American actress Elizabeth Chase Olsen was born on February 16, 1989. Olsen, a California native, started acting at the age of four. She made her acting debut in the 2011 thriller Martha Marcy May Marlene, for which she received critical acclaim and was nominated for several awards. She then played a supporting role in the horror movie Silent House. Olsen was nominated for a BAFTA Rising Star Award and later earned a degree from New York University.
Olsen won acclaim for her portrayal of Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe media franchise. She played the role in the superhero movies Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), and WandaVision (2021). She received nominations for a Primetime Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award for her work in WandaVision.
In addition to her work with Marvel, Olsen has appeared in the drama Ingrid Goes West (2017), the mystery picture Wind River (2017), and the monster movie Godzilla (2014). In the drama series Sorry for Your Loss (2018–2019), which she executive produced and starred in, she was nominated for a Critics' Choice Television Award for her portrayal of a widow.
Early Life and Education
California's Sherman Oaks is where Elizabeth Chase Olsen was born on February 16, 1989. Her father, Dave, is a real estate agent, while her mother, Jarnie, was formerly a dancer. She is the younger sibling of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, identical twin fashion designers who went on to have successful careers as television and movie actors. In addition, Olsen has a younger half-sister, a younger half-brother, and an elder brother. In 1996, her parents were divorced.
At the age of four, Olsen made her acting debut in Mary-Kate and Ashley's films, including the 1994 television movie How the West Was Fun and the direct-to-video series The Adventures of Mary-Kate & Ashley. She attended acting workshops and a musical theatre camp as a young child. Due to Mary-Kate's eating condition receiving so much public attention in 2004, Olsen almost gave up acting. She attended Campbell Hall School in the Californian city of Studio City. During her time at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University (NYU), Olsen studied at Atlantic Theater Company and spent a semester abroad at the Moscow Art Theatre School in Russia. She was able to land understudy roles in the 2009 Broadway production of Impressionism and the 2008 off-Broadway production of Dust, which helped her land an agent. Olsen earned his NYU degree in January 2013.
Early responsibilities and success in the career (2011–2014)
Martha Marcy May Marlene, a 2011 thriller, marked Olsen's acting debut. Following its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, the movie and her performance both won praise from critics. For her portrayal of the title character, a young woman suffering from delusions after leaving her cult life and returning to her family, Olsen was nominated for a number of honors, including the Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Actress and the Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead. She ascribed her passion with mental diseases to her attraction in the character. The horror movie Silent House was Olsen's next acting role, and it received "rave reviews". It was released in 2012, despite having its Sundance premiere alongside Martha Marcy May Marlene. During this time, she also acted in the comedies Liberal Arts and Red Lights.
At the 66th British Academy Film Awards in January 2013, Olsen received a nomination for the BAFTA Rising Star Award. In the biographical drama Kill Your Darlings, she portrayed Edie Parker, who wrote the Beat Generation memoir You'll Be Okay and was Jack Kerouac's first wife. She plays Marie Sebastian, a nurse who aids the lead character, played by Josh Brolin, in finding his daughter, in the American version of the 2003 South Korean film Oldboy. She played the lead role of Juliet in a Shakespearean off-Broadway production of Romeo and Juliet that same year. Her portrayal was described as "alternating between saucy petulance and hysteria" by Ben Brantley, a writer for the New York Times. She portrayed the title character in In Secret, a movie that was made from Émile Zola's 1867 book Thérèse Raquin. The movie was made available in February 2014. Alongside Bryan Cranston and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Olsen starred in the monster movie Godzilla later that year. The movie earned positive reviews and made $529 million overall on a $160 million budget. In the same year, she and Dakota Fanning co-starred in the movie Very Good Girls, which Josh Duboff of Vanity Fair described as receiving unfavorable reviews, playing teenage girls in Brooklyn.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe's ongoing success (from 2015 to the present)
Olsen became a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe by appearing in the blockbuster sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron from 2015. She played Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch in the movie, making the comic book character's screen debut. In a post-credits scene of the 2014 movie Captain America: The Winter Soldier, she made her debut appearance as the role alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who played Pietro Maximoff. Olsen portrayed the character with an accent from the imaginary nation of Sokovia, which she compared to Slovakian. In Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019), which is now the second-highest-grossing movie of all time, she reprised the role. Olsen achieved fame thanks to the part.
In Marc Abraham's biographical film I Saw the Light from 2015, Olsen played Audrey Williams, the manager and duet partner of singer Hank Williams, who was represented by Tom Hiddleston. In the comedy-drama film Ingrid Goes West and the mystery movie Wind River, both of which were released in August to positive reviews, she played a rookie FBI agent and a social media influencer, respectively. Olsen's "incongruously high-schoolish demeanor" in Wind River bothered David Edelstein of Vulture, but Peter Travers of Rolling Stone praised her "major eye-opener of a performance" in Ingrid Goes West, calling it "toxic perfection". The year after, she starred in the Netflix movie Kodachrome as a caretaker to an actor named Ed Harris who played a photographer. The web television series Sorry for Your Loss, which debuted on Facebook Watch in September 2018, featured Olsen as a young widow named Leigh Shaw and she also served as executive producer. She claimed that throughout the three years it took to create the series, she was able to completely lose herself in Shaw's ideas. The series received favorable reviews from critics, who praised Olsen's portrayal as "stunning," "disciplined and sharp," and "slyly sympathetic," earning her a nomination for the Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series. After two seasons, the show was terminated in January 2020.
Olsen reprised his role as Maximoff in the superhero miniseries WandaVision, which debuted on Disney+ in January 2021 and starred Paul Bettany as Vision. Critics applauded the cast and commended Olsen and Bettany's connection, with Alex Abad-Santos of Vox calling Olsen's portrayal excellent and Linda Holmes of NPR calling it a "indelible central performance" in their respective evaluations. For her work, Olsen received nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Film and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress - Miniseries or Television Film. In the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness movie, which was released in May 2022 to mixed reviews, she repeated the part. Olsen's performance was praised; Variety's Owen Gleiberman said it "generates an operatic fire."
Olsen will play Texas housewife Candy Montgomery in the HBO Max limited series Love and Death, which centers on a 1980 homicide.
Personal life
Olsen claims that at the age of 13, she stopped believing in God because she holds the opinion that "religion should be about community and having a place to go in prayer, not something that should determine women's freedoms." She used to be a licensed real estate agent in New York, having moved there initially. Olsen represents the brand Bobbi Brown Cosmetics. She was romantically linked to actor Boyd Holbrook from 2011 till 2014.
After dating musician Robbie Arnett for three years, of the American band Milo Greene, Olsen announced their engagement in July 2019. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the couple wed in secret after eloping. She resides in Los Angeles with Arnett. Hattie Harmony: Worry Detective, a children's book they co-wrote, was published in June 2022.
