Early years
Han Sun-hwa was born in Busan, South Korea, on October 6, 1990. Han Seung-woo, her younger brother, and she have one younger sister. Han's mother gave birth to her at the young age of 20. She took care of her younger siblings as the eldest child, cooking for them and tutoring them when both of their parents had to work. Han's family struggled during the East Asian Financial Crisis in 1998, and she recalled that her dream of becoming an entertainer was dimming.
Han had always had an interest in art and aspired to be an artist since she was a child. She participated in after-school art programmes in elementary school and won several awards in various art competitions. However, after seeing one of BoA's television performances, she realised her dream was to sing and dance.
Career s2004–2008: Beginnings and challenges in one's career
Han has since begun auditioning for various record labels; she competed in the S.M. Entertainment Youth Best Competition but was eliminated. Han began auditioning for companies in 2004, in addition to singing competitions. She was a finalist on the talent show Superstar Survival in 2005, alongside 2PM's Taecyeon, Lee Junho, and Chansung. Han received vocal and acting training while on the show, but she was eliminated in the fifth episode and returned to Busan.
Following her setback, Han went back to being an ordinary high school student. However, there was a significant shift in how Han's peers perceived her: false rumours led them to believe she was a JYP trainee; Han admitted she became afraid of people as a result of the jealous stares. Teacher Sung Yong-ho, who was in charge of the school choir, assisted Han by giving her opportunities to compete; she was then admitted to Baekjae Art College. She received a call from an agent who watched Superstar Survival and became a trainee in TS Entertainment a few days before the college entrance ceremony.

"I have a somewhat wacky and laid-back personality, and I believe I naturally become the "White Paper" character on set. Even when we were filming, the incorrect answer always came to mind first. Of course, I did it occasionally just for fun."
—Han, speaking about her "White Paper" character.
"White paper," or "baekji" in Korean, is a term coined by netizens and the cast of Invincible Youth that is an English equivalent of Han's "dumb blonde" persona in that show. Because of her dumb blonde persona, she played a significant role in Secret's popularity through Invincible Youth and other variety shows.
