Ella Summer Purnell is an English actress who was born on September 17, 1996. She began her career on the West End and in the films Never Let Me Go (2010), Intruders (2011), Wildlike, and Maleficent (both 2014).

Purnell later appeared on television in the BBC drama Ordeal by Innocence (2018), the Starz series Sweetbitter (2018-2019), the ITV miniseries Belgravia (2020), and the Showtime thriller Yellowjackets (2021–).

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016), Churchill (2017), and Army of the Dead (2018) are among her films (2021). She portrayed Jinx in Netflix's Arcane and Gwyn in the Paramount+-Nickelodeon series Star Trek: Prodigy (both 2021).

Early years

Ella Summer Purnell was born on September 17, 1996 in the East London neighbourhood of Whitechapel and raised in Bethnal Green. She went to Bethnal Green Montessori, Forest School, City of London School for Girls, and Islington Young Actors Theatre. She also went to the Sylvia Young Theatre School on a weekly basis to study acting, singing, and dancing, and was represented by their in-house talent agency.

Career

Purnell beat out hundreds of other girls in 2008 for a part in Oliver! at London's Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. She won the role of Young Ruth (played by Keira Knightley as an adult) in Mark Romanek's Never Let Me Go, a feature film based on Kazuo Ishiguro's novel of the same name. It was released to positive reviews in 2010. She was then cast as Kayleigh in Gustavo Ron's Ways to Live Forever, based on Sally Nicholls' book, and as Mia in Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's Intruders. Purnell was named one of the ten UK Stars of Tomorrow by Screen International. In June 2011, she also appeared in the BBC HD film short Candy.

Purnell played the character Dolce in the 2013 feature film Kick-Ass 2. The following year, she starred in the independent film WildLike, for which she received a number of film festival accolades, and she played the adolescent version of Angelina Jolie's titular character in Disney's Maleficent. Purnell appeared in Tim Burton's adaptation of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, based on Ransom Riggs' novel of the same name, in 2016. She portrayed Mia in Access All Areas in 2017. Purnell was cast as Winston Churchill's secretary Helen Garrett in the historical drama film Churchill later that year.

Television

Purnell starred as Hester Argyll in the BBC miniseries Ordeal By Innocence, based on Agatha Christie's novel of the same name, in 2018. Purnell later that year starred in the Starz show Sweetbitter, based on Stephanie Danler's novel of the same name. She portrayed Tess, a naive 22-year-old who moves to New York City in search of a new life and becomes engrossed in the world of fine dining. Starz announced the cancellation of the series in December 2019. Purnell will appear as Lady Maria Grey in Julian Fellowes' period drama Belgravia, which will be co-produced by ITV and Epix in 2020. She debuted as Jackie in the Showtime drama series Yellowjackets in 2021. Later that year, she voiced Gwyn in the Star Trek: Prodigy animated series and Jinx in the Netflix animated series Arcane.
