Adah Sharma (born 11 May 1992) is an Indian actress who works primarily in Hindi and Telugu films. After completing her education, Sharma made her acting debut in the 2008 Hindi language horror thriller 1920, which was a box office triumph. Her performance as a possessed lady in the film was critically acclaimed, and she was nominated for a Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. She stepped into the South Indian film industries after the release of her romantic comedy flick Hasee Toh Phasee (2014), making films in Telugu.
Childhood and education
Adah Sharma was born in Mumbai, India, to a Tamil Brahmin family from Tamil Nadu. Her father, S. L. Sharma, was a merchant navy captain, and her mother is a classical dancer. She realised she wanted to be an actress when she was in ninth school. She wanted to drop out of school, but her parents encouraged that she finish her education. She quit studying after finishing her twelfth grade.
Sharma is an athlete. She has been dancing since she was three years old and graduated from the Natraj Gopi Krishna Kathak Dance Academy in Mumbai. She studied salsa for four months in the United States, in addition to jazz and ballet, and claims to be "very good" in belly dancing.
Career Attempting to break into the film industry, Sharma auditioned for various roles but was turned down, either because of her curly hair or because the casting directors thought she was too young. She eventually earned the lead female part in Vikram Bhatt's 2009 Hindi horror thriller 1920, opposite Rajneesh Duggal. Critics uniformly applauded her portrayal of a possessed lady. Nikhat Kazmi of The Times of India said she "delivers a consummate performance," calling it "excellent," "[exceptionally] brilliant," and "incredibly convincing." The film was a commercial triumph, becoming Bhatt's first box office hit in six years and ten films, and earned Sharma a nomination for Best Female Debut at the 54th Filmfare Awards. Three years later, she released Phhir, another horror film in which she collaborated with writer Vikram Bhatt and her 1920 co-star Rajneesh Duggal. Phhir, on the other hand, did not fare as well as 1920, debuting to bad reviews and failing at the box office, with Sharma receiving mixed reviews for her portrayal. While Sujata Chakrabarti remarked that she "doesn't exude the intensity of being a psychic for even a minute," Sify's Sonia Chopra stated that she was "the only one in the film who can act." Her third film, the romantic comedy Hum Hai Raahi Car Ke, was a critical and financial failure two years later. Sharma had two films released in 2014: Puri Jagannadh's romance Heart Attack opposite Nithiin, which marked her Telugu debut, and a Hindi film Hasee Toh Phasee, which starred Sidharth Malhotra and Parineeti Chopra and featured her in a supporting part. She described her character in the former as "vulnerable, yet extremely sexy," and she worked on her Telugu diction for two months. Sharma garnered excellent feedback for her portrayal in Heart Attack, with The Times of India stating that she "looks like a natural actress and does a decent job," and 123telugu.com calling it a "stunning debut." Both films were commercially successful, with Hasee To Phasee becoming one of the year's highest-grossing Hindi films.
Her next two films, the Telugu family drama S/O Satyamurthy, directed by Trivikram Srinivas and starring Allu Arjun and Samantha Ruth Prabhu, and the action thriller Rana Vikrama, starring Puneeth Rajkumar and Anjali, her first Kannada project, were released on consecutive days in April 2015. Both films were commercial triumphs, with the former earning over 80 crore and becoming one of the highest-grossing Telugu films of all time, despite receiving mixed reviews from critics. In Subramanyam for Sale, a Telugu romantic comedy, she was cast alongside Sai Dharam Tej. The film, directed by Harish Shankar, was a moderate hit, and Sharma garnered positive feedback for her portrayal. Sharma shone in a stunning lehenga as she walked the runway for Shravan Kumar at the 5th edition of the Indian Federation for Fashion Development's India Runway Week. The designer kept the collection regional in nature, highlighting lesser-known handlooms from the south.
In February 2016, Sharma had three releases, two of which were in Telugu. Madan directed her first film, the romantic comedy Garam, in which she played the love interest of Aadi's role. Her next film was the critically acclaimed thriller Kshanam, in which she played Swetha, who seeks help from her ex-boyfriend (Adivi Sesh). Her final release of the year was the romantic comedy Idhu Namma Aalu, her first Tamil film, in which she played a minor role and also performed an item number on the song "King Kong," which topped the South Indian charts, and her dance moves, as well as her combination with Silambarasan, were praised. Her next film was the thriller Commando 2, a sequel to the 2013 film Commando: A One Man Army, in which she plays an inspector alongside Vidyut Jammwal. The picture was a mediocre commercial success. In 2020, she portrayed a transgender woman in the MX PLAYER webseries Pati patni aur panga.
