Jenna-Louise Coleman (born April 27, 1986), better known as Jenna Coleman, is an English actress. She is best known for her roles as Jasmine Thomas in Emmerdale, Clara Oswald in Doctor Who, Queen Victoria in the period drama Victoria, Joanna Lindsay in the crime miniseries The Cry, and Marie-Andrée Leclerc in the crime miniseries The Serpent. She has also appeared in a number of films, including Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) and Me Before You (2012). (2016). She played Johanna Constantine in the Netflix fantasy drama series The Sandman in 2022.

Early years

Jenna-Louise Coleman, the daughter of Karen and Keith Coleman, was born on April 27, 1986 in Blackpool. Her father is a joiner and interior fitter for bars and restaurants. Her older brother, Ben, is also a joiner. Coleman is descended from English, Scottish, Welsh, and Irish ancestors. Her grandmother named her Jenna Wade from the American television series Dallas. She went to Arnold School in Blackpool and was the head girl. She was a member of the theatre company In Yer Space while in high school, and she performed in the play Crystal Clear at the Edinburgh Festival. She received an award for her performance, and the play was well received. She was offered a place to study English at the University of York, but she declined in order to take on the role of Jasmine Thomas in Emmerdale.

Career from 2005 to 2012:

Coleman was born in November of 2013.

Coleman was cast as Jasmine Thomas in Emmerdale in 2005. She was nominated for the "Best Newcomer" award at the British Soap Awards in 2007, and the "Most Popular Newcomer" award at the National Television Awards in 2006. She was nominated for "Best Actress," "Sexiest Female," and "Best Dramatic Performance" at the 2009 British Soap Awards. She was nominated for the TV Choice Awards' "Best Actress" award. Coleman was cast as "hard girl" Lindsay James in the BBC school-based drama series Waterloo Road in May 2009. Coleman found the experience of playing a schoolgirl "surreal" because she was 23 at the time of her casting.

Coleman spent time in the United States after Waterloo Road auditioning for roles, making it to the finals for a sitcom pilot in 2011 that she had to back out of in order to take a role in Titanic (see below).

Coleman was cast as Susan Brown in a BBC Four television adaptation of John Braine's novel Room at the Top in December 2010. The adaptation was supposed to premiere in April 2011, but it was postponed due to a rights dispute between the production company and Braine's estate. The dispute was settled by 2012, and the show aired in two parts on September 26 and 27, 2012. She made her feature film debut in Captain America: The First Avenger in 2011. She also got the role of Annie Desmond in Julian Fellowes' four part mini-series Titanic, describing her character as a "cheeky little Cockney" and "the Eliza Doolittle of the ship".

In the film adaptation of Death Comes to Pemberley, she played Lydia Wickham. The three episodes aired on BBC One during the Christmas season of 2013.
Coleman was cast as Rosie in Stephen Poliakoff's original drama series Dancing on the Edge in 2012, which follows the fortunes of a 1930s black jazz band. In February 2013, the show aired on BBC Two.

2012-2017: Doctor Who

At a press conference on March 21, 2012, Doctor Who producer Steven Moffat confirmed that Coleman would play the Eleventh Doctor's companion (Matt Smith). Moffat cast her in the role because she worked well with Smith and could speak faster than he could. She auditioned for the role under the guise of auditioning for Men on Waves (an anagram for "Woman Seven": she would make her first appearance in the show's seventh season).

Coleman was born in July of 2015.

Coleman made a surprise appearance as Oswin Oswald, a guest character, in the first episode of the seventh series on 1 September 2012, despite having been announced to begin her run as companion in the Christmas special in 2012. Coleman made her series regular debut in the Christmas special episode "The Snowmen" as Victorian governess and barmaid Clara Oswin Oswald. Coleman also played a third version of the character in that episode, a twenty-first-century Londoner named Clara Oswald. This version begins her travels as the Doctor's regular companion in "The Bells of Saint John," including after his regeneration into the Twelfth Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi, in the 2013 Christmas special episode "The Time of the Doctor." Coleman was cast as Clara in the 2014 Christmas special episode "Last Christmas," and it was revealed that she would return for Series 9. Coleman, on the other hand, decided to leave the show after the ninth series to play Queen Victoria in an ITV production.

She returned to the show for the Twelfth Doctor's final episode, "Twice Upon a Time," making a cameo appearance; that episode, Doctor Who's 2017 Christmas special, aired the same evening as Victoria's first Christmas special. She made her screen debut as Jenna Coleman in Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor, which aired on August 4, 2013.
2015–present: The Sandman, Victoria, The Cry, and The Serpent

In 2017, Jenna Coleman

Coleman was cast in ITV's eight-part drama about the reign of Queen Victoria, the British monarch and Empress of India, in 2015. The actress admitted that she was not well-versed in Victorian history, but she did research for the role. Coleman expressed her admiration for the monarch during an interview with BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour. She claimed that by taking on this role, she was able to break free from the "box" that Emmerdale had placed her in as a northern working-class character. Victoria premiered on ITV on August 28, 2016, and was renewed for a second season in September 2016. A Christmas special was also commissioned for 2017, and a third season was announced in December 2017.

Coleman was hired as the narrator for a Royal Caribbean UK advertising campaign in 2017. Coleman was cast as Joanna in the four-part BBC drama The Cry, based on Helen FitzGerald's 2013 novel of the same name, on January 8, 2018.

Coleman played Annie in the Old Vic Theatre's production of All My Sons in 2019, which ran from April 13 to June 8 and included a cinema screening via National Theatre Live on May 14. Coleman was announced in February 2019 to make a guest appearance in an episode from series five of the dark comedy series Inside No. 9, with a broadcast date later that year. The fifth season premiered on 3 February 2020.

Coleman confirmed her intention to return to Victoria for a fourth series in an interview with Graham Norton on BBC Radio 2 on 11 May 2019, but stated that the show will take "a bit of a breather" before production resumes. Coleman was cast in the role of Marie-Andrée Leclerc in the Netflix and BBC drama The Serpent, which is based on the life of convicted serial killer Charles Sobhraj. The Serpent production began in Bangkok in September 2019 and will continue into 2020, with a BBC broadcast later that year. Work on The Serpent, like most other film and television productions, was halted in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Filming in the United Kingdom resumed on August 17 and was completed on August 28. The Serpent's broadcast date has been pushed back to 2021 due to a filming delay. It premiered on BBC One on January 1, 2021.

During the pandemic, Coleman took part in The Remote Read, a planned series of online drama performances to raise funds for pandemic-affected theatrical workers. On May 2, 2020, the first production under this banner, an adaptation of Tom Stoppard's A Separate Peace (1966), was broadcast via the Zoom videoconferencing platform. Coleman also recorded the short story Pressures, Residential by Philip Hensher in support of UNICEF UK, as well as The Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies by Beatrix Potter as part of Beatrix Potter: The Complete Tales, a collection of audiobooks.

Coleman reprised her role as Princess Melia Antiqua in the video game Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition, which features a brand new epilogue set after the main story, nine years after its original English release. She then reappeared as Melia in Xenoblade Chronicles 3 in 2022, as Queen of the Keves Nation.

Coleman was the creative director for Boots UK's "Bags of Joy" Christmas ad campaign in 2021. Joy, her character, is shown giving Christmas gifts to friends and family from a bag that is larger on the inside.

Coleman was cast as Johanna Constantine, John Constantine's great-great-great-grandmother, in DC Comics' The Sandman TV series in May 2021. The series premiered on Netflix in August 2022, with Coleman playing two roles in the film: the aforementioned Johanna and her modern-day descendant of the same name. This new interpretation prompted requests for a spin-off series. Although no such project has been announced as of late 2022, Coleman is expected to reprise the role in the second season of the series.

Coleman returned to the West End stage in January 2023, co-starring with Aidan Turner in a revival of Sam Steiner's 2015 play, Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons, which began with a nine-week run at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London, followed by runs in Manchester and Brighton until April 2023.

Projects in the works

Coleman was cast in the dark comedy Klokkenluider in February 2021. The three-week shoot in a COVID-secure "bubble" began on February 28 in East Sussex. The film will make its public debut on October 8, 2022, at the 2022 London Film Festival.

It was later announced that she had been cast as Joan Bright and would be the executive producer of the historical drama series The War Rooms, which will tell the story of the women who worked in Winston Churchill's secret Whitehall bunker during WWII and inspired Ian Fleming to create the character of Miss Moneypenny in his James Bond novels. No further announcements about this proposed series had been made as of September 2022, though Coleman stated during convention appearances in the fall of 2022 that it was still in pre-production.

Coleman was cast as Liv Taylor in the Amazon prime thriller Wilderness, based on B.E. Jones' novel of the same name, in June 2022, with filming set to begin in British Columbia in early summer 2022.

Coleman filmed a role in Jamie Childs' film Jackdaw just before Christmas 2022; despite widespread speculation on social media, Coleman did not confirm her involvement until an interview published in late January 2023.

Volunteer work

Coleman has worked with One To One Children's Fund, for which she is an ambassador, to raise HIV awareness in South Africa. She is also a Place2Be ambassador, a charity that provides emotional and therapeutic services in schools. Coleman has also been a consistent supporter of Comic Relief and Red Nose Day.
