Assandra Rae Steele, a Canadian actress and singer, was born on December 2, 1989. She is best known for her roles as Abby Vargas on The L.A. Complex and Manny Santos on Degrassi: The Next Generation. She portrayed Sarah in the 2014 MTV horror TV film The Dorm. In Rick and Morty on Adult Swim, she also provides the voices of Tammy Gueterman and Tricia Lange.

Early Life

Steele's early life and personal background include British and Filipina ancestry on her father's side. In the first grade, she started writing her own songs to accompany her poetry. Later, she started taking singing lessons. She received ballet and jazz dancing training at the London School of dancing in Scarborough, Ontario. She also competed in gymnastics for an unknown period of time.

In 2018, Steele wed American actor Trent Garrett.

Career

2001–2010: Early work and Degrassi: The Next Generation

Steele and Cristine Rotenberg made their debut in a Fib Finder commercial in 2001. Later that year, she made an appearance as Sydney Fox at the age of ten on an episode of Relic Hunter.

Steele has played the role of Manny Santos on Degrassi: The Next Generation as a regular cast member since she was eleven years old. Before leaving the show in 2010, she had played the part for nine years. Additionally, she starred in three Degrassi TV movies, including Degrassi Takes Manhattan, Degrassi Goes Hollywood, and Degrassi Spring Break Movie.

In addition to Full Court Miracle, My Babysitter's a Vampire, Super Sweet 16: The Movie, and My Babysitter's a Vampire, Steele had recurring appearances in The Best Years and Instant Star during the filming of Degrassi.

Steele has also started a career in music. How Much for Happy, her debut album, was published in 2005, and two Canadian tours followed. Destructo Doll, Steele's second album, was made available on July 21, 2009. For the music segment of Channel One News, she made an appearance to promote the album.

The L.A. Complex and additional developments, 2011–present

The L.A. Complex, which debuted on CTV and Much Music on January 10, 2012, and was regularly shown on Much Music, starred Steele as Abby Vargas in 2011. The series was officially picked up by The CW on the same day as the premiere and will start airing in the US in the spring. It was picked up for a second season, which premiered that summer on The CW and Much Music concurrently. On December 20, 2012, The L.A. Complex was declared officially canceled.

Steele published the extended play "Shifty" to iTunes on April 17, 2012. She published her single "Mad" to iTunes on April 1st, 2014. One day earlier, her VEVO page hosted the debut of the official lyric video.

In the Lifetime movie Sorority Surrogate, which debuted on March 22, 2014, she played Valerie Vont. Later that year, she would play Sarah in the movie The Dorm.

The album "Patterns" by Steele was made available on iTunes on August 12, 2014. The official video for "Games" debuted on her VEVO page on September 1 of the same year. Shortly after, Steele dropped the single "Power". On October 21, 2014, it was made available on iTunes.

With Glint member Jase Blankfort, Steele formed the band "psychocandy" in August 2019. You may listen to their song "Hunger" on SoundCloud. The group published a picture on a new Instagram account on January 1, 2020, with the message "2020."

In the Disney movie Raya and the Last Dragon, Steele was reportedly cast to play the title role. However, Steele was changed by Kelly Marie Tran on August 27, 2020.
