Kimberly Alexis Bledel, an American actress and model, was born on September 16, 1981. She is most known for playing Emily Malek in The Handmaid's Tale (2017–2021) and Rory Gilmore on the television series Gilmore Girls (2000–2007). Additionally, in 2012, Bledel played a recurring part on Mad Men. In the Netflix reunion miniseries Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life (2016), Bledel played Rory Gilmore once more.
In the Disney live-action adaption of Tuck Everlasting (2002), Bledel made her feature film debut as Winnie Foster. She later made appearances in Sin City (2005), Post Grad (2009), and the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movie trilogy as Lena Kaligaris.
For her work, Bledel has been recognized with numerous honors and nominations. She was nominated for Satellite, Teen Choice, and Young Artist Awards for her work in Gilmore Girls. She was nominated for four Primetime Emmy Awards for her work in The Handmaid's Tale, and she won the award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series. Three Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for Outstanding Ensemble Cast in a Drama Series have also been given to her.
On September 16, 1981, Bledel was born in Houston, Texas, to Martn Bledel and Nanette (née Dozier), a flight attendant and gift processor.Eric is her younger brother. Her dad is from Argentina. When Nanette was eight years old, her family returned to Mexico from Phoenix, Arizona, where she was born. Enrique Einar Bledel Huus, her paternal grandpa, was of German and Danish ancestry and was vice president of Coca-Cola Latin America and the Coca-Cola Inter-American Corporation. Enrique was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Jean (née Campbell), who was born in New York and had Scottish, Irish, and English ancestry, was Bledel's paternal grandmother. "It's the only culture my mom knows from life, and my father as well," Bledel has said of her parents' upbringing in Latin America. "They made the decision to raise their children within the context they had been raised in." Bledel describes herself as Latina and is occasionally referred to as such. She was raised in a Spanish-speaking home and did not learn English until she started school.
Bledel attended Baptist and Lutheran schools until earning his diploma in 1999 from Houston's Catholic St. Agnes Academy. To get over her nervousness, her mother suggested she attend community theater. Bledel performed in youth-oriented versions of Our Town and The Wizard of Oz. She was hired as a fashion model after being discovered at a nearby mall.
Career
2000–2008: Stardom debut and ascent
The WB comedy-drama Gilmore Girls, which aired for seven seasons from October 5, 2000, to May 15, 2007, starred Bledel opposite Lauren Graham. She portrayed Rory Gilmore, a character who was the only child of Lorelai Gilmore (Graham). Rory first attended a prestigious private high school while residing with her mother in a small Connecticut town. She eventually transferred to Yale University for college, where she served as the editor of the Yale Daily News among other things. In the fantasy romance drama Tuck Everlasting (2002), based on Natalie Babbitt's 1975 novel of the same name, Bledel makes her feature film debut alongside Jonathan Jackson. Bledel first appeared in that movie as an uncredited extra in Rushmore, a comedy-drama from 1998. Alongside Amber Tamblyn, America Ferrera, and Blake Lively, she co-starred in the 2005 drama The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, which was adapted from the same-titled novel by Ann Brashares. She portrayed Lena Kaligaris, a young artist who traveled with her three closest friends throughout the summer thanks to a pair of "magical" trousers.
In the 2005 anthology neo-noir criminal thriller Sin City, Bledel co-starred as the prostitute Becky. She is an extremely skilled prostitute. In her role, she carries a gun and kicks ass, according to Bledel. In the 2006 romantic comedy I'm Reed Fish, Bledel played the fiancée of Baruchel's lead character alongside Jay Baruchel. She played Lena Kaligaris again in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, which was released in August 2008, after Gilmore Girls ended. Bledel appeared in the August 21, 2009, release of the comedy Post Grad the year after.
2009–present: continued acclaim
In the April 26, 2009 Tribeca Film Festival premiere of the romantic comedy The Good Guy, Bledel co-starred with Scott Porter and Bryan Greenberg. The main character of the movie was Wall Street investment broker Tommy (Porter), whose life unravels when he helps Greenberg's new broker Daniel. Tommy's girlfriend Beth was portrayed by Bledel. In the two-hour series finale titled "And in the End..." in April 2009, Bledel appeared as Dr. Julia Wise, a new intern to the hospital, in the NBC medical drama ER. Bledel signed a deal with IMG's modeling division in May 2009.
In the Robert Redford-directed historical drama The Conspirator, Bledel co-starred with James McAvoy and Robin Wright. She portrayed Mary Surratt, the first American woman to be hung by the federal government, who was defended by Wright's character Mary Surratt and McAvoy's Frederick Aiken, a lawyer. The movie had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, and on April 15, 2011, it was made available in America. Bledel played the lead in the Canadian drama The Kate Logan Affair, which was also released in 2010. The movie was shown at the 2010 Festival du Nouveau Cinéma in Montreal.
At the New York City Center, Bledel appeared in the Manhattan Theatre Club production of Regrets. Early in March 2013, it was announced that Jason Ritter and Bledel will co-star in the Fox pilot Friends & Family, a remake of the British sitcom Gavin & Stacey in which Ritter plays Gavin and Bledel plays Stacey. Us & Them is the new title of the pilot, which was picked up for a series. The sitcom was eventually broadcast on Sony Crackle in the fall of 2018 when Fox ultimately chose against airing it. In the 2015 movie Jenny's Wedding, Bledel co-starred with Katherine Heigl as the character's fiancée.
In a series of four 90-minute films based on the four seasons, Netflix announced a resurrection of Gilmore Girls on January 29, 2016, and it was revealed that Bledel would be a part of it. She debuted on Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale in 2017 as Ofglen, who later went by the name Emily Malek. For the second season, her character was elevated to a regular one. Bledel's critically lauded portrayal garnered her her first Emmy Award nomination and victory in the Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series category at the 2017 Creative Arts Awards. After the fourth season, she left.
Public Perception
Numerous fashion publications, including Teen Vogue, Glamour, CosmoGirl, Vanity Fair, Lucky, Elle Girl, Parade, Nylon, and Seventeen, have featured Bledel on their covers. She was featured in print commercials for Naturistics lip gloss and Bonne Bell lip balm in 2000.
She has appeared on lists of the most beautiful women in the world published by magazines. She was listed as one of the "25 Hottest Stars Under 25" by Teen People in 2002. Personal Life
From December 2002 to June 2006, Bledel dated Milo Ventimiglia, a fellow former Gilmore Girls co-star.
While appearing as a guest star on Mad Men in 2012, Bledel started dating Vincent Kartheiser, whose character Pete Campbell appeared in scenes with her character Beth Dawes. In March 2013, the pair made the announcement of their engagement. In June 2014, they were wed in California. In the fall of 2015, Bledel gave birth to their son, the couple's first child. Kartheiser and Bledel divorced on August 10, 2022, and it became official on August 26.
In 2012, Bledel encouraged her followers to vote and backed Barack Obama's re-election.
