Han Sun-hwa (born October 6, 1990) is a South Korean singer and actress who goes by the moniker Sunhwa. She was a member of the South Korean girl band Secret. She made her television debut as a finalist on SBS' Superstar Survival in 2004, and she was a regular cast member on the variety show Invincible Youth in 2009. Aside from music, she dabbled in acting, making her screen debut in the 2010 drama More Charming By The Day. She also had supporting roles in Ad Genius Lee Tae-baek, God's Gift - 14 Days, and Marriage, Not Dating.

Early years

Han Sun-hwa was born in Busan, South Korea, on October 6, 1990. Han Seung-woo, her younger brother, and she have one younger sister. Han's mother gave birth to her at the young age of 20. She took care of her younger siblings as the eldest child, cooking for them and tutoring them when both of their parents had to work. Han's family struggled during the East Asian Financial Crisis in 1998, and she recalled that her dream of becoming an entertainer was dimming.

Han had always had an interest in art and aspired to be an artist since she was a child. She participated in after-school art programmes in elementary school and won several awards in various art competitions. However, after seeing one of BoA's television performances, she realised her dream was to sing and dance.

Career s2004–2008: Beginnings and challenges in one's career

Han has since begun auditioning for various record labels; she competed in the S.M. Entertainment Youth Best Competition but was eliminated. Han began auditioning for companies in 2004, in addition to singing competitions. She was a finalist on the talent show Superstar Survival in 2005, alongside 2PM's Taecyeon, Lee Junho, and Chansung. Han received vocal and acting training while on the show, but she was eliminated in the fifth episode and returned to Busan.

Following her setback, Han went back to being an ordinary high school student. However, there was a significant shift in how Han's peers perceived her: false rumours led them to believe she was a JYP trainee; Han admitted she became afraid of people as a result of the jealous stares. Teacher Sung Yong-ho, who was in charge of the school choir, assisted Han by giving her opportunities to compete; she was then admitted to Baekjae Art College. She received a call from an agent who watched Superstar Survival and became a trainee in TS Entertainment a few days before the college entrance ceremony.

Secret, Invincible Youth, acting debut, and rising popularity from 2009 to 2013.

Secret (main article) (South Korean band)

Han debuted in the group Secret in October 2009, alongside Jung Ha-na, Song Ji-eun, and Jun Hyo-seong; prior to their debut, the group was featured in a documentary show called Secret Story, which chronicled their debut process. Han was chosen as a regular cast member of a South Korean variety show called Invincible Youth the same month; the news that a girl group member who hadn't yet debuted would be chosen for a variety programme caused quite a stir.

Secret's debut single "I Want You Back" was released in October 2009. They released their first mini album, Secret Time, in April 2010, which spawned the hit single "Magic," which served as their breakthrough song in South Korea. Han made her acting debut in the sitcom More Charming By The Day the same year. She then appeared in Ad Genius Lee Tae-baek, a workplace drama. On December 28, 2010, Han appeared as Gain's old college friend in MBC's daily sitcom All My Love.

In 2012, for the year-end SBS Gayo Daejeon show, SBS formed four idol super groups. A fan vote placed Han in the Mystic White group, which collaborated with producer Kim Do-hoon to create the song "Mermaid Princess," the proceeds of which were donated to charity.

2014-present: Concentration on acting

Han landed her first lead role in MBC's weekend drama Rosy Lovers in 2014, alongside Lee Jang-woo. Han was named one of the nine rising "it" stars in Korean entertainment by CNN International Seoul, citing her as a "multi-tasking" artist. The same year, she was nominated for "Best Youth Actress" at the 16th Seoul International Youth Film Festival for her performance in the tvN romance drama Marriage, Not Dating. She also won two MBC and SBS Drama Awards for best new actress for her roles in Rosy Lovers and the fantasy thriller God's Gift - 14 Days.

On September 26, 2016, it was confirmed that Han had not renewed her contract with TS Entertainment and would be leaving the company in October. Han joined Huayi Brothers as an actress on October 14, 2016.

Sunhwa appeared in the office comedy series Radiant Office as well as the teen drama School 2017 in 2017. Sunhwa was cast in MBC's weekend drama My Contracted Husband, Mr. Oh in 2018.

Sun-hwa was cast in the romantic-comedy drama Backstreet Rookie, based on a webtoon of the same name, alongside Ji Chang-wook and Kim Yoo-jung in 2020. She portrayed Dae-(Ji hyun's Chang-wook) former girlfriend and Public Relations team leader at the convenience store headquarters. She confirmed her appearance in JTBC's drama Undercover, a remake of the 2016 BBC miniseries of the same name, in July 2020.

Han made a cameo appearance in the SBS drama Why Her in 2022. She later appeared in the solo drama O'PENing - First Snow, alongside Lee Jae-in and Kang Gil-woo.

Musical influences and style

Han has stated that she has been influenced by pop and R&B groups such as Fin.K.L, S.E.S, and Shinhwa since she was a child. Han considers BoA to be one of her biggest influences and idols. She also attributes BoA's singing and dancing to her decision to pursue a musical career.

"I have a somewhat wacky and laid-back personality, and I believe I naturally become the "White Paper" character on set. Even when we were filming, the incorrect answer always came to mind first. Of course, I did it occasionally just for fun."

—Han, speaking about her "White Paper" character.

"White paper," or "baekji" in Korean, is a term coined by netizens and the cast of Invincible Youth that is an English equivalent of Han's "dumb blonde" persona in that show. Because of her dumb blonde persona, she played a significant role in Secret's popularity through Invincible Youth and other variety shows.

Other activities and endorsements

Aside from her work with Secret, she began acting, modelling, and frequently appearing in variety shows. Han won the best wedding dress idol award on MBC's Bouquet in November 2010, landing her a magazine cover feature in Wedding 21's December issue.

Han, along with many other female idols, took part in a skin evaluation by a panel of experts. Finally, the results revealed that Han's skin appeared ten years younger than her actual age. Han was chosen as the model for the cosmetics company The Skin House in April 2011. Han allegedly received a $100,000 down payment for her six-month contract. From 2013 to May 2016, she was the company's sole model.
