Florence Welch: The Indie Rock Queen

Florence Welch, the lead vocalist for indie rock band Florence and the Machine, is a singer-songwriter who has taken the music industry by storm. Born on August 28, 1986, in Camberwell, London, Welch has established herself as a powerhouse in the music industry with her unique and powerful voice, emotionally charged lyrics, and captivating stage presence.

In this article, we will take a deeper look at Florence Welch's life, her family and childhood, her music career, and her accomplishments. We will also explore the qualities that make her an icon in the music industry and how she has managed to stand out in a sea of talented artists.

Family and Childhood

Florence Welch was born to Nick Russell Welch, an advertising executive, and Evelyn Welch (née Samuels), who is the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bristol. Her mother is an American immigrant from New York City who attended Harvard University and the Warburg Institute, University of London. Welch holds dual British and American citizenship through her mother.

Welch's family background is one of creativity and talent. Her maternal uncle, John Stockwell, is an actor and director, while her aunt, Frances Welch, is married to satirist Craig Brown. Welch's grandfather, Colin Welch, was a former deputy editor of The Daily Telegraph and parliamentary sketchwriter for The Daily Mail.

Growing up, Welch was encouraged to pursue her musical talents by her Scottish paternal grandmother, Cybil Welch (née Russell). She used to sing at family weddings and funerals, and her grandmothers inspired numerous songs on Florence and the Machine's debut album, Lungs.

Despite her love for music, Welch was also an academically gifted student, excelling at Alleyn's School in South East London. However, she frequently got into trouble at school for impromptu singing and singing too loudly in the school choir.

Welch studied illustration at Camberwell College of Arts after leaving secondary school and "just bumming around Camberwell where I lived, working at a bar and thinking that I should start doing something with life." She dropped out to focus on her music. Initially, she had intended to take a year out from her studies to "see where the music would go and then it started going somewhere so never went back".

From 2006 to 2010, she worked on Florence and the Machine and Lungs.

The band name "Florence + the Machine" "started off as a private joke that got out of hand," according to Welch. I made music with a friend we called Isabella Machine, and I played Florence Robot. When I was about an hour away from my first gig, I still didn't have a name, so I thought 'Okay, I'll be Florence Robot/Isa Machine', before realising that name was so long it'd drive me mad". Welch's performances in small London venues with Isabella Summers under the moniker Florence Robot/Isa Machine began to gain attention in 2006. Welch collaborated with the band Ashok in 2007, who released the album Plans on the Filthy Lucre/About Records label. This album included the first version of her later hit "Kiss with a Fist," which was titled "Happy Slap" at the time.

On July 6, 2009, Florence and the Machine released their debut studio album Lungs in the United Kingdom. The album was officially launched with a performance at Brockley's Rivoli Ballroom in south-east London. It reached number one in the United Kingdom and number two in Ireland. The album had sold over 100,000 copies in the United Kingdom as of August 6, 2009, and by August 10, it had been at number two for five weeks in a row. Following its digital release on July 25, 2009, the album debuted at number seventeen on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart, eventually peaking at number one. Universal Republic released the album physically in the United States on October 20. James Ford, Paul Epworth, Steve Mackey, and Charlie Hugall produced the album.

Welch sang on David Byrne and Fatboy Slim's 2010 album Here Lies Love, which was inspired by Imelda Marcos. Welch was collaborating with Drake on material for his upcoming album as of January 2011.

Welch replaced pregnant Dido at the 83rd Academy Awards, singing her portion of Best Original Song nominee "If I Rise" (from 127 Hours) with A. R. Rahman.

Ceremonies and solo endeavors in 2011-12

Ceremonials, the band's second studio album, was released on October 31, 2011. Florence's "obsession with drowning" is represented in the album by the use of repeated water imagery. It debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and number six on the Billboard 200 in the United States. Florence and the Machine were nominated for two Brit Awards on January 12, 2012, with the awards ceremony taking place on February 21, 2012, at the O2 Arena in London. The band released "Breath of Life" on April 26, 2012, as the official theme song for the fantasy film Snow White and the Huntsman. Ceremonials' fourth single, a remix of "Spectrum" by Scottish musician Calvin Harris, was released on July 5, 2012, becoming the band's first UK number-one hit. Welch expressed enthusiasm for writing new material for a third album after the band finished touring at the end of September 2012. During the VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul concert in December 2011, Welch led a tribute to Amy Winehouse by performing "Back to Black" and the Annie Lennox classic Walking on Broken Glass. On December 31, 2011, the group performed in Times Square for the 40th annual Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve special.

In October 2012, she was featured on Calvin Harris' song "Sweet Nothing," which debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart, becoming Welch's second number one. Harris' third studio album, 18 Months, features the song as the album's fifth single. "Sweet Nothing" reached number one in Ireland, as well as number two in Australia and New Zealand. In Australia, "Sweet Nothing" was certified Platinum. At the 56th Annual Grammy Awards, "Sweet Nothing" was nominated for Best Dance Recording.

Florence performed "Gimme Shelter" with the Rolling Stones at the O2 Arena in London on November 29, 2012. Her duet with Mick Jagger was dubbed "sexy" and "electrifying."

Collaborations, 2015-21

Florence and the Machine announced their third album, How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful, in February 2015, and it was released on June 1, 2015. The album debuted at number one in a number of countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada. The album spawned two top 40 UK singles and received three Grammy nominations.

Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters broke his leg on stage prior to his band's upcoming Glastonbury Festival headline performance in June 2015, making Florence and the Machine the headline act. On June 26, 2015, they headlined the festival for the first time.

During an interview with Heat Radio in September 2016, American singer Lady Gaga revealed that she and Florence had recorded a song together. The song, titled "Hey Girl," was later included on Gaga's fifth studio album Joanne. Gaga's Netflix documentary Gaga: Five Foot Two included footage from their studio session (2017).

Welch appeared in Terrence Malick's Song to Song in March 2017.

Welch contributed a song titled "To Be Human" to the Wonder Woman soundtrack in May 2017. Sia and Labrinth perform the song, which they co-wrote with Rick Nowels, on the film's soundtrack.

Florence and the Machine released a song titled "Sky Full of Song" and an accompanying music video directed by AG Rojas on YouTube on April 12, 2018. On April 21, the song was released for Record Store Day, which supports physical record stores; a limited edition 7" vinyl was also released. "Hunger" was also released in 2018. High as Hope, Florence and the Machine's fourth studio album, was released on June 29, 2018.

Florence Welch performed a duet with Mick Jagger at London Stadium on May 22, 2018, as part of the Rolling Stones' No Filter Tour. "Wild Horses" was their song.
Welch released her first book, Useless Magic: Lyrics and Poetry, in July 2018. The book includes her lyrics and poetry, as well as artwork from her first album, Lungs, to her 2018 release, High as Hope.

Welch announced on April 28, 2021, that she would contribute music and lyrics to a musical adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, with producer Thomas Bartlett co-writing the music, Martyna Majok writing the book, and Rebecca Frecknall directing.

Dance Fever, 2022-Present

It was confirmed in January 2022 that the band would be headlining a few summer festivals, leading many to speculate that Welch's fifth studio album could be released during the first semester of 2022.

By the end of February, some fans began receiving medieval-styled tarot cards with the words "King" and "Florence + the Machine - Chapter 1" written on them. Welch released a single, "King," and a music video directed by Autumn de Wilde on February 23, 2022.

The second single, "Heaven Is Here," was released on March 7, 2022, along with a music video directed by de Wilde.

On March 9, 2022, Welch announced on her Instagram page that the band's fifth studio album, Dance Fever, would be titled "A fairytale in 14 songs" and would contain 14 songs.

On March 10, 2022, the third single, "My Love," was released, along with a music video directed by Autumn de Wilde. The single was first heard on BBC Radio 1's morning show "Breakfast with Greg James," where Welch appeared as a special guest and announced the release date of their upcoming album Dance Fever, May 13, 2022.

November 18, 2022 In London, he performs barefoot at the O2 arena, leaving a blood trail. "After an X-ray, it appears I was dancing on a broken foot last night," Welch writes on Instagram.

Artistry

Welch has been compared to Kate Bush, Stevie Nicks, Siouxsie Sioux, PJ Harvey, Shirley Manson, Alison Goldfrapp, Tori Amos, and Björk, among others. "When I was writing these songs, I used to refer to myself as Florence 'Robot...because I really like what a machine thinks organic instruments really sound like," Welch said of Lungs. Welch's vocal range is contralto.

Influences

Welch has cited Grace Slick, Alanis Morissette, and Stevie Nicks as influences and "heroes" in interviews. "I'm pretty obsessed with [Stevie] Nicks, from her style to her voice," she told Rolling Stone in 2010. I enjoy watching her old performances on YouTube, as well as the way she moves and everything."

She also cites John Cale, Otis Redding, Siouxsie Sioux, David Byrne, and Lou Reed as early influences. Jody Rosen of Rolling Stone described Florence and the Machine's style as "dark, robust, and romantic," describing the ballad "Only If for a Night" as a mix of "classic soul and midnight-on-the-moors English art rock" in a review of Ceremonials. "We're dealing with all of the same things they did: love and death, time and pain, heaven and hell," Welch explained of her lyrics. Although Welch has stated, "I'm not a religious person," she has used religious imagery in her music and performances. Sex, violence, love, and death are the topics I'm constantly grappling with, and they're all linked back to religion."

Her father, Nick Welch, brought a "rock and roll element to the family mix"; in his twenties, he lived in a West End squat and attended Heathcote Williams' Squatters' Ball, where the 101ers performed frequently. If Nick, a self-described "frustrated performer," "nudged Flo in any way, it's only been to listen to the Ramones rather than Green Day," he said. Evelyn, Welch's mother, had a similar but very different influence on her daughter. Florence was deeply impressed after attending one of her mother's Renaissance lectures as a teenager. "I aspire to something like that, but with music," she explained. I hope that some of the big themes in my music—sex, death, love, violence—will still be part of the human story in 200 years."

Image

Welch is known for her distinct fashion sense, frequently performing concerts in light Gucci gowns, barefoot and without jewellery. Her style was described as bohemian by Vogue, and she was dubbed "the queen of bohemian style."

"For the stage, it's The Lady of Shalott meets Ophelia...mixed with scary gothic bat lady," Welch said of her fashion style. But in real life, I'm a bit prim." Welch frequently combines artistic influences in her fashion and music, with a strong nod to the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood's style. Gucci dressed her for her summer tour and a performance at the Chanel runway show during Paris Fashion Week in 2011. Welch cites the Cockettes, an American drag queen troupe from the 1970s, and French chanson singer Françoise Hardy as fashion influences.

Stevie Nicks, a member of Fleetwood Mac, has also been named as a musical, fashion, and general influence by Welch. In concert, Welch can be seen paying homage to Nicks' famous billowing stage dress.

Welch has spoken about her childhood as a "fantasist," saying, "[I was] constantly reading books, thinking, "I'm not a mermaid. Underwater, I can't breathe. "I am unable to fly." "One of the saddest and most heartbreaking things is that I remember really wanting to be able to magically change my appearance," she said, adding that this had an effect on her image and sound. Her style and demeanour have prompted fans and the media to compare her to a witch, mermaid, and fairy.

Personal life

Welch considers herself an introvert who enjoys reading and literature. Between Two Books, her fan-run book club, has hosted numerous events. "It's a huge generalisation to say that all readers are introverts; I'm sure there are extroverted bookworms out there, but it's nice to know that people with similar interests can actually come together in a social setting and talk about something that is inherently solitary."

Although many of her songs contain Christian themes and elements, Welch has stated that she is not religious. "I went to Catholic school, and the first songs I recall liking were hymns. It's fun to mix the mundane and the magical, the trivial and the grandiose. Combine sex, love, death, marriage, and guilt with gazing at a big sky, going for a walk, or turning the page of a book. Living entails dealing with the mundane and the knowledge that one will die."

Welch has been candid about her struggles with anxiety, depression, and alcohol. Many of her songs address these concerns. She discussed her panic attacks with Sinéad Burke in 2019. "My hands go tingly, my lips go tingly," she explained. I have the impression that it is very serious, that I am about to die, and that I must lie on the floor and breathe... I'm sure I'm having a panic attack. But I also need someone to take me to the hospital."

Welch broke her foot after leaping off the Coachella Festival stage in 2015. "I'm quite shy, really—probably that's why I used to drink a lot," she admitted to Billboard. But I no longer do. I had time to strengthen when I finally took time off to make this new record. And I didn't want to lose that when I was re-entering the fray. I was going to dive-bomb back into it, but look what happened. I jumped in and literally broke myself."

Welch was awarded and accepted an honorary fellowship from the University of the Arts London in 2022.

Political opinions

During the United Kingdom's EU Membership referendum in 2016, Welch expressed her support for Remain. Welch is also a vocal advocate for LGBT rights, and regularly waves the rainbow flag at her concerts, particularly during her song "Spectrum (Say My Name)".

In 2018, she tweeted her support for the repeal of Ireland's Eighth Amendment to the Constitution. The repeal was approved, legalising abortion access in the country.

Welch supported women's rights during concerts in Las Vegas, Nevada, Chicago, Illinois, Raleigh, North Carolina, and Columbia, Maryland in 2019. Instead of purchasing concert merchandise, she encouraged her audience to donate to the ACLU.

Florence expressed her support for Ukraine during the Russian-Ukrainian War in March 2022. The Florence + the Machine video for "Heaven Is Here" was recently shot in Kyiv, Ukraine's capital. "Two of the dancers in this video are currently sheltering," Welch wrote on Twitter. Maryne and Anastasiia, my brave and beautiful sisters. I adore you. I want to wrap my arms around you. Strength." She also shared an article about how to assist Ukraine. The proceeds from a Florence + the Machine zine were donated to the charitable foundation Future for Ukraine in September 2022, according to a tweet. The zine contains photographs taken in Kyiv in November 2021 while filming music videos for Dance Fever.
