Canadian actress Anne Frances Murphy was born on December 19, 1986. She is most recognized for her leading performances as Allison McRoberts in the AMC dark comedy series Kevin Can F**k Himself (2021–2022) and Alexis Rose in the CBC sitcom Schitt's Creek (2015–2020). She received praise for her portrayal in the previous series, earning nominations for four Canadian Screen Awards, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, two Critics' Choice Television Awards, and a Golden Globe Award, as well as winning a Primetime Emmy Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
Murphy was born on December 19, 1986, in Ottawa, Ontario. Her parents were both educators. She participated in theatre performances while attending Elmwood School in Ottawa for her high school education.
Murphy attended Queen's University for a year before moving to Concordia University, where he earned a degree in theater performance. At the Actors' Conservatory at the Canadian Film Centre, she later received training.
At the age of 22, she relocated to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting.
Career
In the 2007 criminal thriller television movie Lethal Obsession, Murphy made her acting debut. In numerous subsequent Canadian movies, including Story of Jen (2008), Lick (2010), and A Windigo Tale (2010), she continues to play modest and supporting parts. She additionally made appearances in a number of Canadian television shows, such as Rookie Blue (2012) and Good God (2012). She has said that at the time she was a "struggling actress" who "was begging to go in for comedies" but who had only experience in drama.
Additionally, she made appearances in a number of American television series, such as Beauty & the Beast (2012), Blue Mountain State (2010), Against the Wall (2011), and The Beautiful Life: TBL (2009).
When Murphy went on the CBC sitcom Schitt's Creek's Schitt's Creek in 2013, she was considering giving up acting as a vocation. "My house had just burned down, I had about $3 in my bank account, and I hadn't worked in nearly two years," she recounted in 2020. And I had just failed my very first screen exam, like, three times in a row. The cosmos told me to stop crying in the Pacific Ocean after I did a particularly snotty cry. You should not use this! But then, two days later, I received the Schitt's Creek audition call. She performed the role throughout the whole six-season duration of the show, which lasted from January 2015 to April 2020.
Murphy spent six years in Montreal before relocating to Toronto, where she co-created and starred in the 2015 online comedy The Plateaus, which was about four obnoxious musicians. She was nominated for Best Performance in a Program or Series Produced for Digital Media at the 2016 Canadian Screen Awards for her work on the show. For her work in Schitt's Creek, Murphy received a nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy Series at the same ceremony. In 2018, 2019, and 2020, she received the same nomination for this performance. She was nominated for Outstanding Ensemble in a Comedy Series at the 2019 Screen Actors Guild Awards, Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series at the 2019 Critics' Choice Television Awards, and Best Actress in a Breakthrough Role at the 2019 Gracie Awards, the latter of which she won. For her work in Schitt's Creek's last season, she took home the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in September 2020.
She was chosen to play the main character in the dark comedy Kevin Can F**k Himself on AMC in February 2020. The COVID-19 epidemic caused a production delay of several months, but it started up again in September 2020.
Murphy and Schitt's Creek co-star Catherine O'Hara starred in a holiday ad campaign for Hudson's Bay department shops in 2020. She also starred in a number of commercials for the meal-kit provider HelloFresh, including the web series Hungry Hearts, which had a soap opera-like aesthetic. She made an appearance in a Nintendo Switch advertisement in January 2021, sharing a scene with her mother. She participated in an advertisement in September 2021 for the Phexxi hormone-free contraception, which had received FDA approval.
She played a young Ruth in the Netflix series Russian Doll in the year 2022.
Advocacy and activism
Murphy represents Care Canada, a global humanitarian organization. She traveled to Jordan in 2019 to learn about Care's initiatives to support the region's women and girls. In January 2021, she gave the Encampment Support Network, a charity that aids Toronto's homeless, the money she received from the auction of her first red carpet gown.
Private life
In August 2011, Murphy wed lead singer of the bands Hollerado and Anyway Gang, Menno Versteeg, a singer and musician. The two were unharmed but lost most of their possessions when their house caught fire in 2013.
James Stewart's "heartbreaking, sweet, and funny" performance in Harvey is one of Murphy's influences; she has a tattoo of his silhouette on her wrist.
