Additionally, Lovato disclosed that Aguilera was the inspiration for her sixth studio album, Tell Me You Love Me. "I grew up listening to Christina Aguilera. She was one of my idols growing up. She still is. Her voice is incredible, and in Stripped you really got to hear that. I think it was her breakthrough album that really transformed her into the icon that she is today. So that inspired me... she really inspired this album. I was even inspired by the black and white artwork," said Lovato.
Voice
Lovato has won praise for her singing from reviewers throughout her career. She's definitely a stronger singer than the Jonases, according to Nick Levine of Digital Spy, who added that her full-bodied vocal performances are consistently impressive. Becky Brain of Idolator added that Lovato has a "killer voice and the A-list material to put it to good use." In her review of Lovato's second studio album Here We Go Again, Jeff Miers from The Buffalo News said, "Unlike so many of her Disney-fied peers, Lovato can really sing," and he found it "refreshing" that she "doesn't need the help of Auto-Tune... to mask any lack of natural ability." Sophie Schillaci of The Hollywood Reporter said that Lovato "has a voice that can silence even the harshest of critics."
Ryan Tedder said of working with Lovato on her third studio album Unbroken: "I had no idea how good her voice is. She's one of the best singers I've ever worked with. Literally, that good. I mean, she's a Kelly Clarkson-level vocalist. And Kelly has a set of pipes." He also said of their collaboration on the song "Neon Lights" from her fourth studio album: "She has one of the biggest ranges."
"You don't need shiny distractions when you can belt out songs like Demi and connect with the crowd on such an emotional level," Mike Wass from Idolator said in a review of the Neon Lights Tour. For those who haven't bothered to follow Lovato's career, let's get one thing out of the way: [Lovato] can sing. At 22 years old, her vocal range is astounding. Marielle Wakim from Los Angeles magazine praised Lovato's vocals in a review of the Demi World Tour, calling them "spectacular."
At Super Bowl LIV in 2020, Lovato's rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" received praise. She had a "flawless performance," according to Patrick Ryan of USA Today, who also called Lovato "one of the best vocalists in the business right now." He noticed that Lovato "hit all the high notes with ease" and ultimately "even added some of her own riffs" which he claims led to "a rendition that was uniquely and phenomenally" her own.
Private life
Residence
For her family, Lovato bought a Mediterranean-style home in Los Angeles on August 20, 2010, the day she turned 18. However, after completing treatment in January 2011, Lovato chose to reside in a "sober house" in the city. Lovato also paid $8.3 million in September 2016 for a house in Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles, which she later sold for $8.25 million. Lovato paid $7 million for a house in Studio City, Los Angeles, in September 2020.
Hobbies
In 2016, Lovato began studying Brazilian jiu-jitsu. On February 4, 2023, she received a promotion to purple belt in the sport.
Relationships, Gender, And Sexuality
In 2009, Lovato had a brief relationship with singer Trace Cyrus. In 2010, Lovato had a brief romance with Joe Jonas, her Camp Rock co-star. After that, Lovato and actor Wilmer Valderrama had an on-again, off-again romance. They first started dating in August 2010 when Valderrama was 29 and Lovato was 18. Their union came to an end in June 2016. Although Lovato did not explicitly state it, it was widely assumed that her 2022 single "29" was about Valderrama and the significant age difference in their relationship. Later, from January to July 2017, Lovato dated UFC fighter Guilherme "Bomba" Vasconcelos. Before March 2019, Lovato dated designer Henry Levy for a brief period in late 2018. Up until the end of 2019, she dated model Austin Wilson for a short while. Lovato announced her engagement to actor Max Ehrich on July 23, 2020. Four months before, the two had started dating, but they broke off their engagement in September. People stated that Lovato was in a "happy and healthy relationship" with a male musician around the beginning of August 2022. The relationship was officially announced on August 20 by Canadian musician Jutes in an Instagram post commemorating Lovato's 30th birthday.
Lovato has said she is open to falling in love with a person of any gender and that her sexuality is fluid. She identified as queer in a social media post lamenting the passing of her Glee co-star Naya Rivera in July 2020. In a March 2021 interview, Lovato declared, "I've always known I was hella queer, but I have fully embraced it." At the time, she described herself as "just too queer" to date guys. She also referred to the LGBT community as the "alphabet mafia" and said that she was glad to be a member.
I'm still learning and coming into myself; I don't claim to be an expert or a spokesperson. Sharing this with you now opens another level of vulnerability for me. On May 19, 2021, Lovato publicly came out as non-binary and announced the decision to change her gender pronouns to they/them. She had previously come out as non-binary to her family and friends towards the end of 2020. Later, in April 2022, Lovato changed her pronouns to include she/her. The following August, she described herself as a "fluid person" who had "adopted the pronouns of she/her again" after feeling "more feminine." She affirmed that she "still feel very comfortable with they/them" in September of that year.
Substance Abuse And Mental Health
Before her first rehab stay at age 18, Lovato had battled bulimia nervosa, self-harm, and harassment. Lovato left the Jonas Brothers: Live in Concert tour on November 1, 2010, and checked herself into a rehab centre for "physical and emotional issues." After assaulting backup dancer Alex Welch, she reportedly made the decision to get therapy; her family and management team persuaded her that she needed it. According to Lovato, she accepted "100 percent, full responsibility" for the incident. She finished her in-patient care at Timberline Knolls on January 28, 2011, and then she went back home. In addition to having bulimia, cutting herself, and "self-medicating" with drugs and alcohol "like a lot of teens do to numb their pain," Lovato also admitted to having bulimia. She continued by saying that she had "basically had a nervous breakdown" and that throughout her treatment, bipolar disorder had been identified. Later, she revealed that she used to smuggle cocaine onto aeroplanes and use it frequently. Lovato revealed that she started using opiates at the age of 13 following a car accident and "was already drinking" at the time in a 2022 interview with the podcast Call Her Daddy. She claimed that as a result, when she was 17, she began using cocaine.
Lovato started writing for Seventeen magazine as a contributing editor in April 2011 and wrote an article about her hardships. Demi Lovato: Stay Strong, a documentary about her treatment and rehabilitation, broadcast on MTV in March 2012. The following month, she started creating her fourth studio album. According to a report from January 2013, Lovato had been residing at a sober-living residence in Los Angeles for more than a year because she believed it to be the best way to prevent relapsing into her eating issue and addiction. On March 15, 2017, Lovato marked her five-year sober anniversary.
In her 2017 YouTube documentary Demi Lovato: Simply Complicated, Lovato admitted that her treatment at Timberline Knolls had not been entirely successful, saying that she had continued to struggle with alcoholism and a cocaine addiction in the year after her stay there. She also acknowledged that, while being interviewed for the Demi Lovato: Stay Strong documentary about her sobriety, she had actually been under the influence of cocaine. "I wasn't working my programme. I wasn't ready to get sober. I was sneaking it on planes, sneaking it in bathrooms, and sneaking it all night. Nobody knew," she admitted.
In addition, Lovato said that her drug and alcohol abuse had affected her ability to do live shows and market her Unbroken album. She cited a 2012 appearance on American Idol in which she appeared extremely hung over. Lovato's management team announced their decision to part ways with her after she agreed to begin addiction treatment and counselling. As a result, she moved to a sober-living home in Los Angeles with roommates and responsibilities to aid in her recovery from her drug and alcohol addictions. Despite having previously claimed to be completely clean of hard drugs like heroin, Lovato revealed in March 2021 that she was still occasionally using alcohol and marijuana. Many of her friends openly disapproved of this decision. She chose moderation because she believed that vowing to never drink or smoke again would be setting herself up for failure. When she abandoned her "California sober ways" and proclaimed herself "sober sober" the following December, Lovato claimed it was because she had been taught that "one drink was equivalent to a crack pipe."
I was acting out when I was 18 for many reasons, but I know now from multiple different doctors that it was not because I was bipolar. I had to grow the fuck up, said Lovato in 2021, adding that the diagnosis has been changed to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which she said she had initially accepted as it explained her erratic behaviour in 2011.
Drug Overdose In 2018
After revealing she had relapsed after six years of recovery, Lovato released the single "Sober" on June 21, 2018. She was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre in Los Angeles on the morning of July 24, 2018, after emergency personnel were called to her residence due to an opioid overdose. Later in the day, it was announced that Lovato was stable and making a full recovery. She recounted, "The doctors told me that I had five to 10 minutes, like, if no one had found me, then I wouldn't be here." She allegedly overdosed on oxycodone laced with fentanyl and needed naloxone to be revived.
Lovato reportedly experienced numerous health issues as a result of the overdose, including multiple strokes, a heart attack, and brain damage, which led to long-term visual issues. She spent two weeks in the hospital before moving into an in-patient rehab centre.
Due in major part to the public interest surrounding the overdose, Lovato's drug overdose garnered enormous media coverage, making her the most googled person of 2018 ahead of other personalities who had received extensive coverage throughout the year. The overdose was named as the 29th biggest story of 2018 by CBS News.
Taking to Twitter in December 2018, Lovato denied reports that she had overdosed and thanked her followers, saying, "If I feel like the world needs to know something, I will tell them MYSELF. All my fans need to know is that I'm working hard on myself, I'm happy and clean, and I'm SO grateful for their support." She later added that someday she would "tell the world what exactly happened, why it happened, and what my life is like today.. but until I'
During a 2020 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Lovato discussed the issue. She went into detail about how her deteriorating bulimia struggles in 2018 contributed to her eventual drug overdose, as she had relapsed three months earlier as a result of being incredibly unhappy. The singer blamed these difficulties on the drastic steps her then-manager, Phil McIntyre, took to regulate the food she ate. "People checking what my orders at Starbucks were on my bank statements... just little things like that... it led me to being really unhappy and my bulimia got really bad and I asked for help and I didn't receive the help that I needed," Lovato continued. "Along with the controlling nature of my management team, they did not provide me with the help that I needed." She also recalled her thoughts the night she relapsed after six years of sobriety.
Traumatic Rape
In 2021, Lovato claimed that she was raped at the age of 15 while working as a Disney Channel performer, and that the perpetrator was a co-star who she had to keep seeing after the incident. She developed bulimia and started self-harming after the incident. Lovato claimed she did not recognise the act as rape at the time because she was a member of the Disney crowd who wore purity rings and were waiting until marriage and that sexual activity was not normalised to her. She told someone about the incident, but the attacker "never got in trouble for it. They never got taken out of the movie they were in." Her belief that everyone should "speak their voice if they can and feel comfortable doing so" led her to choose to share her experience. Additionally, Lovato claimed that she was raped during her 2018 drug overdose, realising a month later that she was not in a position to give her consent at that time.
