Yoona is a South Korean singer and actress born Im Yoon-ah (Korean: ; born May 30, 1990). After five years of training, she made her debut in August 2007 as a member of the girl group Girls' Generation (and later its subgroup Girls' Generation-Oh!GG), which went on to become one of South Korea's best-selling artists and one of the world's most popular girl groups. Yoona has also appeared in several television dramas, most notably You Are My Destiny (2008), which marked her career breakthrough and earned her Best New Actress awards at the 23rd KBS Drama Awards and the 45th Baeksang Arts Awards.
Yoona has since gained additional public attention and acting acclaim for her roles in Love Rain (2012), Prime Minister & I (2013), The K2 (2016), The King in Love (2017), Hush (2020-21), and Big Mouth (2022). Confidential Assignment (2017), Exit (2019), her first leading role, and Confidential Assignment 2 (2022) are among her most successful films in South Korea.

Life and work
1990–2007: Beginnings in life and in a career

Yoona was born on May 30, 1990 in Seoul's Yeongdeungpo-gu. Her family consists of her father and a five-year-old older sister.
She won the SM Saturday Open Casting Audition in 2002 and spent the next five years "doing nothing but constant training" in singing, dancing, and acting. Yoona was introduced to the public through various appearances in music videos and commercials prior to her debut; she first appeared in TVXQ's "Magic Castle" music video in December 2004. In August 2007, she made her official debut as a member of Girls' Generation, becoming the "centre" of the group.

Yoona has appeared in a number of television dramas in addition to her work with Girls' Generation. Her acting career began in 2007 when she appeared in the MBC drama Two Outs in the Ninth Inning. Yoona co-starred in KBS2's romantic comedy drama Prime Minister & I with Lee Beom-soo in December 2013. Yoona played Nam Da-jung, a young and stubborn reporter who falls in love with the prime minister in a film loosely based on the musical film The Sound of Music. The drama received low ratings, but Yoona's performance was praised, and she received an Excellence Award for the role at the 2013 KBS Drama Awards.
Yoona released her first solo single "Deoksugung Stonewall Walkway," a collaboration with South Korean indie group 10cm, as part of SM Station in March 2016. Yoona was cast in her debut Chinese drama God of War, Zhao Yun, based on the Chinese novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, in April 2016. She played two characters: one who falls in love with the male lead character but later discovers he murdered her father, and the other who is skilled in martial arts. The drama's viewership ratings peaked at more than 2%, which was deemed "a huge success" in comparison to China's large population. Transitional roles and solo debut from 2016 to the present
Yoona appeared in tvN's action thriller The K2 in September 2016. Yoona cast aside public perception and focused on the role as her "personal challenge" after becoming tired of being typecast with a candy-like image and having always been burdened by the idol-actress prejudice. Yoona made her film debut in the action film Confidential Assignment in January 2017. She then starred in MBC's historical drama The King in Love, based on Kim Yi-novel ryung's of the same name. Yoona joined the second season of Hyori's Homestay as a new helper in 2018. At the end of the variety show, she released "To You," her third solo single. Oh!GG, a Girls' Generation subgroup, was formed in August 2018 with Yoona and the four other members who had decided to renew their contracts with SM Entertainment; the group released the single "Lil' Touch" that month.
Yoona's debut extended play A Walk to Remember was released on May 30, 2019, to commemorate her 29th birthday. In its first 24 hours, the EP became the fastest-selling album by a female soloist. Yoona co-starred in the disaster action film Exit with Jo Jung-suk in July of the same year. With over nine million viewers, it became the most popular film of the summer and one of the highest-grossing films in South Korea. Yoona returned to the small screen at the end of 2020 in JTBC's office drama Hush, where she played an intern reporter. Yoona appeared in Lee Jang-romantic hoon's drama film Miracle: Letters to the President in 2021, as well as Kwak Jae-romantic yong's comedy film A Year-End Medley. She received her second Blue Dragon Best Actress nomination and her first Baeksang Best Actress nomination for the former.
She was cast as Lee Jong Suk's wife in the TV series Big Mouth in 2022. She also reprised her role in the action-comedy sequel, Confidential Assignment 2: International, which, like its predecessor, became one of South Korea's highest-grossing films. She received praise for both performances, with the latter earning her the 58th Grand Bell Awards' Best Supporting Actress award.

Yoona has been dubbed a "CF Queen" as a result of her numerous television commercial films and work as a brand spokesperson. CNN called her "one of the household names in the Asia-Pacific region," crediting her with helping Korean beauty brands gain traction in China. She was the first idol to endorse S-Oil, a large South Korean petroleum and refinery company, in 2010. She appeared in at least 20 commercials in 2012, and TVCF, South Korea's largest advertisement information site, ranked her fifth among celebrities with the most commercial appearances. In 2013, she became Alcon Taiwan's first overseas endorser. Yoona was a long-term spokesperson for Amore Pacific's cosmetics brand Innisfree from 2009 to 2020. Other notable endorsements include Michael Kors, for which she became the brand's first ambassador in Korea, Estée Lauder, Danish jewellery brand Pandora, South Korean insurance DB Insurance, Tous Les Jours, Crocs, and Lee Jeans. Ambassadorship
Yoona was named Honorary Ambassador of Jung-gu, Seoul, in 2012. Yoona was named an ambassador for UNICEF's "UNIHERO" campaign in 2014, which encourages people to become heroes for less fortunate children all over the world. Yoona was named a National Tax Service promotional ambassador in 2015. She has also received presidential recognition for paying her taxes on time. Yoona was one of the global ambassadors for Crocs' "Come As You Are" campaign in 2016. Beginning in September 2019, an advertising campaign called 'Imagine Your Korea' was launched to raise awareness of Korean tourism and attract more foreign visitors. The advertisements were shown in China, Japan, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Malaysia. They will also be displayed every day in Times Square until January 2021.
