An American actress and singer by the name of Camila Carraro Mendes was born on June 29, 1994. She made her acting debut as Veronica Lodge on the adolescent drama Riverdale, which is now airing on The CW. For her role, she was nominated for the 2017 adolescent Choice Award for Choice Scene Stealer. She played Morgan Cruise in the romantic comedy The New Romantic (2018), the critically acclaimed Hulu sci-fi comedy Palm Springs (2020), and the Netflix original comedies The Perfect Date (2019), Dangerous Lies (2020), and Do Revenge (2022).
Early Years
Brazilian parents gave birth to Mendes on June 29, 1994 in Charlottesville, Virginia. Her mother, Gisele Carraro, works as a flight attendant, while her father, Victor Mendes, is a business executive. Her sister is older. She first relocated to Orlando, Florida, shortly after her birth, before returning to Virginia. She relocated 16 times as a child but spent most of her time in Florida due to her father's job and afterwards her parents' divorce. She spent a year living in Brazil when she was ten years old. Mendes graduated in 2012 from the American Heritage School's Fine Arts department in Plantation, Florida. Mendes received his degree from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in May 2016.
Career
Mendes' first acting gig was in an IKEA ad. Mendes was cast as "silver-tongued high school sophomore" Veronica Lodge in Riverdale, a satirical adaptation of the Archie Comics, on The CW in 2016. The Carson Kolker Organization, which subsequently became CAA, was Mendes's agent. In December 2017 and February 2018, she was featured on the covers of Women's Health and Cosmopolitan, respectively.
The New Romantic, which had its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival in March 2018, marked Mendes' debut in a major motion picture as Morgan. Alongside Laura Marano and Matt Walsh, Mendes joined the cast of the romantic comedy The Perfect Date in the same month. On April 12, 2019, Netflix aired the movie. Mendes plays the lead in the 2019 movie Coyote Lake, which has its debut. She made an appearance in the highly regarded sci-fi/comedy Palm Springs in 2020, which had its world debut at the Sundance Film Festival and was made available on Hulu in July of the same year. She then starred in the thriller Dangerous Lies for Netflix, which was released in the same year.
Private life
She has received feedback along the lines of "You don't look Latina enough" when auditioning for roles with Latin American backgrounds. Mendes identifies as Latin American and is a Brazilian American. She is Portuguese-speaking.
Mendes claimed that she was "roofied and sexually assaulted" while attending NYU, which motivated her to acquire a tattoo signifying her resolve to create stability and safety for herself.
From 2013 through 2017, Mendes dated the photographer and director Ian Wallace. By October 2018, Mendes had started dating Charles Melton, a co-star on Riverdale; their relationship ended in December 2019.
