Yoona was born on May 30, 1990 in Seoul's Yeongdeungpo-gu. Her family consists of her father and a five-year-old older sister.

She won the SM Saturday Open Casting Audition in 2002 and spent the next five years "doing nothing but constant training" in singing, dancing, and acting. Yoona was introduced to the public through various appearances in music videos and commercials prior to her debut; she first appeared in TVXQ's "Magic Castle" music video in December 2004. In August 2007, she made her official debut as a member of Girls' Generation, becoming the "centre" of the group.

From 2008 to 2016, I worked as an actor.

Yoona has appeared in a number of television dramas in addition to her work with Girls' Generation. Her acting career began in 2007 when she appeared in the MBC drama Two Outs in the Ninth Inning. She later appeared in MBC's Woman of Matchless Beauty (2008), where veteran actress Bae Jong-ok praised her cameo performance.

Yoona landed her first leading role as Jang Sae-byuk in KBS's drama You Are My Destiny in May 2008. Yoona received wider public recognition after the drama received viewer ratings of up to 41.5%. She saw the role as a watershed moment in her career, and she went on to win two "Best New Actress" awards at the 2008 KBS Drama Awards and the 45th Baeksang Arts Awards. Yoona co-starred in MBC's Cinderella Man with Kwon Sang-woo in 2009.

Yoona was cast in a lead role alongside Jang Geun Suk in KBS2's drama Love Rain in March 2012. Love Rain is a fantasy drama about fate in which the offspring of an ill-fated couple who met in the 1970s meet and fall in love with each other in the modern era. Yoona portrayed two characters: Yun-hee from the 1970s and Ha-na from today. Despite the drama's low domestic viewership and criticism for failing to connect with viewers, Yoona's performance received positive feedback. OSEN's Yoon Ga-ee wrote: "Her acting skills are improving at an alarming rate. She's grown to the point where you wonder, 'When did her acting get so good?' The criticism that followed her during Cinderella Man is no longer there." Hankook Ilbo's Choi In-kyung stated that her acting was constantly improving and that "Yoona is completely immersed in her character and has now become 'Hana' herself." The drama drew strong international interest and was sold to Japan for $10 million, the second highest price for a KBS drama at the time, thanks in part to Yoona's popularity.

Yoona co-starred in KBS2's romantic comedy drama Prime Minister & I with Lee Beom-soo in December 2013. Yoona played Nam Da-jung, a young and stubborn reporter who falls in love with the prime minister in a film loosely based on the musical film The Sound of Music. The drama received low ratings, but Yoona's performance was praised, and she received an Excellence Award for the role at the 2013 KBS Drama Awards.

Yoona released her first solo single "Deoksugung Stonewall Walkway," a collaboration with South Korean indie group 10cm, as part of SM Station in March 2016. On the Gaon Digital Chart, the urban-pop song peaked at number 24. Fuse described it as "breezy and easy-listening," and praised Yoona's "lovely" delivery.

Yoona was cast in her debut Chinese drama God of War, Zhao Yun, based on the Chinese novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, in April 2016. She played two characters: one who falls in love with the male lead character but later discovers he murdered her father, and the other who is skilled in martial arts. The drama's viewership ratings peaked at more than 2%, which was deemed "a huge success" in comparison to China's large population. It also received over 10 billion hits from various online video sites, demonstrating Yoona's popularity in China. Following her success, Yoona released Blossom, a Chinese digital mini-album containing her renditions of well-known Mandarin songs, in August 2016.

Transitional roles and solo debut from 2016 to the present

Yoona appeared in tvN's action thriller The K2 in September 2016. Yoona cast aside public perception and focused on the role as her "personal challenge" after becoming tired of being typecast with a candy-like image and having always been burdened by the idol-actress prejudice. Her efforts received positive feedback from viewers and earned her acting acclaim from critics.
