Barden was born on July 21, 1992, in Northallerton, North Yorkshire. She is from a working-class family. Her father works in a prison, and her mother is an accountant; she has two brothers. Her family relocated to Wetherby, West Yorkshire, when she was three years old. Wetherby High School was where Barden went to school. She became interested in acting through school and her father's love of movies. She began taking drama classes and working as a television extra at a local drama club. She dropped out of school when she was 15 years old.
Barden made her acting debut in 1999, playing a minor role in an episode of the CITV series My Parents Are Aliens. She went on to appear in episodes of the shows No Angels and The Chase.
Barden was 14 years old when she joined the cast of the ITV soap opera Coronation Street, where she played Kayleigh Morton from March 2007 until the Morton family left the show in September 2008. Barden made her film debut in Mrs Ratcliffe's Revolution, a comedy-drama released in 2007. In 2009, she played Pea in the stage production Jerusalem at London's Royal Court Theatre, which later transferred to the West End's Apollo Theatre.
Tamara Drewe, a dramatisation of the comic strip of the same name, was released in 2010, and Barden was nominated for Young British Performer of the Year by the London Film Critics' Circle. She played Sophie in Joe Wright's Hanna the following year. She appeared in the horror Comedown, the mystery-drama In the Dark Half, the psychological thriller Mindscape, and the indie Lullaby from 2012 to 2014.
Screen International named Barden a Star of Tomorrow in 2015. That year, she starred as Kit Carmichael in a two-part BBC One adaptation of Sadie Jones' debut novel The Outcast and as Liddy in a film adaptation of Thomas Hardy's Far from the Madding Crowd. In 2016, Barden starred as Ellen in the Channel 4 television film Ellen, as Jasmine in the comedy film Mindhorn, and as Justine in the third series of Penny Dreadful on Sky Atlantic. In a 2023 interview with The Daily Telegraph, Barden expressed her disdain for "working class tourism" in acting, naming non-binary actor Emma Corrin and pledging to only play working-class women from Yorkshire.
