Evgeniya Brik (September 3, 1981 - February 10, 2022) was a Russian actress best known for her role as Kalinka in the Belgian television series Matroesjka's.

Life and work

Evgenia Vladimirovna Khirivskaya was born in Moscow on September 3, 1981. She was named after her paternal grandfather, journalist Yevgeny Abramovich Krein. As a stage name, the actress adopted the surname Brik in honor of her paternal great-grandmother Sofia Brik. Despite marriage and taking on a stage persona, she never altered her legal name and thus retained her maiden surname. She is of Polish and Jewish descent.

She successfully finished auditions at the age of 5 and was invited to work as a child model at the All-Union House of Fashion Design. She focused on English throughout elementary and middle school before applying to and graduating from a theater prep school. She is also a classically trained pianist who graduated from a music school.

She received her diploma from the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts in 2004.

Katya, a university Komsomol unit head, was her breakthrough role in Russia in the 2008 musical comedy-drama Stilyagi.

Individual life and death

Brik married filmmaker Valery Todorovsky, with whom she had a daughter, Zoey Valeryevna Todorovskaya, born in Los Angeles in 2009. Zoey made her acting debut in The OA, a Netflix Original series released in 2016. Brik passed away from cancer on February 10, 2022, at the age of 40.
