Alexandra Elizabeth Roach (born 20 August 1987) is a Welsh actress best known for her roles in Utopia as Becky and No Offence as DS Joy Freers. She has also appeared in shows such as Being Human, Inside No. 9, Black Mirror, and Killing Eve.
Life and work
Roach was born in the Welsh town of Ammanford, Carmarthenshire. Several of her relatives, including her father Jeff (who went on to work for the Welsh Rugby Union), her brother, and her sister, have previously served in the police force. In her early teens, Roach appeared in the long-running television soap Pobol Y Cwm and won Best Juvenile Actor in a Soap at the Children in Entertainment Awards. After leaving the show in 2005, she worked with the National Youth Theatre of Wales before enrolling at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where she earned a B.A. in acting in 2010.
She has spoken about how her Welsh accent hurt her chances in an early audition for a television role. "This old guy was the director, and he was so well spoken, and he asked me where I was from, and I told him: 'Wales, Swansea,' and he just blanked me and turned to the casting director and said, 'oh no, she's not right'"... So I told him, 'I'm not going to do it in this voice; I'm going to do it with an English accent,' and he said, 'no, honestly, there's no point'. He just wouldn't look at me or listen to me."
Roach appeared in Rex Obano's The Door Never Closes at the Almeida Theatre in May 2010. Following that, she played Sasha in Being Human, Beth Partridge in Candy Cabs, and Mr Whicher in The Suspicions of Mr Whicher (in which she played notorious child murderer Constance Kent).
In The Iron Lady, Roach played a young Margaret Thatcher. In the autumn of 2012, she appeared as Helene in Sky Comedy's Hunderby, and she was cast as Molly in the film adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's 2003 novel Private Peaceful. In 2011, she was named to Screen International's "Stars of Tomorrow" list. She appeared in the British television series Utopia in 2013.
On June 3, 2013, Roach appeared as Ash's vegan girlfriend Chloe in the fifth episode of the ITV comedy Vicious. In June 2015, she returned to the role for one episode. She debuted as a Welsh-speaking detective in the first episode of the BBC One TV comedy drama film Walter on August 8, 2014. She played DS Joy Freers in the TV series No Offense in 2015.
She got engaged to club promoter Jack Scales in 2016, and they later married.
Roach appeared as a presenter at the 2017 BAFTA Cymru Awards.
