She gained notoriety for her leading roles as Ingrid Cortez in the Spy Kids trilogy (2001-2003), Rebecca Hutman in Night at the Museum (2006), Laurie Roberts in American Gangster (2007), Det. Karen Corelli in Righteous Kill (2008), Dr. Alex Friedman in Race to Witch Mountain (2009), Sally Jupiter in Watchmen (2009), Dr. Vera Gorski in Sucker Punch (2011), and Amanda Popper in Mr. Popper's Penguins (2012) after appearing in Tr.
Gugino also portrayed the title role in the criminal drama Karen Sisco (2003), science fiction Threshold (2005–2006), supernatural horror The Haunting of Hill House (2018), crime drama Jett (2019), and The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020) television series.
Early life
Carl Gugino, an orthodontist of Italian heritage, and his "Bohemian" English-Irish mother gave birth to Gugino in Sarasota, Florida. When her parents divorced when she was two, she spent time travelling between her mother's home in Paradise, California, where she had lived since she was four, and the Sarasota home of her father and half-brother Carl Jr.
She once remarked about her youth, "I lived in a motorhome in Big Sur and a tepee in Northern California. I spent the summers in Europe with my dad and stayed in a lovely home with a tennis court and a pool. I therefore feel as though I had two childhoods. She was a young fashion model who also studied acting at her aunt Carol Merrill's urging. Carol Merrill was a former Let's Make a Deal spokesperson. She gradually learned how to sustain herself, and with her parents' help, at the age of 16, she became legally independent.
Career
Gugino appeared in episodes of Good Morning, Miss Bliss, Saved by the Bell, Who's the Boss?, ALF, Doogie Howser, M.D., The Wonder Years, Webster, and had a recurrent role on Falcon Crest during the late 1980s and early 1990s. In films, Gugino starred alongside Pauly Shore in the love story Son in Law (1993) and Shelley Long's 1989 picture Troop Beverly Hills. The 1994 music video for Bon Jovi's song "Always" included her.
Gugino co-starred with Greg Wise and James Frain in the BBC miniseries The Buccaneers, an adaptation of Edith Wharton's final book, as Nan St. George (later the Duchess of Trevenick). She portrayed Ashley Schaeffer, the love interest of Michael J. Fox's character, in the first season of the 1996 comedy Spin City. She co-produced Judas Kiss and co-starred opposite Nicolas Cage in Brian De Palma's Snake Eyes. During the final season (1999–2000) of the television medical drama Chicago Hope, she played Dr. Gina Simon.
She starred in the 2001 film Spy Kids as the family matriarch Ingrid Cortez and its two follow-ups in 2002 and 2003. She starred in the martial arts action movie The One the same year as Jet Li's love interest.
In 2003, she starred in the Elmore Leonard crime thriller Karen Sisco on ABC, and in 2005, she was a cast member of the CBS science fiction series Threshold. In the feature film adaptation of Frank Miller's comic novel Sin City the same year, Gugino played Lucille. She had an appearance as Ben Stiller's love interest in the movie Night at the Museum the following year.
Gugino played the role of Peter Krause in the Roundabout Theatre Company production of After the Fall. She costarred with Blythe Danner in a late-2006 Off-Broadway production of Tennessee Williams' Suddenly Last Summer.
In 12 episodes of the cable TV show Entourage, Gugino played Amanda, Vincent Chase's agent. Gugino made an appearance in Allure's May 2007 issue. She made an appearances in American Gangster and the action-horror movie Rise: Blood Hunter in the same year. In the thriller Righteous Kill the next year, starring alongside Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, she portrayed the female protagonist.
Gugino played Abby in Eugene O'Neill's Desire Under the Elms at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, Illinois, from January 17 to February 17, 2009. Gugino's performance was acclaimed by Charles Isherwood of The New York Times, who said, "Ms. Gugino displays a depth and range of expression that I cannot imagine any other actress achieving with such blazing honesty and wrenching truth." She is amazing in every way. Three feature films starring Gugino made their debuts during the first three months of 2009: The Unborn, a thriller; Watchmen, in which she played Sally Jupiter; and Race to Witch Mountain, an adventure remake in which she costarred with Dwayne Johnson. She was nominated for an Outer Critics Circle Award in April of that year for her work in Desire Under the Elms as Outstanding Actress in a Play. Later, in November of that same year, she made a cameo appearance as a porn actress in the comedy film Women in Trouble, which resulted in a 2010 follow-up called Elektra Luxx.
Alongside Abbie Cornish and Emily Browning, Gugino played Madame Vera Gorsky in Zack Snyder's action-fantasy movie Sucker Punch in 2011. Gugino and co-star Oscar Isaac performed a duet for the film's music and closing credits. She also appeared as Abby Rhodes, Hank Moody's lawyer and love interest, in a guest role on Californication in its fourth season.
Gugino starred as Susan Berg, an investigative reporter based in Washington, D.C., in the USA Network miniseries Political Animals in the middle of 2012. She played opposite Dwayne Johnson once more in the lead role of the catastrophe movie San Andreas in 2015.
Private life
Gugino has been romantically involved with her associate Sebastián Gutiérrez since 1996. Marriage isn't essential to them, Gugino said in 2009, indicating that they had no intentions to get hitched. Being boyfriend and girlfriend is pleasant for us since it has a sensual undertone. We strongly believe that our desire to be together is the only thing keeping us here.
