After finishing fourth in the reality television singing competition Superstar K2 (2010), he rose to prominence. The digital single "Instinctively" became his first number-one single as a solo artist, selling close to 2 million digital copies. On January 12, 2011, he signed with South Korean label YG Entertainment, and he made his solo debut on July 16, 2013 with the digital single "It Rains" ( ), and as the leader of Winner on August 17, 2014.

Kang made his acting debut in the sitcom High Kick: Revenge of the Short Legged (2011). His first lead role, in the web series We Broke Up (2015), earned him his first award in the field, with the K-web Fest Awards naming him "Best Male Actor." His roles in Prison Playbook (2017) and Kairos (2020) solidified his acting career. Kang also appeared on MBC's King of Mask Singer as the "122nd Masked King" under the alias "Chow Yun-fat." He set a record with six consecutive victories, earning him the titles "First 6-Time Idol Champion" and "Youngest Champion" at the time.

Life and work

1994–2009: Early years

Kang Seung-yoon was born on January 21, 1994, in Haeundae District, Busan, South Korea, as a Catholic with the baptismal name Don Bosco and as an only child. Raised by his single mother, his parents divorced during his childhood, and he lost contact with his father, who chose to leave their lives until news of his death was relayed long after his death. His mother ran a business but struggled financially due to the accumulated debt. As a result, her entire profit was allocated to the debt, and she was forced to borrow more money for additional costs, resulting in both additional liabilities and a bad credit rating, and bringing more hardship.

With an IQ of 141, he excelled in mathematics in school; however, in his second year of middle school, he became a victim of bullying by those he considered "friends" and dropped out after developing social anxiety. During this time, he studied classical guitar at an academy and briefly took billiards classes, where he met a man 5-6 years his senior who later helped him with his anxiety. In contrast to his childhood options, which included becoming a politician, a scientist, a comic book writer, or a billiards player - for which he eventually became the regional youth representative and actively played until his freshman year of high school. He passed the GED exam for middle school and enrolled in Busan High School of Arts, where he majored in classical guitar but later considered himself a singer. Kang received his diploma in 2012.

Commercial success and solo debut from 2010 to 2013.

Also consider: K 2 Superstar

17-year-old Kang (Korean age) auditioned for Superstar K2 at the regional preliminary audition (2010). Initially hesitant due to a conflict in perception of using mass media to gain fame versus becoming successful without it, he yielded to his friend's request when asked to audition with him, and so, three months prior to it, he took guitar lessons to further hone his skills. Kang passed the preliminary round with "This Time" by Jonathan Rhys Meyers and finished fourth overall, trailing Huh Gak, John Park, and Jang Jae-in out of over 1,350,000 applicants. In his final stage, he performed Yoon Jong-"Instinctively" shin's (; bonneungjeog-eulo), which received praise from both the judges and the audience. Its digital release propelled Kang to his first number-one single as a solo artist, with sales approaching 2 million digital copies. Its popularity earned him the titles of "Rookie of the Year" at the Gaon Chart Awards and "Rookie of the Month (October)" at the Cyworld Digital Music Awards. YG Entertainment CEO Yang Hyun-suk and Psy invited Kang to a meeting to propose an offer to join them as a trainee. Kang joined them on January 12, 2011 and started training on March 9. He elaborated: "There have been numerous offers since the end of Superstar K2. Some promised to make me an Asian star, while others offered a large sum of money in exchange for a contract. I chose YG Entertainment because, unlike other agencies, this one evaluated me objectively and treated me as an actual trainee."

Kang was the fourth artist to release the original soundtrack for Midas during his trainee period (2011). "You Are Heaven" (; niga cheongug-ida) peaked at number 11 on the Gaon Digital Chart and topped both real-time and daily South Korean music streaming platforms, including Genie. That same year, he was offered an audition for High Kick: Revenge of the Short Legged (2011), for which hundreds of people queued. Kang, who had no prior acting experience, auditioned in his Busan dialect and later met with the writers. Although he did not fit into any of the existing roles, a new one was created for him on the spur of the moment. Kang co-starred with Lee Jong-suk and Krystal Jung. In relation to the soundtrack, he collaborated with Lee Juck on "Smile, My Love" (; useola geudae), which reached number 79 on the Gaon Digital Chart. The third season of "High Kick" aired from September 19, 2011 to March 29, 2012.

Yang Hyun-suk announced on June 20, 2013, that Kang, 19, would make his solo debut with the digital single "Wild and Young," composed by Teddy Park. On July 15, it was revealed that it had been postponed, and the following day, another digital single in the form of a pre-release entitled "It Rains" (; biga onda) was released. The single achieved a "all-kill," debuting at number one on all South Korean music streaming platforms, including Melon and Mnet, and debuting at number two on the Gaon Digital Chart. His second digital single, "Wild and Young," was released on July 31 with a music video and peaked at number 18 on the Gaon Digital Chart. On August 4, Inkigayo began live promotions for the single. Ten days later, Kang released his third digital single "Stealer" (; mamdodug), along with his second music video, which starred rookie actress Yoon Jin-yi. Promotions were not carried out in order to avoid a disruption in the promotion of "Wild and Young." The Gaon Digital Chart placed "Stealer" thirteenth.

2014-2019: Winner debut and acting projects

Also consider: Winner (band) (band)

Kang appeared as a contestant in the Mnet survival reality show WIN: Who Is Next (2013). The program featured two groups of male trainees from YG Entertainment (A and B) competing for the chance to make their debut by the end of the series after a 100-day journey. According to the label, Kang was assigned to "Team A" alongside Kim Jin-woo, Lee Seung-hoon, Song Min-ho, and Nam Tae-hyun. He temporarily replaced Song as its leader in the seventh episode of the television broadcast after sustaining an ankle injury. Through the appointment of Yang Hyun-suk as its eventual permanent leader, he witnessed growth. On October 25, "Team A" was revealed as the series' winners, and they would then begin preparations for their debut as Winner. On August 17, 2014, Kang made his official debut with the five-piece band Winner. The band's debut success was described as "unprecedented" by media outlets, as they had made their mark in the industry so early in their career. Kang also collaborated with Song on Superstar K2 judge panelist Yoon Jong-Monthly shin's project for the digital single "Wild Boy."

With the web drama We Broke Up, the singer-turned-thespian returned to acting after his last project, High Kick: Revenge of the Short Legged (2011). (2015). He played the male lead, with labelmate Sandara Park playing the female lead. The series aired on Naver TV from June 29, 2015 to July 17, 2015, and achieved success by becoming the fourth most watched web drama on the platform that year, with 11.45 million views and 16 million views combined as of October 2015. The series was the first Korean web drama to be invited to the Geneva International Film Festival in Switzerland. Because of the positive response, the main cast decided to hold a surprise "mini-concert" in Seoul for only 200 people. His performance in the series earned him the K Web Fest Awards' award for "Best Male Actor." In his second web drama, Love for a Thousand More (2016), he played the male lead opposite actress Hwang Seung-eon. The series starred bandmate Kim Jin-woo and was co-produced by CJ E&M, YG Entertainment, and YG KPlus. While not as popular as his previous project, the series had over 5 million views as of December 2016 and was considered a success. Kang released a soundtrack for the drama titled "You" (; neo), which served as the drama's sole release.

He continued his acting career by appearing in Prison Playbook (2017–2018). He was cast in a supporting role after an audition in which he had to read a portion of the script in his native dialect on the spot. Shin Won-ho, the series' director, revealed that while he did not have high expectations because it had been a long time since he was seen in 'High Kick,' he found his portrayal enjoyable and believed he brought the character to life. " [...] my generation doesn't really know him as a Winner [member] [...] I didn't have any bias because of the group he was in, he just fit well with us," Shin explained. The series also served as an on-screen reunion for him and Krystal, who had been separated for five years and six months in High Kick: Revenge of the Short Legged (2011–2012). Kang and his bandmate Mino released the soundtrack "Door" (; mun). In 2018, he provided the voice for the Korean film Golden Slumber (2018) and its eponymous soundtrack, which was originally recorded by The Beatles. Paul McCartney was paid $200,000 for its use, the most for a Korean film.

King of Mask Singer and first full-length album, 2020-present

Kang was invited for the second time to the MBC singing competition program, King of Mask Singer, in March 2020, and subsequently won, earning the title of "122nd Mask King" during his appearance as "Chow Yun-fat" after defeating South Korean singer, So Chan-whee. He won six straight times and was dubbed "The First 6-Time Idol Champion" and "The Youngest Champion" at the time. "Chow Yun-fat" was credited with a 10% increase in viewership ratings since his first stage. His appearance maintained double digit ratings, propelling the show to the top of its time slot for five weeks in a row. Kang's performances were number one and two on the Naver TV Top 100 Popular Video Chart every week, while his alias topped real-time on search portal site Naver for the entire 14-week reign, creating a buzz.

Kang made his acting debut three years after Prison Playbook (2017-2018) with Kairos (2020). He joined the main cast as "Im Gun-wook" and frequently appeared alongside Lee Se-young and Lee Joo-myung. His persona earned him a nomination for "Best New Actor" at the 2020 MBC Drama Awards. He appeared in the fourth season of Voice (2021), a thriller-procedural show, as "Han Woo-joo," a 4D patrol officer who was specially recruited for the cyber team. He sang the soundtracks "Can You Hear Me" and "Your Voice" for both projects at the request of the series'.

Kang released his first full-length album, Page, on March 29, 2021, ten years into his musical career, with the lead single "Iyah" (; aiya). The album debuted at number three on the Gaon Album Chart and had sold 122,202 copies as of April 2021 in South Korea. Within the first week of its release on YouTube, the title received 10 million views. Kang held his first solo concert, titled "Passage," in conjunction with it on November 21, 2021. The event was held both in person at Olympic Hall in Seoul and online as part of "YG Palm Stage 2021," while adhering to COVID-19 guidelines and limits. On March 14, 2022, he released his fourth digital single and music video, "Born to Love You."

Kang Seungyoon in the year 2021

Since King of Mask Singer, Immortal Songs: Singing the Legend, a KBS2 singing competition program, had sought Kang to appear on the show; however, he declined their invitations due to his unavailability, until he was asked to compete on the "Lee Juck Special," which he accepted with Lee personally scouting its participants. Kang won the competition against veteran artists Forte di Quattro, Kwak Jin-eon, Choi Jung-in, and Jung Dong-ha by performing "Rain" by Lee Juck in the latter half. His victory earned him the opportunity to compete in the show's "King of Kings Special," where he performed "Around 30" (; seoleun jeueum-e) by Kim Kwang-seok while competing with the flu against singers Lee Eun-mi and Seodo Band, Lee Young-hyun and Park Min-hye of Big Mama, La Poem, and Forestella. In July 2022, it received a rating of 7.7% nationwide and 8.0% in the metropolitan area, placing it first among all entertainment programs on Saturdays and in its time slot.

Private life

Kang experienced symptoms of a spinal disc herniation while on stand-by for rehearsals at Inkigayo on June 2, 2019, while promoting the lead single, "Ah Yeah" (; aye). He was taken to a nearby hospital's emergency room for examination and treatment for the aforementioned diagnosis. He was discharged three days later after finishing his treatment and was told to rest; however, Kang chose to participate in scheduled activities to minimize any burden on his band as a result of his absence.

Musicality and songwriting are examples of artistry.

"Because I was always playing the guitar at work, Yang Hyun-suk asked, 'Kang Seung Yoon, how come whenever you write a song, it's always '7080'? [...] I had the idea that I shouldn't touch the guitar while Winner was making music. [...] It's because the path Winner is taking is a little different." in Kang Seung-yoon Knowing Brothers

Kang has been a registered associate member of the Korea Music Copyright Association since then, and he was one of twenty-five people, along with bandmate Mino, to be promoted to the status of "full member" in January 2021. Maintaining an associate membership for three years or more, receiving a "certain amount" in royalties from copyrighted property each year, and being selected by the board of directors are all requirements for the promotion. They also have the right to vote at general meetings.

Kang revealed that he was born with weak vocal cords that, if not kept in check, can cause him to lose his voice for a week. His ENT doctor, on the other hand, stated that despite his condition, he is capable of producing sounds that do not harm or affect him.

Influence

Kang's main inspiration for photography is Henri Cartier-Bresson, whom he refers to as the "master of black and white photography," his favorite medium.

Public perception

Kang rose to prominence at the age of 16 after competing in Superstar K2. He was often referred to as a "rocker kid" because of his powerful baritone voice and use of the guitar.

Within South Korea, Rubin of 1Team stated Kang as his role model and inspiration for music since the day he saw Michael Jackson's performance of "Black or White" on Superstar K2 while traveling to an academy. Changbin of Stray Kids cited him as an inspiration since his appearance on an audition program, and he also wanted to collaborate with him on a "emotional hip hop" single. Kim Hee-sun, a veteran South Korean actress, also expressed her admiration for Kang's voice and his band.

Other business ventures

Photographs and endorsements

Kang has been an endorsement model for LG U+ and its International Call 002 range since 2010, CJ Group and its new six-year corporate campaign, "Different ideas that change the world," with Superstar K2 contestants Huh Gak, John Park, Jang Jae-in, and YG Family artists Big Bang, 2NE1 and Psy, as well as the Samsung Galaxy Tab. In the years since, he has endorsed Grand Chase by KOG Studios, Team Polham by Asian Fashion, Fanta by Lee Kwang-soo and Baek Jin-hee, Yogiyo by Cha Seung-won, Choi Ji-woo, Yoo In-na, and AKMU, and J.One Cosmetics.

Kang, 27, first exhibited his work at the Saatchi Gallery in West London as part of StART, an international contemporary art fair, under the alias "Yooyeon," a persona exclusive to photography that translates to "flexible" from Korean in correlation to his mindset. He displayed black and white photographs from various trips.

Kang announced in March 2023 that his first solo photography exhibition, Sky Roof, would take place from March 23 to April 19.

Philanthropy

During the "Ice Bucket Challenge," which was started by senior label-mate Sean of Jinusean in South Korea in 2018, Sean revealed that, in addition to Kang's previous participation and donation, he had quietly donated an additional $30 million to the Seungil Hope Foundation.

Following the cancellation of PLAC's 'by YOU' collection in collaboration with Seungyoon and bandmate Mino's showcase event on February 28, 2020, due to safety concerns related to the recent coronavirus pandemic, the funds raised for the showcase were used to donate 10,000 masks to low-income children.

Kang took part in the recording of an audio guide for an exhibition titled "Wonderworld Maps: Connecting Longingness Beyond the Horizon" at the Korea National Maritime Museum in Busan in December 2021. It was designed to allow people with low vision to enjoy the exhibition while listening to the explanations of each piece. Kang donated his entire earnings from recording the audio guide to fund the education of children from Siloam Center for the Blind families.

Kang donated $50 million to the Hope Bridge Korea Disaster Relief Association on August 11, 2022, to assist those affected by the 2022 South Korean floods.
