When Hashimoto was in third grade, she joined with the Fukuoka-based agency Active Hakata. She began her career in local commercials before joining DVL, her agency's co-ed dance and vocal unit, in 2009; she later joined DVL's all-female successor group Rev. from DVL. She made her stage debut after being cast in Hirokazu Kore-eda's film I Wish. Following that, she appeared in performances by her agency's children's theatre group and plays by a local TV station. In her elementary school yearbook, she stated that her future ambition was to be a "actress."

From 2013 to 2015, she was involved in viral photography, hosting, and acting.

Photo that has gone viral

In 2013, Hashimoto went viral on 2channel and Twitter after a photo of her taken at Rev. from DVL's live performances from November 3 to November 4 went viral. She has been dubbed "beyond cute local idol," "beyond angelic idol," and "a talent appearing once in a millennium," according to a post on "NAVER Summary" titled "Once in a millennium talent: A local idol in Hakata is making a big fuss on the internet when she is too cute (Image of Kanna Hashimoto)." By November 7, the post had received over 550,000 views, and the server for her agency's main website was temporarily offline due to high traffic. "Tsubuyaki Big Data," a segment on NHK's late-night news programme "NEWS WEB" that introduces trends on Twitter and Google Trends, demonstrated that the number of Google searches had increased significantly and had spread to Chinese users. Good! also mentioned the photo. Mezamashi TV (Fuji TV) and Morning (Asahi TV). According to her agency, there was a torrent of proposals from TV commercial appearances and interviews in reaction to her viral photo.

Furthermore, KADOKAWA representative director Shinichiro Inoue, who saw the photo, "fell in love at first sight" and sent an email to his company saying "I want to make a movie with her"; the following weekend, he went to a live performance held at a train station in Fukuoka and, struck by the excitement of the stage, said "I definitely want you to star in my next movie," thus casting her in Sailor Suit and Machine Gun: Graduation;

"I don't know even one millimetre of goodness" of the shot that spurred her epiphany, Hashimoto added. "There was frustration," she recalled, "and maybe I was showing it on my face."

She demonstrated her "bakakakkoii" style in a commercial for cup noodles, which has become a big subject among high school students.
