Esha Gupta (/i pt/; born 28 November 1985) is an Indian actress, model, and the 2007 Miss India International winner. She has made a name for herself in Bollywood films.
Esha Gupta competed in the Femina Miss India pageant in 2007, finishing third and winning the Miss India International title. She later represented India at the Miss International competition. She quickly garnered film offers and made her acting debut in the 2012 commercially successful murder thriller Jannat 2, for which she won a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Female Debut. Gupta garnered positive feedback for her role in the political drama Chakravyuh (2012), but received unfavourable feedback for her performance in the comic film Humshakals (2014). Her most successful films were the horror movie Raaz 3D (2013), the criminal drama Rustom (2016), and Baadshaho (2017).
Early years
Esha Gupta was born in the Indian capital of New Delhi. Her father is a retired Air Force officer, and her mother is a stay-at-home mom. Neha is her sister's name. She grew up mostly in Dehradun, Hyderabad, and Delhi. She graduated from Manipal University's School of Communication with a degree in Mass Communication. She afterwards decided to seek a career in Bollywood instead.
Career
Gupta competed in Femina Miss India in 2007, winning Miss Photogenic and finishing third to advance to Miss India International. In 2010, she was included in the Kingfisher Calendar.
Gupta made her Bollywood debut in Mahesh Bhatt's Jannat 2 in 2012, co-starring with Emraan Hashmi. Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama stated of Esha Gupta's debut performance, "Debutante Esha Gupta enchants you with her captivating charm." She appears a little rough around the edges at times, but she does her part confidently." "As for the debutante, Esha Gupta, I guess she may have to enrol herself in an acting school," Glam Sham's Martin D'Souza commented. "Esha Gupta, who looks like a cross between Lara Dutta and Isha Koppikar, is merely there for the glam quotient," said Gaurav Malani. "Even Esha Gupta manages to cry somewhat convincingly but then there is hardly anything for her to do," Bollywoodlife's Asha Mahadevan stated. Her task is limited to looking seductive, which she accomplishes admirably." The film was a box office triumph, grossing 430 million (US$5.4 million) nationally, bringing Gupta greater attention. Gupta later signed on for Vikram Bhatt's Raaz 3D alongside her Jannat 2 co-stars Emraan Hashmi and Bipasha Basu. Gupta received mixed reviews from critics for her acting abilities, with film critic Komal Nahta noting, "Esha Gupta is stiff as Sanjana but does much better towards the end (when she almost goes berserk)". "Both Bipasha and Esha get liberal scope to show off booty," India Today stated. A Bhatt film in which the girls do not get to display their bodies is unthinkable; after all, Bipasha looks hot in her starring role, but Esha shows a few raw edges." Raaz 3D did well at the box office in the first three days of its release, grossing over 360 million. Chakravyuh, her third film of the year, was invited to screen at the London Film Festival.
Esha had a cameo appearance in the 2013 film Gori Tere Pyaar Mein. She appeared in Sajid Khan's comedy Humshakals in 2014, starring Saif Ali Khan, Riteish Deshmukh, Ram Kapoor, Bipasha Basu, and Tamannaah. It was labelled a "disaster" by Box Office India.
She starred as the primary antagonist in the 2017 action picture Commando 2, which was a moderate box office success. She appeared as a supporting character in the 2019 comedy film Total Dhamaal. In its first twelve days of release, the film earned 200 crore (US$28 million) globally, making it one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films of 2019.
Esha is seen participating in environmental activities such as "Beach Cleanup Drives," "Walk for Saving the Mangroves," and forest protection. She is also involved with Surman Sansthan, which works to empower and educate girls.
Gupta is currently dating Manuel Campos Guallar. She is a vegetarian.
