American actress Chloe Grace Moretz was born on February 10, 1997. She has won numerous honours, including two Saturn Awards, two Young Artist Awards, two People's Choice Awards, and four MTV Movie & TV Awards.
Early roles in The Amityville Horror (2005), the drama series Desperate Housewives (2006–07), the supernatural horror movie The Eye (2008), the drama movie The Poker House (2008), the drama series Dirty Sexy Money (2007–08), the romantic comedy 500 Days of Summer (2009), and the kid-friendly comedy Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2010) mark the beginning of her career as an actor. Her big break came in 2010 with critically lauded roles in the horror thriller Let Me In and as a young vampire in the superhero movie Kick-Ass.
Moretz appeared as Carrie White in the supernatural horror thriller Carrie (2013) as well as Martin Scorsese's historical adventure movie Hugo (2011), Tim Burton's horror comedy Dark Shadows (2012), and the satire sitcom 30 Rock (2011–2013). She also repeated her role as Hit-Girl in Kick-Ass 2 (2013). In 2014, Moretz appeared in the critically acclaimed drama Clouds of Sils Maria, the teen love story If I Stay, and the vigilante action movie The Equaliser. She has had roles in the comedies Neighbours 2: Sorority Rising (2016) and The 5th Wave (2016) as well as the science fiction action movie Dark Places (2015).
In 2016, Moretz declared she was "re-assessing" the roles she was taking on and that she was pulling out of many projects, including the live-action version of The Little Mermaid from Universal Studios. The drama movie The Miseducation of Cameron Post (2018), the drama thriller Greta (2018) directed by Neil Jordan, the action horror movie Shadow in the Cloud (2020), and the science fiction movie Mother/Android (2021) all feature parts for Moretz. In The Addams Family (2019) and The Addams Family 2 (2021), she provided Wednesday Addams' voice. Moretz has performed on stage before, most notably in The Library (2014), which had its world premiere at The Public Theatre in New York City.
Early Years
Moretz was raised in Cartersville, Georgia, but was born in Atlanta, Georgia. Her father, Dr. McCoy "Mac" Moretz (1957-2021), was a plastic surgeon and the heir to the Moretz hosiery company, which was acquired in 2011 for $350 million. Her mother, Teri Duke, is a nurse practitioner. Brandon, Trevor, Colin, and Ethan are her four older brothers; Kathleen, an older sister, passed away soon after giving birth. She has stated that her family is Southern Baptist and "very Christian." She originally became interested in acting when her brother Trevor was admitted into the Professional Performing Arts School. As a result, she moved to New York City in 2002 with her mother and brother. Moretz would aid Trevor in line reading.
Career
2004–2015: responsibilities early on and breakthrough
In two episodes of the CBS television series The Guardian, Moretz played Violet; in Heart of the Beholder, she played Molly. She didn't receive further notoriety until her second major motion picture acting part in the 2005 adaptation of The Amityville Horror, for which she was nominated for a Young Artist Award. After Amityville, Moretz appeared in a number of TV guest spots and had a small part in Big Momma's House 2. Kiki George in Dirty Sexy Money and Sherri Maltby in Desperate Housewives are two of her frequent TV characters. In the animated film My Friends Tigger & Pooh, Moretz also provided the voice for Darby in the American version. In The Poker House, Moretz also had a supporting role as the abused youngster Cammie.
In the 2010 action movie Kick-Ass, directed by Matthew Vaughn and based on the Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. comic book series of the same name, Moretz played Hit-Girl. Prior to filming, Moretz trained for three months with Jackie Chan's stunt team and performed the majority of her own stunts while on location. Regarding her part in the violent movie, there was debate due to her youth. She was praised by the critics for her performance. Say what you will about her character, Chloe Grace Moretz has presence and appeal, according to Roger Ebert, who gave the movie only one star. She starred as 12-year-old vampire Abby in Let Me In (2010), a UK/US version of the Swedish film Let the Right One In, in the same year.
In the 2011 crime thriller Texas Killing Fields, Moretz portrayed Ann Sliger. She portrayed Isabelle in Martin Scorsese's Hugo, a 3D movie adaption of The Invention of Hugo Cabret that received eleven Oscar nominations in the same year. Hick, a film adaptation of Andrea Portes' book, starring Moretz. She portrayed Carolyn Stoddard, a disobedient teenage daughter, in the 2012 Tim Burton picture Dark Shadows, a reimagining of the popular soap opera.
In the follow-up Kick-Ass 2, she played Hit-Girl once more in 2013. In the same year, she starred as the title character in Kimberly Peirce's remake of the 1976 film Carrie and made a brief appearance in Movie 43.
For video games, Moretz has provided voice acting. In Kick-Ass: The Game, she portrayed Hit-Girl again, and in Dishonoured, she played young Lady Emily. Since she has such a happy family life, Moretz said in response to a question about why she favours playing darker, troubled characters in October 2012, that she finds it difficult to play characters who are vastly different. Moretz made her Off-Broadway debut in Steven Soderbergh's The Library from March 25 to April 27, 2014.
The lead character, Mia, was portrayed by Moretz in the 2014 film adaption of If I Stay by Gayle Forman. The plot is on a 17-year-old classical musician dealing with the fallout from a fatal car accident involving her family while also having an out-of-body experience. The movie received mixed reviews from critics, although a consensus emerged that Moretz gave the performance "her all," as seen by Rotten Tomatoes' 35% positive rating based on 122 reviews and average score of 5/10. Later, Moretz played Cassie Sullivan in the film adaptation of Rick Yancey's best-selling book The 5th Wave. The movie was made available in January 2016. The Sony Pictures employee Hannah Minghella noted that Moretz "embodies the heart, strength and determination that make Cassie such a compelling character."
2016 to the present: reevaluation and ongoing work
Along with Mike Birbiglia and Sheila Nevins, Moretz was selected to be one of the three judges for the Tribeca Film Festival's Narrative Short Film Competition in April 2016. She also acted in the sequel to Neighbours, Neighbours 2: Sorority Rising, alongside Zac Efron and Seth Rogen, and the drama Brain on Fire, which was based on Susannah Cahalan's memoir of the same name.
Moretz joined the cast of Shane Carruth's third film, The Modern Ocean, in November 2015. Asa Butterfield, Anne Hathaway, Daniel Radcliffe, and Keanu Reeves make up the ensemble group. Although she later left the project, Moretz was announced as the lead in Richard Curtis' live-action adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid, to be produced by Universal Studios.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter from 2016, Moretz said she has withdrawn from all of the unproduced film projects to which she had been associated. Since several of the other films she was supposed to be in were already in post-production, The Little Mermaid was the only one that had been officially announced and was impacted. "I want to reevaluate who I am and find myself within my roles again," she said. Now that I know how, I can go more slowly. She claimed that the workload brought on by appearing in multiple films each year "was causing her to lose sight of [the reason] she started acting and instead focus on [her films' box office receipts]." She declared that her primary concentration will be producing, namely two television projects. When asked about this in a subsequent interview, Moretz stressed that she was not taking a break from acting, adding: "I'm simply being pickier and more cautious about the jobs I'm picking. I believe that as an actor, you have a great chance to discover who you are via the roles you take on. I believe that right now in my life is the perfect time for me to discover who I am, what I stand for, what I want, and what this industry means to me. Why not take a step back, acknowledge that I am only 19 years old, and say, "Hey, let's make stuff that really, really hits hard with who I am and helps me figure out what it means to be a 19-year-old actor who is just doing her thing.'"
In the criminal drama November Criminals, which aired in 2017, Moretz once more partnered with Ansel Elgort. She appeared in the Louis C.K. comedy-drama I Love You, Daddy the same year, which had its global premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and earned unfavourable reviews there. After C.K. was accused of sexual misconduct, the media company The Orchard, which had acquired both domestic and international distributors for the movie, decided to cancel its release. After the affair, Moretz said, "Honestly, I believe it should just kind of fade away. Men accused of sexual misconduct: "I don't think it's time for them to have a voice right now," she said. Of course, it's heartbreaking to invest time in a project only to have it fall apart, but on the other hand, the [Me Too] movement is so strong and forward-thinking that I'm just happy to be in contact with everyone and to see the big change in the face of the industry, which I think is very, very real.
The Miseducation of Cameron Post, a drama about a teenage girl committed to a conversion camp, stars Moretz alongside Sasha Lane and Forrest Goodluck in 2018. Critics gave the movie favourable reviews and praised Moretz's performance. The Sundance Film Festival had its world premiere, and it took home the Grand Jury Prize there. FilmRise released the movie on August 3, 2018. She then made an appearance in the horror movie Suspiria, which had its global premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September 2018. It was directed by Luca Guadagnino and is a remake of the 1977 film of the same name. It earned conflicting reviews from critics and had a low box office performance. After that, she co-starred with Isabelle Huppert in the thriller Greta, which had its international premiere in September 2018 at the Toronto International Film Festival. Focus Features issued it on March 1st, 2019.
In the CGI animated movie The Addams Family in 2019, Moretz provided the voice of Wednesday Addams. The film garnered mixed reviews from critics. She made appearances in three films in 2021: Roseanne Liang's horror-thriller Shadow in the Cloud; Tim Story's live-action/animated comedy Tom & Jerry; and the sequel The Addams Family 2. She agreed to play a part in Mattson Tomlin's Mother/Android, his debut feature as a director, and she also made an appearance in the Amazon Prime Video series The Peripheral.
The six-part Coming Out Snapchat Original series, which highlights young LGBTQ people, was executive produced by Moretz in 2021. According to her in an interview with The Advocate, "I hope it is a show that will help to save lives by sharing what coming out means to each individual - that no single 'coming out' story is the same, each one is unique."
She will provide the voice for the title role in the 2023 Netflix release of the animated feature Nimona.
Fashion
For magazines like Flaunt, Vogue, Teen Vogue, Jalouse, Marie Claire, Interview, Elle, Love, Crash Magazine, InStyle, and many others, Moretz has taken part in photo shoots for editorials, features, and covers. She has also received invitations to other haute couture occasions, including the Dior Spring/Summer 2013 runway show during Paris Fashion Week. She was given the "Max Mara Face of the Future" award in 2012 thanks to Max Mara's endorsement. In 2012, Moretz also took on the role of spokesperson for American retailer Aéropostale, participating in a variety of videos, reports, and events. She received the "Next Future Icon Award" from Elle magazine in February 2013 at the London-based Elle Style Awards ceremony.
Moretz resides in Studio City, a neighbourhood of Los Angeles. Her brother Trevor has been her acting instructor since 2010, and he has also accompanied her on vacations and press appearances when her parents were unable to do so. Her brother Brandon manages her business.
Moretz revealed her relationship with English model and photographer Brooklyn Beckham in December 2014. She supported Hillary Clinton by going to the 2016 Democratic National Convention with Beckham. She announced their breakup in August 2018 after four years of intermittent dating.
She enjoys watching the New York Islanders play.
Activism
Moretz has endorsed LGBT equality in the open. Two of her brothers are homosexual, and according to Moretz, they first sought to "pray the gay away" in order to please their community. She has declined cinema parts that she deemed to be overtly sexualized and qualifies as a feminist. In the 2014 movie The Equaliser, she decided to play a teenage prostitute because the character "felt so real," as opposed to being a "plot device." Moretz was recognised by Time magazine as one of the 25 Most Influential Teens of the year in October 2014.
On the South Korean programme The Brainiacs/Problematic Men in 2016, Moretz expressed her support for Hillary Clinton, the Democratic Party's presidential nominee. Additionally, she spoke at the Democratic National Convention in July 2016 and praised Clinton while urging young people to cast ballots.
