Deborah Ann Ryan is an American actress and singer who was born on May 13, 1993. When Disney Channel conducted a countrywide search for new talent, she was discovered. She began performing professionally onstage at the age of seven.
Ryan has performed in several prominent roles on the Disney Channel, including The Suite Life on Deck (2008–2011), 16 Wishes (2010), Jessie (2011–2015), and Radio Rebel (2012). Additionally, she acted in the drama What If... (2010) and the 2018–2019 television series Insatiable. She rose to fame in the music industry by lending her vocals to the Disney project soundtracks, and in 2013 she started the band The Never Ending, with whom she later released the EP One (2014).
Early Years
On May 13, 1993, Deborah Ann Ryan was born in Huntsville, Alabama. She has a sibling. Her mother was involved in school plays and is a teacher. The family moved throughout Europe frequently due to her father's work as a civilian consultant to the U.S. military, and they lived in Germany until she was ten. At the age of seven, she began performing in live theatre on an American post in Germany. She was homeschooled in addition to attending public schools in both Germany and the United States. After that, they came back to the country and lived in Texas. She called Fort Hood home. Ryan referred to herself as a "nerd" at school in an interview she gave to People Magazine in 2009. She endured harassment in middle school for belonging to the chess club and being the school mascot.
Career
In her early teen years, Ryan started appearing in a variety of television commercials. She debuted on television in 2006 on the programme Barney & Friends. In 2007's Barney: Let's Go to the Firehouse, Ryan appeared as a guest character and took on the role of a teenage girl. She made multiple appearances in advertisements for board games and iDog; in 2008, she starred in an iDog Dance promo. Ryan played Edith, a pivotal character, in the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer drama The Longshots. The Suite Life on Deck, a follow-up to the popular Disney Channel series The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, featured Ryan as Bailey Pickett, one of the major characters. On September 26, 2008, the pilot episode of the series premiered in the United States, where it quickly rose to the top spot among Family channel debuts in Canada. The protagonist is an extremely smart girl who boarded the ship to flee the imaginary Kansas town of Kettlecorn because she detested how little it was. The show won the 2008 Teen Choice Award for Best Scripted Television Series, topping veteran shows Hannah Montana and Wizards of Waverly Place. The series outperformed rival teen programmes to become 2009's highest-rated scripted series.
Alongside Kevin Sorbo and Kristy Swanson, Ryan landed a leading role in the independent movie What If... in 2009. The movie was produced in Michigan's Grand Rapids and Manistee in July 2009 and premiered in theatres on August 20, 2010. A Christian family is the subject of the Pure Flix Entertainment-produced movie. Ryan organised the inaugural Tween Girl Summit Music Festival in October 2009. Denise Restauri, the creator of The Tween Summit, AllyKatzz.com, and AK Tweens, stated that tween girls are drawn to great performers who radiate love of life. "We are so happy to have teen favourite Debby Ryan as the first host of The Tween Summit Music Festival." Originally scheduled to begin on July 9, 2009, and end on July 14, 2009, the "Terrific Teen Tour" with Mitchel Musso, Jasmine Richards, and Savannah Outen as co-headliners was cancelled due to scheduling issues. Ryan would have made his live music debut on the tour. She starred in the young adult movie 16 Wishes in 2010. Additionally, because the film attracted a lot of viewers in the adults demographic, Ryan was introduced to new audiences through it, including the modern adult audience. Ryan mentioned that she watched a lot of Brat Pack films to be ready for her role in 16 Wishes.
The Suite Life Movie, based on the television series Ryan had appeared in, premiered on March 25, 2011. She debuted the promotional song "Made of Matches" on March 29. It was the theme song for the R.L. Stine's The Haunting Hour episode of the Discovery Family series, in which she also appeared. On May 6, 2011, The Suite Life on Deck's run came to an end. She released We Ended Right, an alternative hip-hop song with Chad Hively & Chase Ryan, as her debut solo single on July 6. Her own label, the Ryan River Studio, which she co-founded with her brother Chase Ryan, released the song. Ryan's own Disney Channel series, Jessie, which premiered in September 2011, was also announced in 2011. The show centres on a young woman who relocates to New York City from Texas with the intention of becoming a star but ends up working as a nanny for a family of four. She also contributed to the creation of the television programme Jessie since she wanted her character to reflect herself. Ryan became the youngest female director for a Disney Channel production when she helmed the "Coffee Talk" episode of season three. She also appeared as a recovering drug addict in a guest appearance on an episode of the TV series Private Practise, a change towards a more adult role.
In the Disney Channel film Radio Rebel, which debuted on February 17, 2012, Ryan played Tara, a shy adolescent who hates talking to others in her school. However, in the solitude of her bedroom, Tara adopts the most well-known online radio persona known by the moniker "Radio Rebel." On February 21, she made available a cover of The Go-Gos' "We Got the Beat" as the movie's promotional single. She provided the voice for Spike in the Tinker Bell movie Secret of the Wings on August 31, 2012. She joined forces with drummer Johnny Franco and guitarist Kyle Moore to form the independent band The Never Ending in 2012. She is a multi-instrumentalist who plays the keyboard, guitar, and piano. Ryan played Haddie in the 2013 movie Kristin's Christmas Past. She taped a scene as Savana for the March 21, 2014, release of Muppets Most Wanted, however the segment was cut. Later, the scene was added back in the extended cut of the Blu-ray release. The Never Ending's first single, "Mulholland Drive," had its online premiere on Billboard on June 1. On June 24, they released their debut EP One, which included circus-themed record art. She also played Jade in the TV show Mighty Med and served as a guest consultant for Fashion Police's fifth season. Ryan debuted as Aubrey Macavoy in the premiere of a Girl Meets World episode on April 17, 2015. The Never Ending's "Secondhand" was their brand-new song that they unveiled on June 23, 2015. Later that year, the group went on tour as the opening act for Fifth Harmony's Reflection Tour's North American leg.
Ryan was hired as Lucy Diamond, Laura's intoxicated and trouble-making younger paternal half-sister and the half-aunt of Nicholas and Harrison, in season two of the NBC police drama The Mysteries of Laura in 2016. Ryan's inclusion in the cast of the comedy series Sing It! was confirmed at the same time. On May 25, 2016, the programme made its premiere on YouTube Red, a for-fee service that offers access to original television shows and motion pictures. Ryan portrayed Holli Holiday, a well-known and conceited singer who exploits the fictitious talent competition Sing It! to promote herself. Paula Abdul served as the inspiration for the role. On August 22, Ryan's participation in the Daytime Divas drama series on VH1, which is based on the book Satan's Sisters by former The View presenter Star Jones, was officially announced. On June 5, 2017, the show made its debut. She will take on the role of Maddie Finn, a former host of The Lunch Hour and Kibby's adversary who want to rejoin the programme.
After being rejected by The CW, Ryan revealed via her Instagram account in June 2017 that Netflix had ordered Insatiable to series. On August 10, 2018, the first season's debut aired. After two seasons, the show was terminated on February 14, 2020.
Ryan and Alison Brie co-starred in the Jeff Baena-helmed thriller Horse Girl for Netflix in 2020. Ryan was chosen to star in Adam Randall's suspenseful Netflix film Night Teeth that same year. She also made an appearance in Steve Byrne's film The Opening Act.
In 2022, Ryan would star alongside Alison Brie in the film Spin Me Round. The following year, he would also make four appearances in Peacock Originals' The Resort.
Ryan starred in Randall Park's 2023 Asian American love drama Shortcomings.
Other Businesses
Fashion
Ryan began developing a clothing line for 2013 in July 2012. She admitted that she was just starting to establish herself as a fashion brand and that she had been researching designers and spoke with potential employers.
Personal life
Christian is Ryan. She speaks German fluently because growing up, her family moved over Europe as a result of her father's military employment.
Josh Dun, the drummer for Twenty One Pilots, and Ryan dated from May 2013 to September 2014 before picking back up at an undisclosed time. They tied the knot on December 31, 2019, in Austin, Texas.
Ryan admitted to having been in an abusive relationship in March 2015, however she defined it as a professional rather than a romantic one. The event motivated her to join Mary Kay and Love is Respect for their "Don't Look Away" anti-domestic violence campaign, she said, since "it was such emotional manipulation to the point where it became physical."
Ryan was detained for driving while intoxicated in April 2016. She was released after posting $100,000 bond after her initial DUI conviction was ultimately reduced to two misdemeanours. She accepted responsibility for reckless driving on June 30 and was given a three-year probationary period, community service, and a DUI programme to complete.
Ryan and her partner Dun have been residing in Columbus, Ohio, as of March 2023.
Artistry
Ryan claimed that her Suite Life co-star Brenda Song is her acting role model in a 2009 People interview. Ryan said that Meryl Streep is an inspiration to her in a March 2009 interview, describing Streep as "so profoundly thought-provoking and life-changing." She has acknowledged Anne Hathaway, Rachel McAdams, and Tobey Maguire as some of her additional role models.
Her musical genres include folk, indie pop, and country, according to Ryan. She named Tom Petty, April Smith and the Great Picture Show, Mumford & Sons, and The Lumineers as musical influences for her band's debut EP. I love jazz," she responded when questioned about her musical preferences. I enjoy singing it. I also adore the country! My brother enjoys rock music and has a laid-back, Jason Mraz-like aesthetic. Therefore, my basic response is: jazz-country-rock-alternative. I don't know! But I really want to write country music.
