Choi Si-won (Korean: ; Hanja: ; born 7 April 1986) is a South Korean singer, songwriter, model, and actor best known as a member of the South Korean boy band Super Junior. Choi served as UNICEF Korea's special representative for children's issues for four years before being appointed UNICEF regional ambassador for East Asia and the Pacific in November 2019.

Choi, in addition to being a member of Super Junior, has dabbled in solo activities, primarily acting. Oh! My Lady (2010), Poseidon (2011), Revolutionary Love (2017), and My Fellow Citizens! (2019) were his lead roles in Korean dramas, and he had supporting roles in Athena: Goddess of War (2010), The King of Dramas (2012), and She Was Pretty (2013). (2015). Choi has also appeared in films in Chinese, including Helios, To the Fore, and Dragon Blade.

Choi Si-won works as an Audi Korea representative. Choi Si-won was chosen as the Swiss luxury watchmaker Piaget's youngest Asian model in 2015. Choi Si-won was named one of Forbes magazine's "30 Under 30 Asia" in 2016. "One of South Korea's most sought-after singers and actors," according to Si-won.

Choi Si-won will produce a forthcoming film. Choi Siwon of EnterMedia Pictures (CEO Lee Dong Hoon) purchased the rights to the 2011 Daum webtoon "Interview" (romanized from the Korean) in 2015.

Choi Si-won became the first Korean to reach 5 million Twitter followers in October 2015.

Early years

Choi was born on February 10, 1987, in Seoul, South Korea. Ji-won is his younger sister. His father was the former CEO of the pharmaceutical company Boryung Medicine.


Choi was scouted by an SM Entertainment talent agent while waiting for friends in front of his high school when he was 16 years old. The agent suggested he try out for the company's Starlight Casting System. He auditioned without the permission of his parents, and his parents were only notified after he passed the auditions. Although his parents gave him permission to sign a contract with SM Entertainment, they did not assist him because they wanted him to accept responsibility for his actions.

He later moved into dorms with other trainees and received training in singing, acting, dancing, and languages. In 2003, he appeared in a music video for The Grace's Dana while training as a solo singer. Choi made a brief appearance in the family drama Precious Family a year later, and again in the KBS romance comedy drama Drama in 2005. Eighteen, Twenty-Nine as young Kang Bong-man, and in 2006 as Park Sang-woo in the romance melodrama Spring Waltz.

Soon after Choi's first television appearance, SM Entertainment announced that he would make his debut as one of twelve members in a boy band. Choi made his first media appearance with bandmate Han Geng as one of the runway models in a Bum Suk fashion show a few months before Super Junior 05's debut.

Choi made her debut as a member of the 12-member rotational project group Super Junior 05 on SBS' music show Popular Songs on November 6, 2005, performing their first single, "Twins (Knock Out)." A month later, on 5 December 2005, their debut album Twins was released, debuting at number three on the monthly MIAK K-pop album charts.

SM Entertainment began recruiting new members for the next Super Junior generation in March 2006. However, plans changed, and the company announced a halt to the development of future Super Junior generations. After the addition of thirteenth member Kyuhyun, the group dropped the suffix "05" and became known as Super Junior. The re-polished group's first CD single "U" was released on 7 June 2006, and it was their most successful single until the March 2009 release of "Sorry, Sorry," which helped them achieve global success.

Choi was added to Super Junior-M, a seven-member Mandopop subgroup of Super Junior for the Chinese music industry, in April 2008. They made their Chinese debut at the 8th Annual Music Chart Awards on April 8, 2008, the same day as their first music video, "U." The debut Chinese-language studio album, Me, was released on April 23 in selected provinces in China and on May 2 in Taiwan.

Career as an actor

Choi was cast as the Liang Prince in the Hong Kong epic film A Battle of Wits in 2006. This is also his feature film debut. Co-star Andy Lau praised Choi, saying that he sets a good example for Hong Kong actors.

Choi, along with other Super Junior members, appeared in the 2007 film Attack on the Pin-Up Boys. He was cast in MBC's two-episode miniseries Legend of Hyang Dan the same year.

Choi returned to the screen after a three-year absence with SBS' romantic comedy Oh! My Lady. He also appeared in the big-budget spy series Athena: Goddess of War, a spin-off of the 2009 hit drama Iris. He takes on the roles of a data analyst and a rookie elite agent.

Choi starred in KBS' action drama Poseidon in 2011. He co-starred in his first Taiwanese drama Skip Beat! with Ivy Chen and fellow band member Donghae the same year. The show is a live-action adaptation of Yoshiki Nakamura's Japanese shjo manga Skip Beat!.

Choi appeared in SBS' comedy satire drama The King of Dramas, which was based on Korean television production, in 2012. He portrays Kang Hyun-min, a high-profile celebrity with a sour personality.

In 2015, Choi appeared in a number of films. He appeared alongside Jackie Chan in the Hong Kong historical-action film Dragon Blade, as well as in the crime thriller Helios and the sports drama To the Fore. He also appeared in the Chinese romance drama Fall In Love With You Again and the Chinese adaptation of the 2013 hit drama The Heirs, Billion Dollar Heir. Choi returned to Korea to play the second male lead in MBC's romantic comedy She Was Pretty. He gained popularity after receiving critical acclaim for his acting performance and comedic portrayal of the character. For the drama, he released the single "Only You," which topped the music charts.

Choi debuted in the tvN youth romance drama Revolutionary Love alongside Kang So-ra in October 2017. This was his first project after being released from his mandatory military service on August 18, 2017.

Choi appeared in KBS's crime comedy drama My Fellow Citizens! in April 2019.

Private life

Choi, like fellow member Kim Ryeowook, graduated from Apgu Jeong High School in February 2006 and Inha University in February 2012.

Choi is a devout Protestant Christian who has stated in an interview that he would like to become a missionary after his career. On his Twitter and Weibo accounts, he frequently posts Bible quotes. He's also worked with the Christian singing group 3rd Wave Music, as well as other K-pop artists.

Choi was one of the first four South Korean artists to appear on Chinese postage stamps in 2008. The stamps were sold as part of a charity event to raise funds for earthquake victims in China earlier that year.

Choi enlisted as a conscripted police officer on November 19, 2015. On August 18, 2017, he was released from mandatory military service.

Siwon tested positive for COVID-19 on December 10, 2021, and did not attend the 2021 Mnet Asian Music Awards.


On September 30, 2017, Choi's family's untied French bulldog bit their neighbour, 53-year-old businesswoman Kim of Hanilkwan, an upmarket Korean cuisine restaurant. This resulted in the victim's death six days after the incident. Sepsis caused by the bite was identified as the cause. On October 21, 2017, Choi and his father both posted letters of apology to their Instagram accounts. Despite the fact that a family member of the deceased told the media that the family was unwilling to pursue legal action, the Choi family received harsh criticism from the public for failing to take any precautionary measures with their dog.

Since 2010, Choi has participated in numerous UNICEF campaigns. On November 12, 2015, he was appointed as the special representative of the South Korean committee for UNICEF.

Choi confirmed that he will volunteer for a UNICEF campaign in Vietnam from August 21 to 25, 2017, alongside fellow labelmate Jaemin of NCT Dream. The campaign is called "SMile for U," and it is a music education programme for children with disabilities that is run in collaboration with Choi's agency.
