekly The Television from May to December 2007.
Kitagawa describes herself as a homebody who enjoys watching DVDs, listening to music, and reading books. When asked what she would do if the world ended tomorrow, she said, "read books." Stardust Promotion is in charge of her management.
She has appeared in the films Mizu ni Sumu Hana (2006), Mamiya Kyōdai (2006), The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006), Cherry Pie (lead role) (2006), Dear Friends (lead role) (2007), Sono Toki ha Kare ni Yoroshiku (2007), Southbound (2007), Heat Island (2007), Handsome Suit (2008), Orion in Midsummer (2009), I'll Pay (2009), After the Flowers (lead role) (2010), and Matataki (lead role) (2010), and Elevator to the Scaffold (2010).
Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (2003–2004), Mop Girl (main part) (2007), Homeroom on the Beachside (2008), Buzzer Beat (2009), and Moon Lovers (2010), The After-Dinner Mysteries (2011), Hero (2014), and Detective against Detectives (2015) were among her television appearances.
Kitagawa married singer-songwriter Daigo in 2016. Kitagawa won the Japanese Television Academy Award for Best Actress for Ie Uru Onna the same year.
She announced her first pregnancy on April 22, 2020. She gave birth to her daughter on September 7.
