Byun Baek-hyun (born May 6, 1992), better known as Baekhyun, is a South Korean singer, songwriter, and actor. In 2011, Baekhyun began training with SM Entertainment. He made his debut as a member of the South Korean-Chinese boy group Exo, its sub-group Exo-K, and later formed a trio sub-unit with his bandmates Exo-CBX in 2016. Baekhyun took over as leader of the supergroup SuperM in 2019.

Following the release of several albums and extended plays with Exo, Baekhyun launched a solo career in 2019 with the release of his debut extended play, City Lights, which sold over 500,000 copies in 2019 and is South Korea's best-selling album by a solo artist of the 2010s. City Lights was followed by two million-selling EPs, Delight (2020), South Korea's first solo album to sell over one million copies in 19 years, and Bambi (2021). From 2019 to 2021, he was dubbed "Genius Idol" and won three consecutive Mnet Asian Music Awards for Best Male Artist.

Early years

Baekhyun was born in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, on May 6, 1992. He has a seven-year-old younger brother named Baek-beom. Baekhyun began singing lessons at the age of 11 after being inspired by South Korean singer Rain. He went to Jungwon High School in Bucheon, where he was the lead singer of Honsusangtae (lit. "coma"), a band that won a local music festival. Kim Hyun-woo, a member of the South Korean rock band DickPunks, taught him how to play the piano. In addition to music, Baekhyun was a martial artist in his youth, earning a dan 3 black belt in Hapkido.

An SM Entertainment agent spotted Baekhyun while he was studying for the entrance exams to the Seoul Institute of the Arts. He later joined SM Entertainment via the S.M. Casting System in 2011.

Debut and career beginnings in 2012-15

The main article is: Exo Baekhyun was officially revealed as Exo's ninth member and main vocalist on January 30, 2012. The group made its official debut in April 2012 and has since grown in popularity and commercial success.

Baekhyun and fellow Exo member Suho became regular hosts for the SBS music television show Inkigayo in February 2014. They left in November 2014 to concentrate on Exo's upcoming comeback. Baekhyun made his musical theatre debut in July 2014, playing the lead role of Don Lockwood in SM C&C's South Korean production of Singin' in the Rain.

Baekhyun's first solo song since his debut, "Beautiful," was released in April 2015 as the soundtrack for Exo's web-drama Exo Next Door. The song was the first soundtrack single from a web drama to reach the top of the digital charts. Baekhyun was cast in the action film Dokgo alongside actor Yeo Jin-goo in May 2015. However, the film's production was announced to be cancelled in January 2016. Baekhyun paid tribute to late South Korean singer Kim Hyun-sik in December 2015 by performing his song "Like Rain Like Music" at SBS' year-end music programme Gayo Daejeon. His rendition's studio recording was later made available digitally.

Baekhyun and Miss A member Suzy released a duet titled "Dream" in January 2016. The song quickly topped online real-time music charts and debuted at the top of Gaon's weekly digital chart. "Dream" also took first place on the music television shows Music Bank and Inkigayo five times in a row. Baekhyun won the YinYueTai V-Chart Award for Most Popular Singer in South Korea in April 2016. As part of SM Entertainment's music project SM Station, Baekhyun and South Korean singer K.Will released a folk-ballad duet titled "The Day" in May 2016.

Baekhyun made his small-screen debut in Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, a South Korean adaptation of the Chinese novel Bu Bu Jing Xin, in August 2016. At the 2016 SBS Drama Awards, he received a New Star Award for his performance in the drama. He also worked on an original soundtrack for the series titled "For You" with fellow Exo members Chen and Xiumin. Baekhyun joined Exo's first official subunit Exo-CBX in October 2016, along with Chen and Xiumin. Hey Mama!, their first extended play, was released on October 31. Baekhyun began participating in SM Entertainment's League of Legends tournament "2016 S.M. Super Celeb League" in November 2016, where he and labelmate Heechul competed against both professional players and fans from South Korea and China.

Baekhyun and Sistar member Soyou released a duet titled "Rain" in February 2017. The song topped every South Korean online music chart, a feat known as "all-kill," making him the first SM Entertainment artist to do so in both 2016 and 2017 with "Dream" and "Rain," respectively. For the second season of the Station project, Baekhyun released a single titled "Take You Home" in April 2017. On Gaon's weekly digital chart, the song peaked at number twelve.

On February 5, 2018, Baekhyun sang the South Korean national anthem at the opening ceremony of the 132nd International Olympic Committee (IOC) session in front of South Korean President Moon Jae-in and the president of the Organizing Committee for the 2018 Winter Olympics, Lee Hee-beom. In August 2018, Baekhyun and rapper Loco collaborated on a song called "Young" for the Station project. On the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart, the song peaked at number four.

2019–present: Solo appearance, SuperM, and enlistment

Baekhyun made his solo debut as the third member of Exo, releasing the EP City Lights in July 2019. In 2019, the EP sold over 550,000 copies, breaking the record for the best-selling solo album in the history of South Korea's Gaon Music Chart. It topped the Gaon weekly and monthly charts, was sixth on the year-end chart, and was first among solo artist albums. It eventually became South Korea's best-selling solo album in the 2010s. Baekhyun was confirmed as a member of SuperM, a "K-pop supergroup" formed by SM Entertainment in collaboration with Capitol Records and aimed at the American market, in August. SuperM made his debut in October with a self-titled EP and began promoting it. Following the success of his debut EP City Lights and its lead single "UN Village," Baekhyun was named Best Male Artist at the 2019 Mnet Asian Music Awards in December.

Baekhyun released two soundtrack singles, "My Love" and "On the Road," for the television series Dr. Romantic 2 and Hyena, respectively, in early 2020. Baekhyun collaborated with Bolbbalgan4 in May, appearing on her single "Leo." On Gaon's weekly digital chart, the song peaked at number two. The following month, Baekhyun released his second EP Delight, which included the lead single "Candy." The EP received more than 732,000 pre-orders, making it the most pre-ordered solo album in South Korean history. Delight had sold over one million copies by July, making it the first solo album in South Korea to do so since Kim Gun-Another mo's Days (2001). In July, Baekhyun released a remake of BoA's track "Garden in the Air" from her album Girls on Top (2005) as the first release from a project commemorating BoA's 20th debut anniversary on SM Station. Later that year, he released two more soundtrack singles, "Every Second" for Do You Like Brahms? and "Happy" for Record of Youth. Baekhyun won the Mnet Asian Music Award for Best Male Artist for the second year in a row on December 6. Later that month, he released a digital single called "Amusement Park."

Baekhyun held his first solo concert, Baekhyun: Light, on January 3, 2021, in a digital format because in-person concerts were not possible due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. The concert, which was broadcast on Beyond Live, drew 110,000 viewers from 120 countries. He followed that up with "Get You Alone," the lead single from his self-titled debut Japanese EP, which was released on January 21. The Japanese Recording Industry Association certified the EP as Gold. Baekhyun's third Korean-language EP (fourth overall) Bambi and its lead single of the same name were released on March 30, his final release before enlisting for South Korea's mandatory military service. With over 833,000 copies pre-ordered, the album surpassed Delight as the most pre-ordered album by a solo artist in South Korea. It debuted at the top of the Gaon Album Chart and is Baekyun's second Korean-language album to sell over one million copies. He won his third consecutive Mnet Asian Music Award for Best Male Artist in December.

Voice

One of the highlights of Baekhyun's discography has been his tenor voice, which has been described as "soaring" by Refinery29 and "standout" by Billboard.

Fashion and advertising

Baekhyun collaborated with Montblanc for the brand's digital watch in May 2017, and the advertisement video was released on social media. In May 2018, Vogue magazine revealed that Baekhyun had collaborated with Privé and would be launching his own unisex street-wear brand, "Privé by BBH," on July 1. Baekhyun is now the brand's co-creative director. In an interview with Forbes, Baekhyun stated that he wants his clothing to "encourage people to embody being fearless."

Baekhyun was named Burberry's brand ambassador in September 2020. He was featured on the cover of Harper's Bazaar Korea's October issue, making him the first K-Pop male artist to have his own cover. Beauty brand TirTir and health food brand Life Pharm have both named Baekhyun as brand ambassadors.

Private life

Baekhyun attended Kyung Hee Cyber University and took online classes for the Culture and Arts Department of Business Administration, alongside fellow Exo members Chanyeol and Suho.

Baekhyun enlisted in South Korea's mandatory military service on May 6, 2021. He was discharged on February 5, 2023, after being diagnosed with hypothyroidism and serving as a public service worker rather than an active-duty soldier. The next day, he held a live YouTube broadcast to greet his fans.
