Alexandra American singer-songwriter Ruth Shipp gained notoriety for her roles as Kimberly Woodruff in the Oscar-nominated film Straight Outta Compton (2015) and singer Aaliyah in the Lifetime television movie Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B (2014).

For her roles as Storm in the X-Men series, beginning with X-Men: Apocalypse, Abby Suso in the 2018 comedy Love, Simon, and Susan Wilson in the musical drama tick, tick... BOOM!, Shipp is most recognized.

Early Life

Arizona's Phoenix is where Shipp was born. Her father is a musician, while her mother teaches Kundalini yoga. Her mother is white, while her father is black. James and Jordan are her two brothers, while Kasia is her stepsister. Squaw Peak Elementary School, Arizona School for the Arts, and St. Mary's Catholic High School in Phoenix are where Shipp received his education. At the age of 17, she relocated to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting.

Career

With a little part in Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel in 2009, Shipp made her acting debut. She later appeared as KT Rush in the third season of Nickelodeon's mystery teen drama series House of Anubis.

In 2014, Shipp attracted recognition for her performances as Aaliyah Haughton in the Lifetime television movie Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B and as Dani Raymond in the VH1 television movie sequel Drumline: A New Beat. Shipp sung on the second performance. She then played Kimberly Woodruff, Ice Cube's wife, in the biographical movie Straight Outta Compton, which followed the lives of the members of the hip-hop group N.W.A. She appeared with Halle Berry as the weather-controlling mutant Ororo Munroe/Storm in Bryan Singer's 2016 superhero movie X-Men: Apocalypse. She appeared in two high school comedies in 2018: Love, Simon with Nick Robinson and Jorge Lendeborg Jr.; and Dude with Kathryn Prescott and Lucy Hale.

In addition to reprising her part as Ororo Munroe/Storm in the 2019 movie Dark Phoenix, she also played Sasha Arias in the Shaft sequel that same summer. She played Susan in the 2021 adaption of tick, tick... BOOM! that was made into a movie.

Barbie, starring Greta Gerwig, will feature Shipp. Release day is set for July 21, 2023.

Personal life In June 2021, Shipp publicly identified herself as a part of the LGBT community, albeit she did not give a label.
