Early years
Daisy Jazz Isobel Ridley was born on 10 April 1992 in Westminster, London, and grew up in Maida Vale. She is the youngest of three daughters born to photographer Christopher Ridley and internal communications specialist Louise (née Fawkner-Corbett). Kika Rose and Poppy Sophia are her two older sisters, and she also has two older half-sisters. The Fawkner-Corbetts, her mother's family, were landed gentry with military and medical backgrounds. Arnold Ridley, her paternal great-uncle, also served in the military. He also worked as a playwright and actor (best known for his role as Private Godfrey in the sitcom Dad's Army). Daisy's grandfather, John Harry Dunn Ridley, OBE, was the head of the BBC's Engineering Secretariat from 1950 to 1965.
Ridley has stated that her favourite film as a child was Matilda (1996), citing the titular character (played by Mara Wilson) as a role model. While she wasn't a huge Star Wars fan when she was younger, she was a huge Harry Potter fan.
Ridley received a scholarship to Tring Park School for the Performing Arts in Hertfordshire, where she studied from the age of nine to eighteen. She went on to study classical civilisation at Birkbeck, University of London, before leaving to pursue her acting career. Ridley worked as a bartender at two different pubs in London for nearly two years before being cast in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. She enrolled in online courses with the Open University in 2016 to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in social science.
Beginnings and Star Wars breakthrough in 2013-2015
Ridley's television career began with minor roles in the shows Youngers, Toast of London, Silent Witness, Mr Selfridge, and Casualty. She appeared in the Sci-Fi-London 48-Hour Film Challenge short film Blue Season. Ridley played the lead in Lifesaver 3, an interactive film that received a BAFTA nomination. She also played Kim in Wiley's "Lights On" music video. After her scenes from the British comedy film The Inbetweeners 2 were cut from the final cut, Ridley made her film debut in the 2015 British independent horror film Scrawl.

Ridley was cast as Rey, one of the main characters in The Force Awakens, in April 2014. In February 2014, she was cast in the film. According to Rolling Stone, she was a "total unknown" at the time of her casting. J. J. Abrams' choice of her was seen as a nod to George Lucas' decision to cast relatively unknown actors in the lead roles in the first Star Wars film in 1977.
Ridley began filming her scenes at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire in May 2014, and prior to the film's December 2015 release, she appeared at the launch of a set of Star Wars postage stamps issued by the UK postal service Royal Mail, with her character Rey appearing on a stamp alongside the droid BB-8. The Force Awakens was a major box-office success and the highest-grossing film of 2015, grossing more than $2 billion internationally. Her performance received critical acclaim, with Richard Roeper describing her portrayal as "a breakout performance" and adding "[Harrison] Ford has a terrific father figure chemistry [shared] with Ridley and Boyega".
2016–present: Continuing one's career
In January 2016, Ridley was named executive producer of the documentary The Eagle Huntress, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 24, 2016; she also recorded narration for the film's wide release. Ridley was among the actors who appeared on Barbra Streisand's 2016 album Encore: Movie Partners Sing Broadway. Ridley and Streisand, along with Anne Hathaway, perform the song "At the Ballet" from A Chorus Line, with Ridley playing Bebe, one of a trio of dancers hoping to be cast in a forthcoming show.

Ridley played Mary Debenham in Murder on the Orient Express, an adaptation of Agatha Christie's detective novel of the same name, released in 2017. Kenneth Branagh directed and starred in the film, which began production in November 2016 in London. She also reprised her role as Rey in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which was released in December 2017 and starred alongside Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker.
In January 2018, Ridley starred in Ophelia, a reimagining of Hamlet's story, alongside Naomi Watts and Clive Owen. The film was shot from April to July of 2017 and premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. Ridley played Cottontail in Peter Rabbit, an adaptation of Beatrix Potter's children's stories of the same name, in February 2018.
Ridley appeared as Rey in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the final installment of the sequel trilogy, in December 2019. She is not expected to reprise her role after this film, and is quoted as saying, "I don't think anything could top [Star Wars: The Force Awakens] for this character." She does, however, express interest in reprising the role if necessary, saying "Never, ever say never. I'm always up for a second chance. But the beautiful thing is that it's this wonderful, vast universe with all of these untold stories. I believe there are many cool things that can be made before any potential revisit." She also saw some truth in her co-star Boyega's claim that she would be envious if future films starred someone else as Rey.
Ridley co-starred in Chaos Walking, an adaptation of Patrick Ness's young-adult novel, in 2021. She portrayed Viola Eade opposite Tom Holland as Todd Hewitt. The film is set to be released on March 5, 2021. The film had previously been delayed due to poor test screenings following the film's reshoots, and later due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It received poor reviews and was a box-office failure.
She co-starred with James McAvoy and Willem Dafoe in the point-and-click mystery video game Twelve Minutes. The game received positive reviews, with critics praising Ridley's performance. She also made a surprise appearance as Kate, a horny AI, in Judd Apatow's 2022 film The Bubble. The movie received negative feedback.
Projects in the works
On June 7, 2021, Ridley began filming the lead role in The Marsh King's Daughter in Ontario, Canada. Filming was completed on August 6, 2021. She has signed on to star in Mind Fall, a sci-fi mystery thriller directed by Mathieu Kassovitz, and is currently filming Young Woman and the Sea, a Disney+ biopic about Gertrude Ederle. In 2021-22, she filmed the indie film Sometimes I Think About Dying in Astoria, Oregon, with Rachel Lambert directing and Ridley serving as a first-time main producer. She will play a character in the upcoming French stop-motion animated film The Inventor, which will be released in 2023..
It was announced in May 2022 that Ridley would star in Magpie, a contemporary noir thriller written by her partner Tom Bateman and based on Ridley's original story idea, and directed by Sam Yates. Ridley, Bateman and Kate Solomon of 55 Films act as producers for Magpie and describe the film as a "Hitchcockian thriller that will take audiences on a genuine ride". In January 2023, filming began in London.
Ridley currently resides in Primrose Hill, London. She has been dating actor Tom Bateman, whom she met on the set of Murder on the Orient Express, since 2017. Ridley confirmed her marriage to Bateman during the Sundance Film Festival in January 2023.
Ridley revealed in 2016 that she was diagnosed with endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome at the age of fifteen, necessitating multiple laparoscopic surgery procedures. She claims that her condition left her with low self-esteem as a result of the acne that followed.
Presence on social media
Following the 2016 Teen Choice Awards, which honoured victims of gun violence, Ridley posted an anti-gun violence message on Instagram and Facebook. Her post sparked public outrage, with critics accusing Ridley of hypocrisy in light of the violence depicted in her Star Wars films. Because of this, she deleted her social media accounts, but briefly returned to Instagram, claiming the reason for the deletion was because she had "a busy few months ahead so wanted less distractions". In 2017, she stated that social media is "highly unhealthy for people's mental health," including her own. Ridley went on to say in a 2019 interview that he would never return to social media. She stated, "I honestly think now, with social media and stuff...great it's to have freedom of expression, but I do feel like people think opinions have so much weight... I don't believe bad vibes should be exposed to the sun. It's perilous. It's great for people in serious and dire situations to be able to communicate, but for the most part, I think — no, no, no.
Ridley returned to Instagram on April 4, 2022, after being absent for six years. In her first post, she is seen sipping tea and engaging in self-care "refreshed, recharged, and ready for what I'm calling my 'Year of Yes'". Orient Express co-star Leslie Odom Jr. and Chewbacca actor Joonas Suotamo greeted Ridley's return to Instagram.
