American actress and former model Christina Rene Hendricks was born on May 3, 1975. She has a long history in theater and film and has won numerous awards, including two Screen Actors Guild Awards, two Critics' Choice Awards for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, and six Primetime Emmy Award nominations. She is well-known for playing Joan Harris in the acclaimed AMC drama series Mad Men. She was voted "the sexiest woman in the world" in a poll of female readers conducted by Esquire magazine in 2010. Additionally, she won the title of "Best Looking Woman in America".
Hendricks was raised in Portland, Oregon, and Twin Falls, Idaho, where she became involved in the local theater. She was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, to an American mother and an English father. She relocated to New York City after completing her high school education in Virginia and started a modeling career after entering a Seventeen cover competition. Before making the switch to acting, she spent more than ten years working as a model globally.
Prior to being cast as Joan Holloway on the AMC historical drama series Mad Men in 2007, Hendricks had guest appearances on a number of television shows, including Beggars and Choosers (2001–2002) and Kevin Hill (2004–2005). She remained a main cast member of the show until its finale in 2015. She garnered favorable reviews for her performance, garnering nominations for six Emmy Awards and numerous Screen Actors Guild Awards for Best Ensemble. She started acting in movies when she was on Mad Men, garnering praise for her work in Ryan Gosling's neo-noir fantasy Lost River (2014), Sally Potter's drama Ginger & Rosa (2012), and Nicolas Winding Refn's action-drama Drive (2011).
Hendricks appeared in the SundanceTV drama series Hap and Leonard (2016) as well as the comedic series Another Period from 2015 to 2016 after Mad Men ended. She worked with Refn again for a supporting part in his 2016 thriller The Neon Demon, and then she appeared in his 2017 comedy Fist Fight, 2018 horror movie The Strangers: Prey at Night, and 2019 animation comedy Toy Story 4. With major roles in the NBC comedy-crime series Good Girls (2018–2021) and the crime drama series Tin Star (2017–2019), she made her television comeback.
EarlyLife
On May 3, 1975, in Knoxville, Tennessee, Christina Rene Hendricks was born. She was the second child of English father Robert Hendricks, a Forest Service employee from Birmingham, and American mother Jackie Sue Hendricks (née Raymond), a psychologist. She is a dual citizen of the United States and Great Britain thanks to her father. One older brother is hers. Due to her father's employment with the Forest Service, her family constantly moved; when she was two months old, they initially went to Georgia; later, they settled in Portland, Oregon, where she attended elementary school.
Hendricks' family relocated from Portland to Twin Falls, Idaho, when she was nine years old, where she finished both elementary and middle school. She called her family "outdoorsy" and mentioned that they frequently went on camping trips in the Pacific Northwest. Hendricks participated in a production of Grease there after her mother pushed her and her brother to join a community theater organization in Twin Falls to meet people. She remembered, "I had all these wonderful pals through the theater company. And it was a neighborhood that held theater in the highest regard. The entire village would attend a performance performed by the children. In addition, being an actress made you cool. Hendricks, a natural blonde, started coloring her hair red when she was 10 years old, being inspired by the book Anne of Green Gables.
When Hendricks was a teenager, her family had to relocate close to Washington, D.C. because of her father's profession. Fairfax, Virginia, became their new home. She called her transition from Idaho to Virginia "traumatic" and mentioned that she experienced a lot of bullying while at Fairfax High School. Hendricks referred to herself as a "outcast" and a "goth" and discovered friendship in the school's theater club, where she performed in plays. She studied ballet throughout her adolescence in addition to theater. She graduated from a nearby community college after spending her senior year at Fairfax High School, where she started.
Career
1994–2006: Early acting and a modeling career
Hendricks worked as a shampoo girl and a receptionist after high school before competing to be on the cover of Seventeen magazine. This led to her signing with IMG Models, and at the age of 18, she forwent her pre-acceptance into the acting program at Virginia Commonwealth University in order to relocate to New York City.
She started out as a model between the ages of 18 and 27 in New York, London, and Japan before switching to commercials. During this time, she spent about a year living in London with two teacher friends. She relocated to Los Angeles, California, in her early twenties together with her mother and brother. She initially intended to pursue a career in the music industry's administration, but friends discouraged her, so she continued working as a model instead before going on auditions for acting jobs. She made an appearance in Dr. Pepper and Carl's Jr. commercials, as well as the 1997 music video for "One Hit Wonder" by Everclear. She served as the hand model for the movie poster for American Beauty.
In the MTV anthology series Undressed, she made her acting debut. Her first leading part was as an intern on the Showtime comedy series Beggars and Choosers, which starred a group of young professionals and was filmed in Vancouver from 1999 to 2001. She also appeared in 2000 as a guest on the television show Angel. After that, she made an appearance in the television movie The Big Time (2002) and appeared frequently in episodes of ER (2002), The Court (2003), and Firefly (2002–2003). She was cast in the UPN courtroom drama Kevin Hill, which aired during the 2004–2005 television season, after making a guest appearance on Tru Calling as Nicolette Ray.
Mad Men & other roles, 2007-2015
On the AMC television series Mad Men, which is set in a number of fictitious advertising agencies in 1960s New York City, Hendricks played office manager Joan Holloway, possibly her most well-known role to date. She got favorable reviews for her performance and six Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series during the course of the program's seven seasons.
In La Cucina, a drama that was released on Showtime in December 2009 and included Hendricks as a writer, which was also released in 2007, Hendricks made her feature picture debut. She also starred in the suspenseful movie South of Pico the same year, and she played Olivia, the future stepmother of investigator Charlie Crews and Ted Earley, in four episodes of the NBC drama series Life (2007–2008).
She made an appearance in Broken Bells' 2010 music video for "The Ghost Inside" on the album Broken Bells.
Drive (2011), an action thriller helmed by Nicolas Winding Refn, featured her in a minor role. The drama film Ginger & Rosa starring Sally Potter cast her in a supporting role as the counterculture mother of a teenager growing up in the 1960s the following year. She made her stage debut in 2011 at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in a production of Stephen Sondheim's Company. Sam Harper, a character in the 2011 racing video game Need for Speed: The Run, was voiced by her and featured in the game with her image.
She starred as the title character in Ryan Gosling's fantasy film Lost River, which was set in Detroit and got mixed reviews, in 2014. She played a key role in the 2015 film adaptation of the book Dark Places. She played a prostitute in the Comedy Central series Another Period (2015–2016), which is set in the early 20th century, for two seasons after Mad Men ended in 2015.
Good Girls and other roles from 2016 until the present
She played a modeling agent in the lead role of Nicolas Winding Refn's 2016 thriller The Neon Demon. The movie received mixed reviews from critics, despite being ranked third best of 2016 by the French film magazine Cahiers du cinéma. She played investigator Hap Collins' ex-wife in six episodes of the television series Hap and Leonard the same year.
She starred as the grandmother of a family under assassination in the 2018 home invasion horror movie The Strangers: Prey at Night. Critics gave the movie mainly negative reviews after its debut, though Benjamin Lee of The Guardian appreciated Hendricks' performance. However, it was a $30 million commercial success.
Along with Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner, Hendricks made a comeback to television in 2018 with the Amazon Prime series The Romanoffs. She plays a lady who strives to get financial control over her life by robbing a grocery store in her starring role as one of the leads in the NBC comedic crime series Good Girls. The show lasted till 2021. Hendricks played a lady helping her sister raise her family in a rural Pennsylvania town in the drama American lady, in which she co-starred with Sienna Miller in late 2018. In the 2019 Disney/Pixar animated sequel Toy Story 4, she also provided the voice of Gabby Gabby, the main antagonist. Hendricks provides the voice of Officer Jaffe in the Warner Bros. Scooby-Doo movie Scoob! in 2020.
Criticisms About Her Body
According to British Equalities Minister Lynne Featherstone, Hendricks has the ideal body for a woman. She lauded Hendricks' hourglass figure and said, "Christina Hendricks is just lovely... More of these role models are necessary. When a curvy role model is there, there is such a thrill. It shouldn't be that uncommon. According to Mary McNamara, a television critic for the Los Angeles Times, Joan's portrayal has changed how people view beauty on television. She has been referred to as the "new modern ideal of Hollywood glamour—full figured, voluptuous; a throwback to the days of Marilyn Monroe, Jane Russell, and Veronica Lake". Hendricks was chosen by British designer Vivienne Westwood in March 2011 to represent her "Get a Life" Palladium jewelry line.
In 2010, the amount of breast augmentation surgeries performed on British women increased by 10%, according to research by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, which partly credits Hendricks' impact.
Hendricks has grown disenchanted with the phrase "full-figured" and once slammed a reporter who used it when interviewing her. Hendricks stated in September 2010 that women's true talents are not given enough attention by the media, which is too preoccupied with women's bodies. "I was working my butt off on Mad Men when everyone started talking about my body," I said.
Individual Lives
Hendricks wed actor Geoffrey Arend on October 11th, 2009. They declared their separation ten years later, and in December 2019 their divorce became final. She has a romantic relationship with cameraman George Bianchini as of 2021. In March 2023, they declared their engagement.
