Annabelle Wallis is an English actress who was born on September 5, 1984. She is best known for her roles as Jane Seymour in Showtime's period drama The Tudors (2009-2010), Grace Burgess in BBC drama Peaky Blinders (2013-2022), Mia Form in supernatural horror film Annabelle (2014), Jenny Halsey in supernatural adventure film The Mummy (2017), Sandra in Silent Night (2021), and Madison Mitchell in horror film Malignant (2021).
Wallis was born in Oxford on September 5, 1984. Richard Harris, an Irish actor, was her maternal great-uncle. Her first cousins once removed in England include actors Jared Harris, Jamie Harris, and director Damian Harris. She is a descendant of English singer Marie Lloyd on her father's side. Francis, her older brother, is a director who has worked with fashion designer Michael Kors as well as singers Pixie Lott and Birdy.
She grew up in the Portuguese town of Cascais, where her family moved when she was 18 months old. She is fluent in English, Portuguese, French, and Spanish as a result of attending international schools.
2005-2012: Beginnings of a career
Wallis appeared in several short films in Portugal before moving to London to pursue a career in film. She did some advertisements and looked into drama schools in London before deciding to find an agent.
In 2005, she was cast as the lead in the Bollywood film Dil Jo Bhi Kahey.. (or "Whatever the Heart Says"). The film did poorly at the box office. She appeared in True True Lie (2006) alongside Jaime King and Body of Lies (2008) as Mark Strong's girlfriend. Steel Trap, a B-movie in which she starred (2008).
Her breakthrough role on television came in season three of the Showtime drama series The Tudors (2009) as Jane Seymour. She took over for actress Anita Briem. In the years since, she has appeared in the television film The Lost Future (2010) alongside Sam Claflin, as well as the ABC series Pan Am (2011). Due to a drop in viewership, the show was cancelled after one season.
Madonna directed her in W.E. : Wallis & Edouard in 2011, and she had a small role in X-Men: First Class. She was uncredited in Jared Leto's documentary Artifact and Snow White and the Huntsman in 2012.
Peaky Blinders and blockbusters from 2013 to 2017
From 2013 to 2016, Wallis played Grace Burgess in the BBC drama Peaky Blinders. Her role gave her the opportunity to be "believable in a strong, female, alpha role." The series received both critical and popular acclaim.
She joined The Conjuring Universe in 2014 as a lead in the horror film Annabelle, directed by John R. Leonetti and produced by James Wan. The film was a box office success, but it received mixed reviews. In 2018, Wallis was cast as Rebecca Crosby in the American comedy Tag. Later that year, Wallis reteamed with film director Alex Kurtzman for the Star Trek: Short Treks episode "Calypso," in which she voiced Zora, an artificial intelligence. She would later reprise this role on Star Trek: Discovery in a recurring capacity.
She was named Cartier's ambassador for jewellery and the new face of the Panthère de Cartier watch in April 2018.
Wallis appeared in Showtime's miniseries The Loudest Voice in 2019. She portrays Laurie Luhn, Head of Booking at Fox News Channel and Roger Ailes's long-time "mistress". Luhn, along with Gretchen Carlson, was one of Ailes's first victims to speak out and condemn him. The series received generally positive reviews and was nominated for Best Limited Series or Television Film at the Golden Globes. Wallis's performance was praised and seen as a "heartbreakingly powerful work" according to the Chicago Sun Times.
Later that year, Wallis returned to Peaky Blinders for the fifth season as Grace Shelby.
She appeared in Robin Pront's thriller The Silencing in 2020. The film was scheduled to premiere at the South by Southwest festival in March 2020, but it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was eventually released on DirecTV on July 16, 2020.
Wallis also appeared as Princess Buttercup in The Princess Bride for Quibi to raise funds for World Central Kitchen in the same year, and she joined the cast of Floria Sigismondi's third film, The Silence of Mercy. The filming was completed in March 2021.
Wallis appeared in James Wan's horror film Malignant in 2021. Warner Bros. had planned to release the film in August 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it will now be released on September 10, 2021, simultaneously in theatres and on HBO Max. The film is an homage to the giallo genre and follows Madison Mitchell, played by Wallis, who is "paralysed by shocking visions of grisly murders" and "discovers that these waking dreams are in fact terrifying realities" as her torment continues. It is the first R-rated film from the United States to be released in China.
This year, Wallis appeared in Joe Carnahan's science fiction action film Boss Level, starring Frank Grillo and Mel Gibson, as well as Agata Alexander's science fiction thriller Warning, starring Alice Eve and Alex Pettyfer.
Camille Griffin's Christmas comedy Silent Night premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2021. Wallis co-stars in the film with Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, and Roman Griffin Davis.
Philanthropy and activism
Wallis identifies as a feminist. She read a letter from suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst at the Letters Live event curated by Net-à-Porter in Los Angeles in February 2018. The proceeds were donated to Women for Women International.
Wallis spoke out against Brexit and took part in the #DontFuckMyFuture campaign in June 2018 to encourage young people to vote no.
Wallis is a supporter of Save The Children and took part in the #ChristmasJumper campaign in November 2018. She joined UNICEF's U.n.I (You and I) project in September 2019. She is dedicated to the NGO Choose Love (formerly Help Refugees), which provides humanitarian aid to refugees worldwide and advocates on their behalf. In December 2019, she attended the opening of the Choose Love store in Los Angeles.
During the COVID-19 pandemic in April 2020, Wallis collaborated with her friend and fashion designer Georgia Hardinge to raise funds for the charity Age UK. She, along with other celebrities, joined the #SaveWithStories movement in collaboration with Save The Children and No Kid Hungry. The movement's goal is to provide entertainment and education to children and parents who are trapped at home during the pandemic. From August 2015 to August 2017, Wallis was in an on-again, off-again relationship with British singer Chris Martin. She sang lead vocals on the song "Up&Up," the final track on Martin's band Coldplay's album A Head Full of Dreams.
